As a team, consider the following scenario:

On Dec. 7, 2000, the Cincinnati Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) office heard through media and police reports that there were two deaths at a nursing home in Ohio. OSHA determined that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should take a lead role in performing an investigation.

Because the nursing home had many residents who had unhealthy respiratory systems, the nursing home routinely ordered and received tanks that contained pure oxygen. During one delivery, the supplier mistakenly delivered one tank of pure nitrogen in addition to the three tanks of pure oxygen that had been ordered. The nitrogen tank had both an oxygen and nitrogen label. An employee at the nursing home connected the nitrogen tank to the nursing home’s oxygen delivery system. This event caused two nursing home residents to die, and three additional nursing home residents were admitted to hospitals in critical condition. Within the following month, two of these three additional residents also died, bringing the total death toll to four. (Based on accident #837914 www.osha.gov)

Write a 200-word paper in which your team compares the Normal Accident Theory to the Culture of Safety model. Include the following in your paper:

  • Explain what factors can play a role in organizational accidents similar to the one highlighted in the scenario.
  • How do organizational processes give rise to potential failures?
  • How can certain conditions influence errors and violations within the workplace (e.g., operating room, pharmacy, intensive care unit)?
  • What are the errors and violations committed by “sharp end” individuals?
  • How does the breaching of defenses or safeguards affect these accidents?

Topic: Servant Leadership From a Christian Perspective: In the Real World

                                   Leadership Journal: Humility

Journaling provides a valuable tool for recording, reflecting on, and reviewing your learning. This approach provides an opportunity for you to “connect the dots” and observe the relationships between and among activities, interactions, and outcomes.

Unlike a personal journal of thoughts and feelings, this Leadership Journal is a record of your activities, assessments, and learning related to this academic experience.

Journal entries should include a record of the number of hours spent with your nurse leader each week.

Write a journal entry of 750-1,500 words on the subject of humility, including the following:

1. Provide observations and thoughts on the activities in Weeks 13-14.

2. Describe an interaction or decision point this semester in which your nurse leader demonstrated humility or a missed opportunity to promote the success of others.

3. Summarize your practicum experience with your nurse leader. What insight into your own leadership style were you able to see? What do you believe was the most important thing you learned in this experience?

4. Utilizing servant leadership principles, outline a plan to improve your own success as a leader. Identify specific steps you plan to take to create this improvement.

5. Reflect on at least two things you learned from the “Issue of Humility” video

The Doctoral Degree and Professional Nursing Practice

In response to the continuous changes in health care today, nurses are charged with staying well informed on many rapidly evolving aspects of patient care. They are also expected to contribute to the improvement of health care quality. Engaging in doctoral education is an admirable way to position oneself for accomplishing this goal, and it can lead to new professional opportunities.

Why did you decide to enroll in graduate school? What informed your decision to pursue your chosen degree? How will earning this degree influence your career?

This week, you consider the characteristics of various programs, including the DNP and the PhD. The focus of the DNP degree is on clinical practice, whereas the focus of the PhD is on research. In conjunction with other professional colleagues, DNP- and PhD-prepared nurses often collaborate to analyze critical issues and find appropriate ways to address them.

This first Discussion provides an opportunity for you to examine what it means to earn a doctorate and how your selected degree program relates to your professional goals.

To prepare:

  • Consider the reasons you have chosen to pursue an advanced degree. How do you anticipate that earning this degree will support your professional goals?
  • Reflect on the comments shared by the experts in this week’s media regarding the value of a DNP degree and the various roles available to DNP-prepared nurses, as well as the characteristics of the PhD program and opportunities for PhD-prepared nurses.
  • Based on the information presented this week, have you developed any new ideas or goals for your future? If so, what are they?

By tomorrow 5/31/17, post 550 words essay in APA format with 3 references from the list below, that include the level one heading as numbered below:

Posta cohesive response that addresses the following:

1)       What does it mean to be a nurse with a practice or research doctorate? What are the expectations associated with this degree? How might this be different for a nurse who holds a different degree?

2)       How do these considerations relate to your motivation to pursue a doctoral degree right now?

In this media presentation, Dr. Joan Stanley discusses how the DNP degree evolved. In addition, Dr. Linda Beechinor and Dr. Susan Stefan share their experiences completing the DNP degree and explain how it has influenced their nursing careers.

Patients traditionally have received all their medical information from their physicians. However, “Dr. Google” and “Nurse Bing” have increasingly become trusted sources of health information. As a result, everyone from pharmaceutical companies to prosthesis suppliers has added direct-to-consumer advertising to their promotional mix. This is very controversial because it tends to disrupt the traditional doctor-patient relationship.

This project provides you with the opportunity to thoroughly research a current direct-to-consumer advertising technique (online ads or social media, for example) and how it is used to promote a healthcare product or service. This project will help you understand how to communicate directly with healthcare consumers and improve your marketing knowledge.

Your final project is due in Module 09. There will be individual assignments along the way. The module they are due is noted in the time line below.

Requirements

For this project, you will write an original research paper with a body of 5-6 pages. The paper should focus on a direct-to-consumer technique, thoroughly explaining what it is, why it’s important, and how it fundamentally impacts healthcare marketing.

Your paper final should consist of the following pages:

Title Page – captivating title, your name, title of the course, date

Body – 5-6 pages consisting of introduction, background on your topic, research support using in-text citation, personal evaluation, and strong conclusion.

Reference Page – in APA format.

Research and Writing Requirements include the following:

  • Incorporate key elements of a quality research paper (e.g., strong thesis, attention-getting opening, topic sentences, etc.).
  • Use proper mechanics: clear, concise, complete sentences and paragraphs, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. (See style handbooks recommended by your college’s Online Library, which you can access through the Resources tab.)
  • Use five or six sources for the paper from your research. Your textbook is a good resource. Internet resources should be reliable, for instance, a university or government website. Please use one or two sources as available from your college’s Online Library. Use statements and ideas that you have come up with on your own and blend these in with your research. Do not plagiarize. If you want to use actual words from a source, put them in quotation marks with the source.
  • Follow APA format for citing your sources. APA format should be followed in parenthetical references to research in the body of the text and in the annotated bibliography in the References Page at the end. For APA guidelines, go to your college’s online library, which you can access through the Resources tab.

Evaluation

Each assignment leading up to the final assignment is evaluated and graded independently. Your instructor will provide specific grading criteria for each step of the project prior to its due date.

For Further Questions

If you have further questions throughout this project, please ask your Instructor. Post ideas and questions for your classmates in the General Course Questions forum in the Getting Started folder of this course.

Based on “Case Study: Fetal Abnormality” and other required topic study materials, write a 750-1,000-word reflection that answers the following questions:

  1. What is the Christian view of the nature of human persons, and which theory of moral status is it compatible with? How is this related to the intrinsic human value and dignity?
  2. Which theory or theories are being used by Jessica, Marco, Maria, and Dr. Wilson to determine the moral status of the fetus? What from the case study specifically leads you to believe that they hold the theory you selected?
  3. How does the theory determine or influence each of their recommendations for action?
  4. What theory do you agree with? Why? How would that theory determine or influence the recommendation for action?

Remember to support your responses with the topic study materials.

While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Validity in research refers to the extent researchers can be confident that the cause and effect they identify in their research are in fact causal relationships. If there is low validity in a study, it usually means that the research design is flawed and the results will be of little or no value. Four different aspects of validity should be considered when reviewing a research design: statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity. In this Discussion, you consider the importance of each of these aspects in judging the validity of quantitative research.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in Chapter 10 of the course text on rigor and validity.
  • Read the method section of one of the following quasi-experimental studies (also located in this week’s Learning Resources). Identify at least one potential concern that could be raised about the study’s internal validity.
    • Metheny, N. A., Davis-Jackson, J., & Stewart, B. J. (2010). Effectiveness of an aspiration risk-reduction protocol. Nursing Research, 59(1), 18–25.
    • Padula, C. A., Hughes, C., & Baumhover, L. (2009). Impact of a nurse-driven mobility protocol on functional decline in hospitalized older adults. Journal of Nursing Care Quality, 24(4), 325–331.

  • Consider strategies that could be used to strengthen the study’s internal validity and how this would impact the three other types of validity.
  • Think about the consequences of an advanced practice nurse neglecting to consider the validity of a research study when reviewing the research for potential use in developing an evidence-based practice.

Post on or before Day 3 (1) the title of the study that you selected and your analysis of the potential concerns that could be raised about the study’s internal validity. (2) Propose recommendations to strengthen the internal validity and assess the effect your changes could have with regard to the other three types of validity.(3) Discuss the dangers of failing to consider the validity of a research study
