Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory

Week 4: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

When first introduced, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) was unlike any other therapeutic approach. For years, psychotherapeutic techniques were driven by psychoanalytic theories. These techniques were time consuming, leaving many therapists frustrated with the length of time involved in helping their clients achieve a sense of relief. With the development of CBT, however, therapists were able to help their clients heal more quickly. This poses the questions: If CBT is more efficient than other techniques, why isn’t it used with all clients? How do you know when CBT is an appropriate therapeutic approach? Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory.
This week, as you examine cognitive behavioral therapy and its appropriateness for clients, you compare it to rational emotive behavioral therapy. You also develop diagnoses for clients receiving psychotherapy and consider legal and ethical implications of counseling these clients.

While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) have many similarities, they are distinctly different therapeutic approaches. When assessing clients and selecting one of these therapies, you must recognize the importance of not only selecting the one that is best for the client, but also the approach that most aligns to your own skill set. For this Assignment, as you examine the similarities and differences between CBT and REBT, consider which therapeutic approach you might use with your clients. Cognitive Behavioral Theory Versus Rational Emotive Behavioral Theory.

Learning Objectives

Students will:
  • Compare cognitive behavioral therapy and rational emotive behavioral therapy
  • Recommend cognitive behavioral therapies for clients

To prepare:

  • Review the media in this week’s Learning Resources.
  • Reflect on the various forms of cognitive behavioral therapy.

The Assignment

In a 1- to 2-page paper, address the following:

  • Briefly describe how cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) are similar.
  • Explain at least three differences between CBT and REBT. Include how these differences might impact your practice as a mental health counselor.
  • Explain which version of cognitive behavioral therapy you might use with clients and why. Support your approach with evidence-based literature.

Note: The School of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The Sample Paper provided at the Walden Writing Center provides an example of those required elements (available at http://writingcenter.waldenu.edu/57.htm). Intervention Strategy Paper
Intervention
3 page paper
Present a mutually developed and agreed upon intervention strategy with specific goals and objective. Provide a rationale for your selection.
Describe your intervention from beginning to end, including termination. How did you help the client prevent or resolve problems? How did you negotiate mediate and advocate for your client. Select and discuss at least 3 practice skills (micro/macro) used in your intervention with the client.
Write a critique of your work with the client. What did you do well in terms of the intervention? What could have been done to improve the outcomes with the client? How was the intervention empowering? How may it have been discriminatory or oppressive?
Provide a discussion of whether the intervention was developed from a theoretical practice model. If so, which practice theory? If not, what practice theory could have been used to facilitate better outcomes? Regardless, analyze and provide evidence-based knowledge about the theory-based intervention (used or proposed) and its effectiveness.
Here are the section headings (in red) you should have to get maximum credit–3 points per section. Have one certain intervention in mind when you write this section—Cognitive behavior theory (CBT), Motivational interviewing (MI), , Solution Focused, Strengths based, etc.
Treatment plan development with goals and measurable objectives
For example:
Goal: Increase and practice ability to manage anger:
Objectives: (pick one or two) These will be used to write your evaluation section, so the more measurable the better. SMART objectives are explained in another file under Course Materials
-In the next 2 weeks, the Client is able to walk away from situations that trigger strong emotions as measured by a client observation checklist 100% of the time.
-During the next 30 days, the client will be 90% free of tantrums/explosive episodes measured by self report and client incident sheet documentation.
-In the next week the client will learn two positive anger management skills and be able to discuss these with the therapist 100% of the time when asked.
Intervention description—describe the detailed implementation of the intervention selected
3 Intervention skills describe 3 intervention skills used based on the intervention selected (in TF CBT, for example, you might pick a relaxation exercise, trauma narrative and cognitive challenging).
Intervention strengths and weaknesses what are the benefits (=strengths) or not (= weaknesses of using this intervention with the client?
Theory behind the intervention what is the theory behind the intervention—who researched it for clients like yours and what are the results of these studies? This section can be moved toward the beginning of the section if that helps. Please cite your references and add a reference list at the end.

8. Using the stated statistic in the abstract for # of drug overdose deaths in 2015, see if you can find the population of the United States in 2015, to determine a percentage of deaths due to overdoses. Next see if you can determine or find the overall percentage of deaths due to overdose in the US in either 2016 and/or 2017?
It is recommended that you construct your response in a Word document, then copy and paste your answer.
The student’s work should be presented in an ESSAY of around 500 words.
Referencing:
The essay should include a list of references (print and electronic) at the end in addition to in-text referencing as per the requirements of the Harvard Referencing System. Proper referencing is a serious academic requirement and skill and will be rewarded accordingly.
Writing and Discussion Topic:
Cultural encounters can prove to be very enriching to all those involved, yet could prove very confusing and disrupting. In most cases these encounters lead to a conflict of values, both at the individual and societal levels. Explore how cultural encounters are manifested in literary works, specifically short stories from An Anthology of Short Stories from Five Continents, with particular reference to “The Distant Past” by William Trevor.
In the process of answering the TMA, you should make sure to include the below five sub questions:
1)  How is the concept of cultural encounter treated in the short story “The Distant Past”?
2) Is the author, William Trevor, aware of the cultural encounter theme? How does he manifest that awareness?
3) Are the main characters, mainly the Middletons, aware of the cultural encounter theme? What clues do they provide of such awareness?
4) How does the Friday visit to town highlight the theme of cultural encounter in “The Distant Past”?
5) How does the usage of “contrasts” (present versus past, now versus then) throughout the short story help in highlighting the theme of cultural encounter?
Guidance on Addressing the Topic:
Before you embark on writing the essay, you need to read carefully Book 3 Cultural Encounters in order to familiarize yourself with the topic at large and make use of the skills presented in the book when writing your essay. You are strongly advised to consult sources on the topic and widen your knowledge of the topic under consideration, but it is of the utmost importance to document any words or ideas that are not your own. Once you have the material ready, it is advisable that you follow the steps (1-5) indicated in the section above to avoid omitting sub-questions. Although the topic is most relevant to Unit 3, you should demonstrate your knowledge of the complexity of the concept of cultural encounters as presented in the all the units to draw lessons and examples from them if need be, and not model your treatment solely after a particular treatment appearing in a single unit.
