I don’t have the labs so its just in general. I attached what the report has to be about. I need this by tonight at 11pm New York time.

GEO 101 Report 2

Plate Tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes

Write a lab report summarizing your work on the features of convergent plate boundaries. Review your work on subduction zone features from lab 3, volcanoes from lab 6 and earthquakes from lab 8. Your report should include:

Title

Introduction: Brief introduction to subduction zones and the work you did in these labs.

Method: What techniques did you use to determine the type of volcano that was featured on the map? How did you determine the epicenter and magnitude of the earthquake?

Results: What type of volcano is Crater Lake? Include your topographic profile to show your evidence for your conclusion. On which plate boundary is this volcano located? What type of magma would have been erupted? What was the magnitude of the earthquake you interpreted and where was the epicenter? On which plate boundary was this earthquake located?

Discussion: Explain the relationship between the volcano, the earthquake and the processes that occur at subduction zones. WHY were this magma type and this type of volcano produced at this location? Why did the earthquake occur at this location. Include a subduction zone diagram to help explain these processes.

Conclusion: Paragraph summarizing your findings from this lab.

Remember: This report is a write up of what YOU did in the lab, NOT a general report about plate tectonics. It is important that you understand this distinction to get a good grade.

Timeline Assignment

I need to create a timeline for major geological events in earth history. There are 20 given events. I need you to..

1. create a list of such events in chronological order in a citation form (examples below)

2. find 5 ADDITIONAL major geological events and add it too the above list

3. write a 100-word explanation of why those five. (100 words for all five collectively, not each)

 Example:

Each entry must include a date, a label (including the genus (Italicized) for organisms marked with an asterisk), and a source

Here are two examples of appropriate labels to get you started:

4.5 Ga. Formation of the Moon. (M. Barboni et al. Early formation of the Moon 4.51 billion years ago. Sci. Adv. 3, e1602365 (2017))

or

70 Ma. Favorite Cretaceous dinosaur. Therizinosaurus. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therizinosaurus)

Causes And Effects Of Global Climate Change

  • Type a 4 full page minimum, double-spaced paper (size 12 font in Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman) on the causes and effects of global climate change.
  • You must address how and why climate change happens and what the consequences of it are?  How is it affecting the landscape, environment, people, and anything else.  What are humans doing to combat climate change?  As part of the paper, if you like, you can pick one or a few countries and use them as examples to see how they are being affected by climate change.
  • For the bibliography page, you must use at least 8 sources and list them in MLA or APA format.  The bibliography page is not part of the 4 page minimum.  In order to receive a 50/50 on the paper, you should not only address all of the above listed issues, but it must also be well thought out and written with very few to no spelling and grammatical errors.

6 Pages Paper

GSC 103 Research Paper

For the GSC 103 Written Assignment you will be required to write a 1000-1500 word research paper on any of the topics listed on the syllabus for this course (A list of topics can be found below). Only two students will be allowed to report on any given topic (first come-first serve basis). This is a great opportunity for you to practice researching and writing on a subject within the Earth Sciences, and to develop an understanding that extends beyond the material discussed in the lectures. You may even choose to pick one aspect of these major topics. For example, perhaps you are interested a particular mineral, metal, or other natural resource and you want to research its geology and economics. That is fine, as long as you check with me first. Furthermore, I understand that we are not all geoscientists and I want the relatively relaxed guidelines involved in this paper to allow you to find and research a topic that truly interests you. Finally, I hope you all to have fun with this project. Pick a topic that really catches your eye and learn about it in detail. I find that when time is spent to truly learn about something, we often carry that knowledge with us into the future.

As you research your topic, I would like you to consider the following questions:

1) What is the history that has led to our current understanding of the topic you are researching? 2) Who are the main players involved in this research?

-In other words, who were the scientists involved in the discovery / major advancements in the history and evolution of the subject (if your topic has any)?

3) What are the major processes (physical and / or chemical) involved in your topic? 4) How does your topic affect our world, today?

-If you are researching a subject involved with deep time, how does it influence our thinking and understanding of our place on this planet, today? -If you choose energy and mineral resources, what are their environmental and economic impacts?

You do not necessarily have to incorporate all of these questions into your writing, but I want them to be a guide for you to use as you research your topic. When I grade these papers I will be looking for the following:

1) Organization—I want to see that you can present your ideas in a clear and organized way. 2) Detail—research (and really any) papers require a close eye to detail. I understand that we are not all

wordsmiths, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have to properly take the time to read and check our work. Sloppy papers reflect the intention of the writer, so just take some extra time to read and appreciate your product.

3) Consistency—you must use citations to correctly reference your work. The particular format you choose is not important, so long as it is consistent. If you have any questions regarding proper citation use, please ask.

4) Time—although these papers are not long, I want to see that you took this project seriously and spent the time to adequately research your writing. This goes beyond organization, detail, and consistency. I want to see that time was taken to thoroughly and properly execute the research of your particular topic.

Please email me and let me know which topic you are writing on by 9/20—all papers are due on 11/15 (hard copy— please NO emailed papers)—Late or emailed papers will receive half credit. Additionally, there is no writing credit available for this course.

Please complete this assignment by yourself and abide by the University of Miami Honor Code.

GEOL108: EARTH SCIENCE AND SOCIETY

Should total approximately 8 pages, double-spaced, roughly 2000 words. APA format.

essay should be addressing the questions/points below:

  • Do we see an overall warming of the environment?
  • Some theorists envisioned that we would see a more pronounced warming of minimum temperatures than maximum temperatures.  This might result in a reduced range of temperatures.  What trends does the data show?
  • Many theories that look at global warming envisage more drought and less surplus water conditions for inland or continental locations.  Therefore, we might see some trends in precipitation amounts and the frequency of certain amounts of precipitation.  What do the trends show?
  • In reference to actual evapotranspiration, surplus/deficit conditions and runoff/streamflow, what might we expect with a warming climate?
  • Are there clear-cut answers in the trends that we see?
  • What does that tell us about researching environmental issues like global warming?
  • Are there other types of data or information that we need to look at to make a worthwhile analysis?  If so, what would they be?
  • What are the implications of the results of this study?
  • Can you link any of the climate trends to human agency?
  • If the trends continue in their current direction, what are the potential implications for people living in the Wabash Watershed?

In short, we are looking at a specific geographic area, the Wabash Watershed.  We are looking at a specific time period, 1961-1990, utilizing raw, 5-year average, and 10-year average data, with respect to temperature, precipitation, evapotranspiration, moisture surplus, moisture deficit, and surface runoff.  What does this data tell about this region over this time period, and what does it indicate about the future?  Does this tell us anything, positively or negatively about global warming theory?

400-600 Words Reflection On Two Gould Essays

First, read “The Evolution of Life on Earth.” Next, read “The Golden Rule: A Proper Scale for our Environmental Crisis.” [These essays are both posted under the Week 10 block.] Then, click “Add Submission” below, and submit a 400-600 word reflection on these readings. Consider how Stephen J. Gould suggests that life doesn’t really have a clear progressive plan (in the first essay) but then also argues for ethical and environmental progress (in the second essay). In particular, how does Gould reconcile these very different themes (absence of clear evolutionary progress versus the need for ethical/environmental progress)? Throughout your response, don’t hesitate to reflect on how the broader realities we’ve learned in this class (evolution, history of life, etc.) relate to your own viewpoints and values. Does any of this help you contextualize your educational, moral, and social pursuits? Feel free to take this any way you want, but you’ll be graded based on quality writing, coherence, and thoughtfulness.
