Question Description

The theoretical foundations of qualitative and quantitative methods are very different, but many researchers believe both methods should be used in the research study to increase validity and reliability. What advantages or disadvantages do you see in using both types of methods in a nursing study? Support your answer with current evidence-based literature.

Information Technology in Public Health

Public health surveillance and prevention efforts in the U.S. reflect the involvement of numerous health care providers and organizations. Government agencies such as the CDC often function as a hub for the collection, coordination, and communication of public health-related data. Common applications of public health IT to promote and improve the health of populations include (but are not limited to) biosurveillance, disease registries, and immunization tracking. The timely and appropriate implementation of these applications can have a significant impact on the ability of providers to deliver health care to the their patients, which, in turn, can have a profound effect on a community’s overall state of health and wellness. Consider the dire impact a SARS outbreak might have, for example, if patient diagnoses were not reported and shared regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Prepare for this Application as follows:

  • Conduct a literature review of a specific application of health information technology in public health and locate an example in which the application was used to address a public health-related concern. (You might wish to begin by researching a particular surveillance program, disease outbreak, disease registry, prevention program, or other public health-related event, and then identify the technology involved in this activity.)
  • Find out how this application has impacted the public’s health. Learn also about any ways in which health care providers and organizations were involved in the use of this information technology.

Then write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe the specific application you selected and the ways in which it addresses a public health-related concern. Summarize the potential benefits to the public, as well as any possible drawbacks, arising from the use of this application.
  • Explain the role of hospitals and other health care organizations in contributing to or making use of this public health-related IT application.
  • Discuss other implications of this application for health care providers and organizations. How has it impacted (or might it impact) clinical or administrative practices in hospitals or other health care institutions? Provide a rationale for your response.

Paper 2 – Values and Empathy paper

Please respond to the two Scenarios in this paper (See the Answer format attached).    Scenario 1: You are a new nursing student who has been hospitalized for injuries following a major car accident. Earlier today you were told the fracture in your right leg will require complicated surgery to repair and extensive rehab to recover. There is a question as to whether you will ever regain full use of your leg. The surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Tonight you are alone in your hospital room and the night nurse has just entered. What are your concerns when you reflect on this personal patient experience? What will your experience be like? Scenario 2: You realize that you share a different values system from the nurse. You reflect that this might be challenging for you as a nurse someday. These values might be due to differences in lifestyle, cultural background, belief system, or attitudes about health care. Reflect on your own values and identify a personal value/belief that may become a conflict for you in delivering quality patient care.

As the professional nurse, you realize that your nursing care area often sees patients with the same particularly challenging nursing care issue (NOT medical care issue). Include allof the following in your answer to this discussion:

  • Identify the nursing care issue or problem and justify why it is a nursing care issue in need of implementation of evidence. Remember, this should not be a medical issue.
  • Explain how you would search the nursing literature for evidence on this topic (including search terms you would use) and how you would critically appraise the evidence found in your search. NOTE: You do not need to perform the search and provide an article for this discussion, but you may do so if you like.
  1. Nursing Roles in Quality Improvement.

How do nurses promote patient safety and improve quality at your workplace? How do you report errors and near misses? What changes would you suggest be made on your unit or facility to improve a non-punitive culture of safety?

  1. Leadership in Diverse Situations

Nurses demonstrate leadership in many situations. For this discussion, select one of the following situations that you have not previously experienced and tell us how the nurse would demonstrate leadership in that situation:

  • Communicating with legislators to influence health policy1
  • Clinical leadership at the bedside
  • Nursing management of units or facilities
  • Impact of systems-based practice on leadership
  1. Use of Informatics in Professional Nursing.

How do you use informatics and technology in your nursing practice? How do you see that use changing in the future? What ethical issues have arisen or might arise from use of technology and informatics in professional nursing?

Significance of Nursing Concepts within the Profession

This answer must be at least 300 words, reference not included in word count.  Needs at least 2 references that are peer reviewed articles within the last 5 years.  Both articles need to be cited within the answer at least once.  Needs to be in APA format.  ANAWER MUST BE ORIGINAL, no plagiarism.  Below is the question.

Significance of Nursing Concepts within the Profession

This discussion considers the metaparadigm of nursing and the four concepts of the nursing profession—person, environment, health and nursing profession.  In the advanced clinical practice area of the nursing, apply EACH of the four concepts to this area of nursing.  Be sure to apply EACH of the four concepts and include an example that demonstrates the application to this practice area.

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to a) identify a nursing theory, b) analyze the importance of the selected theory to the nursing profession, c) summarize key concepts and relationships among the concepts of the selected nursing theory, d) present views of the selected theory on areas of specialization, and e) communicate ideas in a clear, succinct and scholarly manner.
REQUIREMENTS:
Description of the Assignment
In this 5-6 page paper (not including the title or reference pages in the page count), the introduction contains a few statements about nursing theory in general, identification of
one nursing theory to be used in this paper, and the sections of the paper. The selected nursing theory can be from any of the three types of theories:
• grand theory (e.g., Roy adaptation model),
• middle-range theory (e.g., Benner’s model of skill acquisition),or
• practice theory (e.g., Im’s theory on the pain experience of cancer patients).
Note: the theories named here are examples only; students may choose any nursing theory.

1. The first section of the paper is a description of the importance of nursing theory, in general.
2. Key points and inter-relationships of those points of the selected theory are summarized. Biographical or historical information about the selected nursing theory or the nurse theorist is not included.
3. The selected nursing theory’s views or ideas about nursing leadership, nursing education, health policy, or nursing informatics (only one of these specializations) are discussed briefly, using two examples from real life to illustrate the views. Real-life examples come from a student’s own practice or from the scholarly literature.
4. The paper is concluded by presentation of insights gained (what was learned) about nursing theory through writing the paper.

Criteria for Content
• Introduction includes general comments on nursing theory (such as a definition of nursing theory and past exposure or experience with nursing theory), the name of the selected nursing theory, and the sections of the paper. A heading is not used.
• Section one contains an analysis of the importance of nursing theory, in general, to the nursing profession. For example, one might address why nursing theory is studied and how nursing theory impacts the profession and patient care.
• Section two is a summary of key concepts and relationships among the concepts of the selected nursing theory. Remember to state the name of the theory again. Avoid biographical and historical information about the theory or theorist. At a minimum, include reasons for selecting this theory, the purpose(s) of the theory, key concepts, relationships among key concepts, and how this theory addresses nursing’s metaparadigm. Students are not limited to these areas.
• Section three presents a discussion of how the selected nursing theory views nursing leadership, nursing education, nursing informatics, or health policy, along with 2 real-life examples illustrating the views. If the selected theory does not explicitly discuss the chosen specialization, a possible view of the specialization can be proposed. Remember that real-life examples come from a student’s own practice experiences or from the scholarly literature. Keep each example succinct (about 1 – 3 paragraphs).
• Section four is the conclusion. In the conclusion, ideas and understandings about nursing theory learned from writing the paper are shared.

Prepare for interprofessional stakeholders a 10–12-slide presentation (not including title and reference pages) explaining how nurse leaders can use information technology to improve nursing practices that support and sustain positive patient outcomes. You do not need to actually present your assessment but be sure to include speaker’s notes for each slide.

The dissemination of evidence-based practice outcomes helps nurses build stakeholder engagement and support for the use of information system and technology for health care delivery.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

Instructions:

This 2000 word written assignment has two distinct parts that you should address separately. Please use headings for each part.

You do not need to provide an introduction or a conclusion for the written assignment or any of the parts.

There are two family scenarios for you to choose from; select ONE scenario and use this for your entire assignment.

Part 1 – Nursing Care of the Family: Assessment (500 words)

 Create a genogram to visually depict the family’s structure. You must use the PowerPoint slide which will be supplied to you within the Assessment Folder on Learning@Griffith course site to create your genogram. Save the slide as a picture file (*.jpeg), and insert the picture into your document.

  •   Below the genogram, summarise the structure of the family to demonstrate your understanding of the family assessment findings.
  •   Use the Australian Family Strengths Nursing Assessment Guide (AFSNAG) to identify and briefly describe two (2) strengths of the family you are assessing.  Part 2 – Nursing Care of the Family: Planning, Implementing and Evaluating (1,500 words)
    •   Select two (2) issues/challenges for the family or a member of the family you have selected. These issues may be identified by the nurse, family or both. These can be health, social, or developmental family issues/challenges e.g., breastfeeding, social isolation, transition to parenting; they should not be ‘medical’ issues e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure.
    •   For each issue/challenge identified in the family assessment (allow approximately 750 words per issue):
     a) Describetheissue b) Plannursingcare c) Implement nursing care d) Evaluate nursing care o Use appropriate evidence from scholarly literature to describe the issue and discuss what is known about the issue/challenge. o Provide a relevant nursing goal and justify the goal (explain why it is relevant to the issue) using appropriate evidence or policies. o Outline one nursing intervention that supports the family to achieve the goal. Each nursing intervention should be supplemented by the recommendation of an existing online resource for the family and an appropriate referral.

Your assignment this week will be an APA paper to include title page, level headings, and a reference page.
Case study #1
Mrs. Franklin-Jones was admitted from the Emergency Room to Cardiac Intensive Care one week ago with a diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. She has recovered as expected and is moving to the cardiac step down unit today. She is talking with Nurse Julie Hernandez, as she gets settled in her new room, “I was really surprised when I got that bad pain in my chest! I knew I had high pressure but I just didn’t think it was that bad. I try to take my medicine like they told me to in the clinic but sometimes I forget. I guess that I need to study those papers they gave me about what foods I should eat and not eat. I better take care of myself! Momma had bad pressure and it killed her! Who knows—I may even have to learn to cook different than I was taught in Jamaica! I may have to let Tomas do the cooking. He’s got more time at home now than I do since he lost his job. There isn’t too much time between my shifts at the school cafeteria and my new housecleaning job. You know my sister is coming up from Jamaica to see me. I think she is bringing me some bush tea. That’ll set me right!”

Using Leininger’s Culture Care Model, what factors in the story shared by Mrs. Franklin-Jones should be considered by Nurse Hernandez when planning for the patient’s discharge?
Why is the theory of Culture Care Diversity important in the delivery of nursing care for all patients?
Using Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality, develop a plan of care for Mrs. Franklin-Jones.
Discuss the strengths and limits to Leininger’s Theory.

Case Study #2
Claude Jean-Baptiste is recovering from post-hip replacement surgery and has been transferred to the Rehabilitation Institute adjacent to the hospital. When he enters the unit, he sees welcoming signs written in several languages including his own, Creole. Since there are no nurses on that shift that speak Creole, they use a language line to ask for translation services. During this initial nursing assessment, the translator informs Mr. Jean-Baptiste that the nurses invite him to have a relative at his side so that they can be sure to understand and meet his needs. He is asked about Haitian customs and beliefs that they might honor. Mr. Jean-Baptiste is encouraged to bring food and spiritual care items, and to share the warmth of his culture with the nursing staff.

Discuss assumptions of the Transpersonal Caring relationship. What is the nurse’s role?
How is love, as defined by Watson, evident in this caring moment?
How can the nurse creatively use self to create a healing environment?
Discuss the strengths and limits to Watson’s Theory.

This paper should include 2 outside references and your book. The essay should be between 1500 and 1750 words in length.
