Texas Govt..(DB)

Select ONE of the following topics to answer for the Lesson Writing Assignment. The writing assignment should be a minimum of 500 words. You should find most of the information you need to complete the assignment in the chapter, but you are allowed to use outside sources as well (such as news articles or government websites). DO NOT simply copy the information word for word from your sources. If you use information directly from the textbook or another source, it should be cited and the properly formatted citation should be provided at the end of the assignment. All assignments will be analyzed with SafeAssign to identify possible plagiarism.

1. Read Chapter 1 in the textbook, including “You Decide: Voices of Texas: Immigration in Texas,” and write an essay that addresses the following questions:

  • How is the population changing in Texas?
  • What are some of the possible political implications of the changing population in Texas?
  • After reading the “You Decide” passage, do you agree with Dan Patrick or Julian Castro? Should undocumented immigrants be given a pathway to citizenship or be sent back to their country of origin?
  • What are the pros and cons of illegal immigration in regards to both the U.S. and Texas economies? Consider how illegal immigrants have positively or negatively affected the economy.
  • Do you believe compromise is possible on immigration? Are the only two options deportations and amnesty? Is there a third option?
  • What role should the state of Texas play in the immigration policy?

2. Read Chapter 2 in the textbook, including “You Decide: Voice of Texas: Proposition 2 and Same-Sex Marriage,” and write an essay that addresses the following questions:

  • As compared to the US Constitution, why is the Texas Constitution so frequently amended?
  • How does the turnout for elections dealing with constitutional amendments compare to turnout for presidential elections?
  • Do you think the level of turnout influences the legitimacy of the amendments that are passed or rejected?
  • Is Proposition 2 a violation of the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution?
  • Should Proposition 2 be deleted from the Texas Constitution? Why or why not?
  • Must the state recognize same-sex marriages that have been licensed and performed lawfully in another state? If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Do you believe that religious freedom gives people the right to deny their services for same-sex marriages? If so, why? If not, why not?

3. Read Chapter 3 in the textbook, including “You Decide: Voices of Texas: Voting Rights and Redistricting,” and write an essay that addresses the following questions:

  • Has the evolving relationship between the federal government and the states changed for the better or worse? Why?
  • How has Texas often responded to mandates from the federal government?
  • With regards to voting rights, is this an area where the federal government should have more or less influence on the states?
  • What is Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act?
  • Does preclearance violate the Tenth Amendment and give the federal government too much power, or is it a necessary check on the states to make sure that minorities are not discriminated against?
  • Texas argued that it is unconstitutional to impose preclearance unless a state’s racial discrimination was as bad as what existed in 1965. In 2013, then-Attorney General Gregg Abbott argued that voter discrimination is no longer a problem in Texas and consequently is exempt from federal oversight. Do you agree? If yes, why? If not, why not?
  • What are two other areas where Texas is at odds with federal laws or mandates?

You must cite a minimum of five references (sources) in the paper and include a works cited page at the end of the assignment to provide full bibliographic information for each of the references that was cited in the text of the paper.

Current event papers must be formatted according to MLA style, for papers with no title page (see the following link to access an online resource for MLA style: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/). 1. How can I validate the accuracy of my statement?

2. How is this information relevant?

3. How does my conclusion address the complexities of the issue?

4. What is another interpretation or viewpoint of the issue?

5. Does my conclusion follow from the data and/or statements I have provided?

What It Means To Be “American”

· Prompt

PROMPT

From 1865-present, the conception of who is an “American” deserving of the full rights of citizenship has changed over time. In this essay, we want you to review the answers you gave to the reflective questions and think back over what you have learned in this course.  Also consider the historical context, causality, and change over time when describing thinking about changes in the definition of who is, and who is not, an American.

In your essay analyze how the definition of what it means to be “American” and the rights of “Americans” changed between 1865 and today.

Hint 1: Think broadly about what it means to be American first, then think on groups pressing their case for inclusion, while considering issues of ethics and civics.  You must include social/cultural/socio-economic analysis in this essay.  You may include political (but not required).  What primary documents have you read that address these issues?  Don’t forget the key individuals and events to use as evidence. Successful essays will consider a broad range of evidence in support of arguments.

Hint 2: You may wish to concept map or outline key issues first and then pull out your three strongest arguments to develop more fully in the essay.

Requirements for the Final Essay

· Must be in Rule of Three format with a introduction and strong thesis statement, 3 paragraphs of the body (each with their own thesis statement – one for each of the three key points of your overall thesis), and conclusion. So a minimum of 5 paragraphs.

· This is a fact based essay, you must provide specific and detailed evidence for your hypotheses.

· You must utilize a minimum of three primary sources from the assigned materials (primary sources posted in the Blackboard course module OR found under the primary source section of each chapter in American Yawp only; you may not utilize sources linked to in the reference section of American Yawp) as evidence in your essay

· You must utilize a minimum of three secondary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay

· You may only use materials assigned in this course for your essay (we have vetted all the materials utilized in this course, other materials may not be appropriate or accurate). If you use outside sources your grade will be docked.

· DO NOT QUOTE sources, paraphrase in your own words and cite

American Yawp

· You must consider ethics/ethical decision making in this essay

· Don’t forget about historical geography, where something takes place matters and it may be important to your argument.

· You must use Turabian citation style in this essay; all citations must be footnote style citations (no parenthetical cites allowed, no endnotes/works cited at the end, you need footnotes).  Be sure to review how to properly cite a primary source that may be contained in another work and be sure to use page numbers where possible.

· 12 pt type, 1 inch margins, double-spaced

NOTE ON CITATIONS

CITATIONS are REQUIRED for this essay.  You will lose points for failure to cite or incorrect style of citations.

How the Assignment is Graded

The assignment is worth up to 200 points.  The following factors are taken into account when we grade:

RULE OF THREE THESES – Do you have a well thought out and clear overall thesis in your introduction? Do you have a thesis statement for each of your three paragraphs of the body? Do the paragraphs of the body follow the overall thesis statement?

EVIDENCE – You must have solid evidence for each point you raise in the thesis.  Evidence is not simply a statement, there must be an explanation of how that evidence supports the thesis statement.

Example:  If you were writing a paragraph on the causes of the Cold War, you might use the Baruch Plan as an example.  Simply writing “the Baruch Plan was a cause of the Cold War” in your paragraph would not be enough and would not be analytical. However, the following sentences do provide a good analysis of this piece of evidence:

“One cause of the Cold War was the failure of the United States and the Soviet Union to agree upon a plan for nuclear disarmament after World War II.  The Baruch Plan, presented by the US, would maintain the American atomic weapon advantage for the foreseeable future.  This played into Stalin’s suspicions of the Americans’ true motivations toward the USSR.”

Did you use the minimum number of primary sources? secondary sources?

HISTORICAL ACCURACY, CLARITY, AND LOGIC

Is your argument clear and does it make sense?  Is it historically accurate?  Does your evidence prove your point? Does your analysis answer the prompt?  Have you considered the concepts of ethics and civics, change over time, and any relevant historical geography factors in your essay?
