Professional Beliefs Paper: Person, Nursing, Environment, and Health
Northern Illinois University NURS 347 Professional Beliefs Paper re: Person, Nursing, Environment, and Health Guidelines & Rubric (50 points) PURPOSE: There are four dominant concepts in nursing: Person, Environment, Health, and Nursing. Diversity (culture) is a sub-concept that moves through each of the four major concepts. Students may choose to include culture with Person. People enter nursing with definitions of these concepts that derive from their own personal experiences. Inherent in their definitions are their values, attitudes, and beliefs. It may be helpful to think of this process as values clarification-what these concepts are and what they are not. This paper is a reflection on the four concepts and how the concepts interrelate based on the semester’s learning experiences. This paper is a personal statement of values; therefore, there are no “right” or “wrong” statements. However, it is expected that the student will address the four concepts including culture; identify major aspects of the concepts; draw relationships among them; analyze and evaluate alternative points of view; and draw conclusions that logically derive from the values expressed by the student for the concepts of Person, Environment, Health, and Nursing. The paper is a reflection of the student’s ability to engage in critical thinking. The criteria for assessing critical thinking include: · Interpretation of concepts using salient arguments and substantiating a point of view by reflecting alternative points of view. · Explanation of assumptions and reasons with accurate interpretation of evidence. · In-depth and thorough thinking processes that reflect open mindedness, fairness, and honesty in recognizing personal biases. · Willingness to reconsider judgments. WRITING GUIDE: 1. Title: Personal Professional Beliefs Paper 2. Introduction: Brief paragraph stating the purpose of the paper. 3. Your definition of the four concepts and substantiation (why) for your personal beliefs. (What the concept IS and what it IS NOT based on varying points of view reflected in the literature.) 4. Interrelationships between Person, Environment, Health, and Nursing. 5. Conclusion that comes from the four concepts of the paper. 6. It should be typed using APA format with 12 point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, one inch margins, header, section headings, and content shall not exceed 5 pages. 7. The writing should be clear, coherent, and organized with appropriate grammar and syntax. 8. Provide a title page and a reference page (these are excluded from the 5 page limit). 9. Include at least 3 references from scholarly journals, biographies, texts, or professional organization or .gov resources. These may support/contrast your belief. 10. Limit the use of direct quotes. May use brief quotes sparingly. Angiosperms (flowering plants) are the largest Phylum in the plant kingdom Plantae. These plants have true roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. The roots grow into the soil to anchor the plant in place and take up water and nutrients. The leaves are above ground and act as the main organs for photosynthesis. Stems provide above-ground support for the plant and operate as conduits to move nutrients and water throughout the plant. Flowers contain the male and female reproductive organs of the plant.
Plants develop specialized roots, stems, leaves, and flowers to make them better adapted to their environment. With the anatomical features described above in mind, do some research to find an angiosperm that has modified leaves, stems, roots or flowers that are structurally different from the norm, do not function in the normal manner, or that function in an unusual manner. For example, a cactus has spines in place of leaves. The spines help reduce water loss that would occur through a large, expanded leaf in a desert environment, and they also help to prevent herbivory.
Recommended:
- Browse through the pages in the following link to learn more about gymnosperms and angiosperms: Evolution of the Seed Plant.
- Watch this video to learn more about modified roots, stems and leaves: Modification of Root, Stem and Leaf.
Complete all of the following steps:
- Choose an angiosperm with at least 1 unusual organ, characteristic, modification, or adaptation.
- Describe the anatomy (structure) and physiology (function) of the angiosperm you chose.
- Explain the unusual characteristic(s) or modification(s) and how it differs from the standard root, stem, leaf, or flower.
- What benefit does the modification provide to the plant you chose?
- Research at least 1 other plant, or review posts made by your peers to devise a potentially advantageous new adaptation that would benefit your plant.
- Consider the environment, potential threats, and changing climate, and then come up with an adaptation that would further benefit your angiosperm. Explain the potential concern your plant will face and how your new adaptation would benefit the plant. For example, gypsy moth is an introduced species spreading west and south from New England. The caterpillars can strip all of the leaves from a maple tree but do not eat the waxy leaves of holly that produce a toxin, theobromine. If maple trees had waxy, toxic leaves like the holly, then they would be protected from these pests.
Utilize at least 1 credible source to support the arguments presented in your post.
Do not use the course text or other texts for this assignment. This is a research-based paper.
Your research paper will be an exploration of two (2) theories of family therapy, the clinical applications and the evidence-based practice and interventions associated with each theory.
Your paper will have two parts:
Part I : Research [75% of your paper]
Compare and contrast Research on the 2 models of family therapy you chose.
Areas to address must include but are not limited to:
What research purports to be the strengths and limitations of each theory and therapeutic techniques associated with each theory.Your own understanding of the research presented and its clinical application. In consideration of evidence-based practice, discuss the research on culture, diversity and socioeconomic status specific to each theory. What legal and ethical issues may arise with each theory and technique?
Part II: Application [25% of your paper]
Create a family intervention plan integrating and applying the Research you presented in Part I. You can create your own original family scenario, or you can use fictional characters from TV, the movies or literature. Do not use real persons. This is to be a fictional family you are working with. Please specify the source of your fictional scenario.
Briefly set the stage of the family you will be treating. This should be no more than ½ page.Given the evidence-based research on the theoretical techniques you presented in Part I, discuss how you would treat this family. Remember to integrate and apply the information from Part I.Consideration of culture, diversity and legal/ethical issues must be included.
The final paper should be 10-12 pages plus a title and reference page.

Theoretical Approaches and Counseling Techniques
Compare the counseling techniques you observed in the person-centered counseling videos (with the child, Wood), to the counseling techniques you observed in the video that corresponded to the additional chapter you selected in Counseling Children.
Identify the key similarities and differences between the two theoretical approaches in the following areas, using course readings to support your conclusions:
· Typical therapeutic goals for helping children and adolescents.
· Counseling methods and process used by the counselors used in the video sessions.
· Specific techniques used by the counselors, and the client’s response.
· Adaptability of the theory for use with children from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

How Theories Determine Interventions
Discussion Scenario
For this discussion, first imagine the following scenario.
A father of a 4-year-old boy brings his son to counseling. His son has recently begun biting other children at preschool. As would be expected, this behavior is extremely upsetting to the teachers, the children who have been bitten, and their parents. The director of the preschool has told the father that the problem must be addressed by a professional if the child is to remain in preschool.
The father of the boy wants to get the best help he can, so he arranges an initial session with five counselors who advertise themselves as working from five different theoretical perspectives. He asks them all the same two questions: “Why is my child biting? And how will you make him stop?” He receives the following answers:
Psychodynamic Counselor
· Why: “Your child may have an oral fixation that he has tied to his aggressive impulses.”
· What to do: “When your child’s unconscious motives have been freely expressed and resolved, his behavior and peer interactions will become more age-appropriate.”
Behavioral Counselor
· Why: “It doesn’t matter why; what matters is precisely selecting the behavior you want to change.”
· What to do: “Through observation, we will determine the contingencies that are reinforcing this biting behavior and eliminate them, while simultaneously establishing rewards for desired behaviors.”
Adlerian Counselor
DISCUSSION- 1
The Effects of “To Err Is Human” in Nursing Practice
The 1999 landmark study titled “To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System” highlighted the unacceptably high incidence of U.S. medical errors and put forth recommendations to improve patient safety. Since its publication, the recommendations in “To Err Is Human’ have guided significant changes in nursing practice in the United States.
In this Discussion, you will review these recommendations and consider the role of health information technology in helping address concerns presented in the report.
To prepare:
Review the summary of “To Err Is Human” presented in the Plawecki and Amrhein article found in this week’s Learning Resources.
Consider the following statement:
“The most significant barrier to improving patient safety identified in “To Err Is Human” is a “lack of awareness of the extent to which errors occur daily in all health care settings and organizations (Wakefield, 2008).”
Review “The Quality Chasm Series: Implications for Nursing” focusing on Table 3: “Simple Rules for the 21st Century Health Care System.” Consider your current organization or one with which you are familiar. Reflect on one of the rules where the “current rule” is still in operation in the organization and consider another instance in which the organization has effectively transitioned to the new rule.

Assignment 2: Applying Theories of Motivation to Situations
Over the decades, numerous theories of motivation have been developed. Most of the older theories have been shown to not be particularly valid and, therefore, not good predictors of motivational force. More contemporary theories can explain the motivational force in particular situations well. Therefore, industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists must understand which theory best predicts/clarifies human motivation based on the particulars of the situation.
For this assignment, the following contemporary theories are considered:
- Self-Determination Theory/Cognitive Evaluation Theory
- Goal-Setting Theory
- Self-Efficacy Theory
- Reinforcement Theory
- Equity Theory/Organizational Justice Theory
- Expectancy Theory
Using the Argosy University online library resources, the readings for this module, and the Internet, review these contemporary theories of motivation. Then, correctly apply the appropriate theory to the following two scenarios:
- A professional working for a major corporation is assigned goals each quarter. If all goals are achieved, a substantial bonus is paid. One quarter, workers review their new goals and make the determination that they are not likely to achieve all the goals.
- A person works in a department with eight coworkers, and they all do the same job. They believe that one worker (who they know well) is receiving more perks and rewards than they are for the same amount and quality of work.
For each scenario:
- State the selected theory of motivation that best applies to that scenario.
- Summarize the theory chosen.
- Explain how the theory selected explains/predicts motivational force.
Your final product should be a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document and should use a minimum of 3 sources from professional literature. Professional literature may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, and .gov).
Be sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.
