Person as a Processor

Research the topic of the “wet mind” popularized by Stephen Kosslyn.

  • Considering the human person as a processor, why do some cognitive psychologists think that the mind operates according to computational principles, similar to those followed by computers?
  • Why do other cognitive psychologists emphasize the unique features of the “wet mind” that enables it to perform more efficiently than computers?

  • Case Study: Fetal Abnormality
Jessica is a 30-year-old immigrant from Mexico City. She and her husband Marco have been in the U.S. for the last three years and have finally earned enough money to move out of their Aunt Maria’s home and into an apartment of their own. They are both hard workers. Jessica works 50 hours a week at a local restaurant and Marco has been contracting side jobs in construction. Six months before their move to an apartment, Jessica finds out she is pregnant.
Four months later, Jessica and Marco arrive at the county hospital, a large, public, nonteaching hospital. A preliminary ultrasound indicates a possible abnormality with the fetus. Further scans are conducted and it is determined that the fetus has a rare condition in which it has not developed any arms, and will not likely develop them. There is also a 25% chance that the fetus may have Down syndrome.
Dr. Wilson, the primary attending physician, is seeing Jessica for the first time, since she and Marco did not receive earlier prenatal care over concerns about finances. Marco insists that Dr. Wilson refrain from telling Jessica the scan results, assuring him that he will tell his wife himself when she is emotionally ready for the news. While Marco and Dr. Wilson are talking in another room, Aunt Maria walks into the room with a distressed look on her face. She can tell that something is wrong and inquires of Dr. Wilson. After hearing of the diagnosis, she walks out of the room wailing loudly and praying aloud.
Marco and Dr. Wilson continue their discussion, and Dr. Wilson insists that he has an obligation to Jessica as his patient and that she has a right to know the diagnosis of the fetus. He furthermore is intent on discussing all relevant factors and options regarding the next step, including abortion. Marco insists on taking some time to think of how to break the news to Jessica, but Dr. Wilson, frustrated with the direction of the conversation, informs the husband that such a choice is not his to make. Dr. Wilson proceeds back across the hall, where he walks in on Aunt Maria awkwardly praying with Jessica and phoning the priest. At that point, Dr. Wilson gently but briefly informs Jessica of the diagnosis, and lays out the option for abortion as a responsible medical alternative, given the quality of life such a child would have. Jessica looks at him and struggles to hold back her tears.
Jessica is torn between her hopes of a better socioeconomic position and increased independence, along with her conviction that all life is sacred. Marco will support Jessica in whatever decision she makes, but is finding it difficult not to view the pregnancy and the prospects of a disabled child as a burden and a barrier to their economic security and plans. Dr. Wilson lays out all of the options but clearly makes his view known that abortion is “scientifically” and medically a wise choice in this situation. Aunt Maria pleads with Jessica to follow through with the pregnancy and allow what “God intends” to take place, and urges Jessica to think of her responsibility as a mother.

Biology and Technology in the Real World – Fracking
Fracking (hydraulic fracturing) and tar sands (oil sands).  With society’s dependence on nonrenewable fossil fuels, the oil & gas industry is turning to hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands to extract natural gas and oil.  A friend asks you “What’s all this controversy in the news about fracking and tar sands?”  Briefly explain to your friend how hydraulic fracturing and tar (oil) sands are used to obtain these fossil fuels. Then, in more detail, describe the environmental problems that may result from these processes and why they are controversial. Issues that should be addressed involves water, air and soil pollution with special focus on global climate change, effects on human health, and effects on other species and natural ecosystems. Finally, give your opinions on possible solutions to these environmental problems, with your reasoning backed by information from reliable information sources.
1. Find at least three reliable information sources on fracking.
2. Write a paper on fracking with title page, introduction, several paragraphs addressing the questions, conclusion and references. You must write in your own words and paraphrase information from the selected information sources, addressing each of the questions for your chosen topic. Your paper should consist of less than 10% direct quotes. Your paper should be 1000 words, excluding references and title page. Use APA style for references

Adulthood Discussion (Discussion 5)
The subjects of retirement and health insurance are much in the news these days. Discuss your plans for retirement with a special emphasis on income after retirement and health insurance. After a lifetime of paying Social Security and Medicare taxes in every payroll check, your grandparents and parents are counting on having Social Security and Medicare to help with the inevitable loss of income occuring at retirement.
Things may be different for your generation. Many are discussing privatizing Social Security and doing away with Medicare. Even Republican voters in the State of Florida are opposed to this plan. Read the report on a survey of Republican Primary Voters who objected 2:1 to plans to change these benefits (among Hispanic voters, opposition was even stronger with 4:1 voters opposing changes). Given what you know of the volatilty of the stock markets that are up one day and down drastically another, would you risk your retirement to the stock market? Would you risk your health on having the ability to pay for private health insurance when you retire?
Despite what you’ve heard, Social Security and Medicare can be saved. The generation entering the workforce today (The Millenials) are an even larger generation than the retiring Baby Boomer generation. As long as as many or more are paying into the system than those who are retiring, the programs can and should be saved. You never know how your life will turn out and it is essential to have a basic retirement cushion to live on. Moreover, it is your money after all. You have paid into both Social Security and Medicare with every paycheck since you started working.
What can you do now to help save Social Security and Medicare? Some believe it is essential to send politicians to Washington and Tallahassee who will protect those benefits. But it is not enough to save these benefits. What can you do to guarantee a comfortable retirement and good medical care in your old age?
Remember the criteria for the discussions:

  • 150-200 word original post
  • Covers every detail in the discussion description
  • Submitted on time

Nursing post, 300 words min, 1 scholarly source (5 years or less), APA format.
*** for the hypothetical example, use one that is nursing related***
post
………………………………………………………………….

  • Distinguish between statistical and clinical significance of results.
  • Would it be possible to have research study results that supported the acceptance of the null hypothesis and demonstrate clinical significance? Provide a hypothetical example that supports your answer.
  • If you question the credibility of the results from a qualitative study, would the information have clinical significance for your practice area? Why or why not? Provide a hypothetical example that supports your answer.

Project
As you complete this project, think about the following:

  • What do we know about psychological disorders and their treatment?
  • What does research tell us about the most effective treatment for disorders?

At the end of this activity, you will:

  • Submit your course project dealing with psychological disorders and their treatment.

At the end of this module you will be required to submit a course project on psychological disorders and their treatment. You will be asked to choose one of the following:

  1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

After choosing the one disorder on which to focus, make sure to:

  • Describe key features of the disorder, including its symptoms
  • Address the biopsychosocial explanations that could account for the development of that disorder

After choosing a disorder, read the associated module in the textbook and choose an appropriate therapy or therapies for that disorder from the following choices:

  1. Behavioral Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)
  2. Cognitive Therapy (you may choose combined Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy)

When applying your chosen therapy or therapies (i.e. an eclectic approach), make sure to:

  • Discuss and explain the specific methods of that therapy that would be utilized in the treatment of your chosen disorder.
  • Provide a rationale for the effectiveness of your type of treatment (i.e. present evidence that supports the effectiveness of that therapy for your chosen disorder.

From the information presented in the Psychology webtext and from your research in the library or onthe Web (i.e. make sure to incorporate what psychological research and studies have shown that would support your points raised in the paper), present your position and support it with credible sources of information using APA style citations and references. You are required to use at least three (3) references, to include the course webtext; the other references should come from psychological journal articles or from relevant psychologyspecific websites. Before submitting your paper, use the CourseProject page in chapter 5 of the webtext to check your paper against the rubric.
You are expected to present a minimum 750 word response. The paper should be submitted in a WORD document in 12 point; Times New Roman font. Given this guideline, your paper should be 3 – 4 pages in length; excluding the title page, abstract, and reference page. Refer to the APA Style guidelines document for information on the title page, abstract, and reference page.
