How Healthy is Your Community?

The expression “Think Globally, Act Locally” guides your Discussion this week. By accessing information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, you will have the opportunity to learn how healthy your community is. You will identify the key health issues and vulnerable populations in your own county. Understanding the factors that influence the health status of residents in your county will provide you with a local perspective to compare to global health challenges you will examine in weeks to come.

To prepare for this Discussion, first learn a little about the health statistics for your county. If you are not located in the U.S., pick a state and county you might like to visit or know more about to complete this assignment. Go to the Community Health Status Indicators Report, and select your state and county to review your local report.
http://wwwn.cdc.gov/CommunityHealth/homepage.aspx?j=1

Then, go to the Walden Library and find at least one recent (within last 5 years) article in addition to your Learning Resources to document, and support, the concepts you include in your Discussion post. For suggestions to help with your search, visit the Library http://library.waldenu.edu/908.htm

By Day 4, post a comprehensive response to the following:

Using the information available on the Community Health Status Indicators Report, provide a summary of the following information in your county. Use the article(s) you located, as well as your Learning Resources, to support your answers to the following questions in your post:

1. Identify your county and state.
2. How healthy is your county? What evidence did you use to come to your conclusion?
3. What vulnerable populations are identified in your county? Are there groups of individuals who have health disparities? Are there issues related to access to care within your county? If so, what are they?
4. Highlight the risk factors for premature death and environmental health concerns seen in you county.
5. Where does your county excel or fall behind in preventive health? Provide examples.

Running head: YOUR TITLE HERE IN CAPS 1

TITLE OF PAPER IN CAPS 3

Header includes: Running head: on first page only. Your title is justified left and the page number is justified right.

Basic formatting: 1” margins on all sides. Times New Roman 12pt. font. Double spaced. Do not use bold text.

The title page should contain the title of the paper, the author’s name, and the institutional affiliation. NOTHING ELSE.

Title of Your Paper

Your Name

Kaplan University

Introduction

Each section of your paper should have a heading and should be center justified. All papers should include an introduction paragraph which tells the reader what you are writing about and/or the purpose of your paper. At the end of your paper there should be a summary paragraph where the major thoughts/concepts of your paper are summarized.

In-Text Citations

Anytime you reference ideas or content form another work, you need to provide an in-text citation which will correlate to a work on your reference page at the end of the paper. This citation will be in the first sentence which begins to reference that work and includes the author’s last name and the date of publication. There are two basic ways to accomplish this:

1. According to Morton, the author’s name can be included in your sentence which would be followed by the year of publication in parenthesis (2016).

2. It is more common to just include the author’s name with the year of publication in parenthesis (Morton, 2016).

At the undergraduate level, direct quotations from your references are discouraged; do not do it. For works with three or more authors, the first time the ideas are referenced you will need to include all the names in your citation (Morton, Packard, & Johnstone, 2017). Any additional references to that work may be cited without all the names (Morton et al., 2017).

It is my expectation that you will be citing references from peer reviewed journal articles found in the Kaplan library. If you have any questions on how to do that, then ask for an overview at the end of seminar. No online sources or webpages will be accepted as references.

In the reference list of this template I have included examples showing how books and journal articles are referenced. Please pay attention to the punctuation, the use of capitalization and, the use of italicized text. The basic rules of using punctuation, capitalization and italicized text can be found at https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/05/ . The reference list should be started on a new page; label this page “References” centered at the top.

Your PowerPoint should include the following types of slides, for a total of 7 or more slides.Title Slide
