Module 3 – Case

PATHOGENICITY, IMMUNOLOGY AND EPIDEMIOLOGY

Case Assignment

In this Case Assignment, you will focus on the materials that you viewed on the Home page.  After reading the text and viewing each of the links provided there, address the following questions:

  1. What are three methods of disease transmission mentioned in the epidemiology animation on the Home page?  Provide some examples.
  2. What are the most common vectors mentioned in the tutorial on transmission of disease?
  3. Which pathogens were mentioned in the Virulence Factors animations (host tissues and defenses)?  List all of the pathogens mentioned and then choose two to discuss.  In your discussion include:
  • How do they hide from host defenses?
  • How do they invade or penetrate the host?
  • Research how they reproduce, and ID them using at least three phenotypic descriptions (you can refer to the dichotomous key from the previous module for phenotypic descriptions).
  1. Note whether the pathogen you chose was reported as a risk to the workplace in the Infectious Diseases in the Workplace article you read on the Home page.
  2. Note the total cases and related mortality reported by the CDC Stats in the linked report.

Assignment Expectations

Page Length: 2 to 3 pages
Format
TUI encourages all students to comply with APA style and format guidelines for proper citation of references.
Scholarly Content
Your case assignments are considered scholarly works. Your final work should include peer reviewed (scholarly) sources. Please use the formatting demonstrated in your Background section to cite the tutorials and readings from the Module Overview.
Please keep in mind that you should not use sources such as “Answers.com” or “Wikipedia” or “Wikianswers.”  None of these are scholarly sources and they can be “modified” by any registered user which makes them unreliable.
Appropriate Headings and Paper Flow
Remember that you are preparing a formal academic paper. Your paper should make use of appropriate headings and subheadings.  You should not cut and paste the questions posed and answer them like a “Question and Answer” session.  Your finished paper should read like an academic paper. Submit your final word document to the Case Assignment dropbox.

Creating Case Notes
Whether you are a mental health or a school counselor, taking careful case notes is an important part of your counseling process. Good case notes not only help you keep track of the work that you are doing with your client or student, they also protect you.
For this discussion, once again review the case vignettes in the presentation, Ethical Issues in Record Keeping and Technology, in this unit’s study. Select one vignette and use it to discuss the following:
· Write a case note using the SOAP or DAP format that is presented on page 140 of your text, Ethical, Legal, and Professional Issues in Counseling. You may need to be creative and enhance the case study in order to write a comprehensive case note.
· Provide a summary of how you decided what information to include or exclude.
Support your summary with support from the unit readings. Follow current APA style and formatting guidelines in your post.
Response Guidelines
Respond to the initial discussion posts of two other learners. What reactions do you have to the ideas the learner has presented? Include examples from your own experience to support your perspective, and raise questions to continue the dialogue.

Discussion: Feminist and Social Justice Theories
Feminist and social justice theories may not immediately come to mind when considering the profession of school counseling. Furthermore, feminist theory is often mistaken for an approach that is exclusive to women, and social justice theory to the conventions of social equality, when in fact, their principles are largely based on concepts that are consistent with counseling and applicable to all populations including strengths-based, holistic, client-centered, and advocacy.
A closer examination suggests that feminist and social justice theories seem applicable to the school setting. This is particularly true when working with oppressed or potentially marginalized student populations that face issues related to disabilities, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, or race/ethnicity, to name a few. Advocacy is rooted in feminist and social justice theory. The professional school counselor is positioned well to advocate for students who might otherwise experience oppression. This oppression negatively impacts the student’s school experience, thus preventing the ignition of his or her full potential.
For this week’s Discussion, you analyze the use of feminist and social justice theories in school counseling.
Post by Day 3 a description of your understanding of feminist and social justice theories. Then, explain how the use of feminist and social justice theories in school counseling might benefit a student. Provide a specific example and justify your response.

Assignment 1

The lesson on intelligence presents the range of intelligence quotient scores in relation to the Normal Distribution and discusses the extremes of intelligence on either side of the curve.  While we hear a lot about ‘gifted and talented’ programs in school, we don’t hear much about it after one graduates from high school or college.  For this assignment, you will visit a website devoted to an organization for people solely with high I.Q. scores. You will then submit your own thoughts on intelligence in general as well as what you’ve learned about this group.

  1. Visit the “Mensa” website (http://www.mensa.org). Explore the various links and read about its mission, who it serves, qualification for membership, etc.
  2. Provide a summary of what you’ve found and your thoughts on the organization.
  3. Next, discuss your own views on intelligence – what were your thoughts on the various theories presented in the textbook/lesson?   Be sure to link material you’ve learned in this lesson to demonstrate your ability to appropriately apply information.
  4. Your summary should be comprehensive and more than just a paragraph in length. It should demonstrate thoughtful dialogue and critical thinking.
  5. You must cite all of your sources appropriately in APA format and include references.

Unit Assignments Unit II PowerPoint Presentation
Imagine that you are a practicing psychologist, and you are the featured presenter for the upcoming psychology conference. Your chosen topic centers upon factors that influence human behaviors and cognitions. In your presentation, you want to teach the audience about biological, evolutionary, and environmental factors that influence behaviors. To do this, you will need to prepare a PowerPoint to present to the audience. In your PowerPoint presentation, be sure to include the below concepts: Identify ways in which the environment can both nurture and thwart mental ability.
Explain how nurture and nature play interactive roles in shaping behavior. Summarize the effects of some of the main neurotransmitters in the brain, and list four hormones that influence behavior. Your PowerPoint presentation must be at least eight slides in length, not including the cover slide and reference slide. In addition to your textbook, you must use a minimum of one scholarly source. Any information from an outside source that is used should be cited appropriately according to APA format.
You may use the notes field in PowerPoint to expand on your ideas, if necessary, but this is not required. Your presentation style should appear professional, using appropriate formatting and graphics. For this assignment, you will compose two short critical essays explaining and evaluating arguments by other authors. This assignment allows you to analyze an issue from a variety of perspectives and assess arguments for or against the issue. By focusing your attention on how the original authors use evidence and reasoning to construct and support their positions, you can recognize the value of critical thinking in public discourse.
Read the two articles “Shooting in the Dark”, and “Focusing on the How of Violence” and write two separate analytical summaries.
This assignment has two parts.
Part 1—First Article
Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main claims. Include the following:

  • Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
  • Identify and discuss three ways the author uses evidence to support assertions.
  • Analyze how the author signals this usage through elements such as word choices, transitions, or logical connections.

Part 2—Second Article
Write an analytical summary of the article focusing on the article’s main claims. Include the following:

  • Provide a brief summary of the argument presented in the article.
  • Identify any value-based assertions in the article and how the author supports these value-based conclusions with evidence.
  • Discuss how this evidence does or does not demonstrate relevance, consistency, transparency, and speculation.
  • Analyze how the author signals the use of these elements through language. For example, word choices, transitions, or logical connections.

Write a 1,000–1,200 word paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources

 Psychology homework help
Prior to beginning work on this discussion, please read the following required articles:

  • “Relations Between Inductive Reasoning and Deductive Reasoning”
  • “The Effect of the Environment (Real and Virtual) and The Personality on the Speed of Decision Making”
  • “Decision-Making Theories and Models: A Discussion of Rational and Psychological Decision-Making Theories and Models: The Search for a Cultural-Ethical Decision-Making Model”
  • “Seven Basic Steps to Solving Ethical Dilemmas in Special Education: A Decision-Making Framework”
  • “Looking for a Psychology for the Inner Rational Agent”

Play the expert in the following scenario and apply ethical principles and professional standards of decision-making to your rationale and actions:

  • You are a counseling psychologist in a state prison. You have been counseling a new inmate, and he confided in you that one of the other inmates has indicated he is considering suicide. He does not divulge the name of the other inmate and refuses to talk any further about the issue. Consider the following steps in your decision-making process:
    • Define the problem.
    • Explore the alternatives.
    • Consider the consequences.
    • Identify ethical considerations.
    • Determine how you would reduce bias in your decision-making process.
    • Explain your decision.

Using appropriate citations and references, explain how the empirical research and theoretical models presented in the assigned articles suggest the importance of applying decision-making strategies in one’s own practice. Support your argument with empirical research.

Literary Analysis Draft
By the due date assigned, submit your essay as a Microsoft Word document to the Discussion Area at the bottom of the page.
By the end of the week, comment on at least two of your classmate’s submissions using the peer review questions provided below.
The major assignment for this week is to compose a 900-word essay comparing The Odyssey with either The Song of Roland or Dante’s Inferno. In this paper you will write an in-depth analysis using your own ideas and excerpts from the epic poems in the form of quotes, paraphrase, or summary.
Select one of the following topics:

  1. Although nearly two thousand years separate The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno, both works are epic poems that:
    • Explore the relationship between humanity and the divine. Employ journey as a metaphor for maturation.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Caution audiences about the appeal of temptation.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.
    • Compare and contrast how one of these topics is developed in The Odyssey and Dante’s Inferno.
  2. The Song of Roland and The Odyssey, though separated by thousands of years, are both epic works whose protagonists are warriors engaged in violent conflict: Roland is a medieval Crusader and Odysseus is on a long journey home after conquering Troy.
    Additionally, both works:

    • Explore the relationship between humanity and the divine.
    • Reveal and teach cultural values about leadership.
    • Contemplate the nature of immortality.
    • Examine the moral and practical implications of loyalty and betrayal.

Compare and contrast how one of these topics is developed in The Song of Roland and The Odyssey.
Proofread the rough draft to ensure:

  • The thesis is clear and focused, and the introduction includes all the necessary information.
  • The discussion of evidence includes quotes, paraphrases, or summaries and synthesizes this material and your ideas.
  • The conclusion is appropriate and reinforces the paper’s main ideas without repeating the introduction word for word.
  • The essay is formatted in APA style throughout. It uses appropriate grammar, spelling, and mechanics, and quoted material does not exceed 25% of the paper.

When responding to your peers please answer the following questions:

  • Locate the paper’s thesis. Is it obvious or unclear? Does it establish an interpretation of a key theme from the poem? Is the thesis as specific as it needs to be?
  • Is each paragraph organized around one key point? Do topic sentences clearly indicate the focus of each paragraph?
  • Does the author support each main point with direct quotations that are analyzed and explained? Do you have any suggestions for improvement?
  • Where do you disagree with the author’s analysis? What aspects of the poems are left unexplained?
