Initial Post Instructions
Analyze why older, white adults vote in elections more than other groups while describing how each political party cultivates voters and the role an interest group plays in turning people out to the polls.

You can explore political voting data at the United States Census Bureau’s website here: https://www.census.gov/topics/public-sector/voting.html (Links to an external site.)

Use evidence (cite sources) to support your response from assigned readings or online lessons, and at least one outside scholarly source.

Professor’s post: Class,

This reality that more older white folks vote than other groups is reflected in this ad that aired in the run up to the 2018 midterm elections:

This ad clearly links this reality to the strength of the Republican party, and specifically Trump’s victory in 2016. Is there a link here?  Do these folks tend to vote Republican, and if so how come?  Did that change at all in 2018, and if so how come? Some pertninent topics from your text may include demagoguery (Magstadt, 372) and political socialization (Magstadt, 299).

POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION

Political socialization is a function of a number of elements.  We each get many of our views on life from our upbringing. This can vary depending on the type of home we have experienced as well as the neighborhood we have lived in. Forming our political idea is no different. In today’s political climate there is a good amount of polarization. I have instituted a request when my extended family gets together that the discussion of TODAY’S political climate is off limits.

Quantitative studies have determined that most political socialization occurs during childhood.  What do Course members think of this idea?

Homeland security

select will be used for your Midterm, Progress, and Final paper.

For this midterm, complete an in-depth profile on the organization selected for your project.  In 5-7 pages (double-spaced) provide a narrative explaining the organization’s origins, ideology, goals & objectives.  Include a discussion on the leadership, funding, and capabilities such as physical bases or operating/support location(s), personnel strengths, training programs, and communications methods.  Lastly, it would be helpful to provide a description of known and suspected weapons/lethal agents and delivery methods, procedures used in prior attacks, propaganda, surveillance methods, and significant events/dates that may be used in attack planning. Use section headings in your paper.

Note on the three paper assignment series:  The first paper (the midterm) is about the group you select and basically provides a historical perspective about the group. The second paper (the progress assignment) is a red cell where you put yourself in the shoes of the terrorist group by thinking like they would to determine how the U.S. can do intelligence collection on the terrorist group.

For the final assignment, you will combine all that you wrote in the first two papers into one seamless document and you will add at least three recommendations you would provide to a Homeland Security policy maker on how to counter your selected organization. Be sure to improve your writing based on feedback you receive from the midterm and progress assignment.

Make sure you read the instructions carefully and that you focus your paper on answering the assigned questions. This assignment is a research paper, not an opinion paper, so you need to use the class readings to support your thesis.  Make sure you use APA style in-text parenthetical citations at the end of every sentence where you are quoting or paraphrasing another’s ideas (or any information) that is not your own thoughts and words, like this (Bergen, 2015, para 14). I highly recommend you use the APUS writing guide based on the APA style which can be found in the university library or at this link: APUS Style Guide for APA. You are welcome to use supplementary sources to compliment the assigned readings based upon your research, but make sure you use scholarly and credible sources. See the APUS Library Homeland Security Program Guide for good sources, as well as the APUS Research Primer and the APUS Library Research FAQs. For formatting, the best option is to use the attached example paper as a template (for formatting purposes only).

Requirements:

  • Five-seven (5-7) pages of text, not including the Title or Reference pages
  • Written according to the APA style and format
  • Use Times New Roman 12 point font
  • 1 inch margins on all sides
  • Double space all text (no extra lines or spaces after a paragraph or section headings)

A respectable number of credible resources used, cited in the paper as in-text citations, and included on the reference page. A good rule of thumb is at least 2-3 scholarly sources per page of content.

Final Paper

This page is the assignment page for the Final Project for this class. Per the syllabus, the premise of the final project is the following:

It’s no secret that Washington State is the center of the tech industry renaissance outside of California’s Silicon Valley or NYC’s Silicon Alley. Though the presence of those companies here in the Seattle-Tacoma Metro Area has both been the cause of massive economic growth and the cause of social growing pains. In this fast-growing metropolitan area, cities are struggling to address this growth.

Your question is: What is one policy that would contribute to effectively addressing housing, transportation and/or economic development issues equitably amidst the tech boom?

In this assignment, you are expected to create a  power-point presentation and a report that details your approach to solving this problem. I understand this won’t be perfect but, your presentation cannot exceed 12 slides in length, including the bibliography.

The report must be a minimum of 700 words and it must also include a bibliography. The two bibliographies will have some overlap yet, the one for your report would- in theory- be more extensive.

Your must include a bibliographies must be formatted using APA ctiation style with each. See the style guide here (Links to an external site.).

Helpful Tips to Developing a Quality Discussion

CSS. It’s a web designer’s playpen. With so many colors, type settings, layout options, and responsive possibilities, it’s easy to turn a stylesheet into a million line nightmare. However, with a few simple actions you can clean up the mess so the CSS works with you, not against you. A few weeks ago, frontend developer Julie Cameron came through our virtual Treehouse office and bestowed some wisdom we still can’t shake. So now I’m sharing it with you all!

It’s only natural. Entanglement happens.

The cascade. It’s a blessing and a curse. It’s often the case that when you change the styling of one element, other elements inadvertently get restyled. Misuse of !important makes the cascade come to a screeching halt, and leaves you with inconsistencies from one element styling to the next. As websites get bigger or more developers start working on the codebase,

the CSS tends to grow as well. Without a plan, it becomes the Wild Wild West (wickey wild, wicky wicky wild wild wild west…Will Smith isn’t gonna get you out of this one).

  • Modular – You can get to the point of building a page without writing a single line of CSS.
  • Predictable – It doesn’t matter where you put the component, it’ll behave the same and look the same. It’s easy to write the code. You have systems in place for naming it. It’s more intuitive to write.
  • Maintainable – It’s quick and easy to deal with. It won’t break other things on the site.
  • Scalable – It’s hard to break and easy to build onto.
  • Dry – It eliminates the need for copy and paste duplication in the CSS.
  • Organized – There’s a place for everything.

Separation of container from content means that objects should look the same no matter where you put them. In other words, avoid location-dependent styles. For example, if you’re styling an h2 like this…
