What is Environmental Science?
Environmental science studies the complex interactions between humans and the world around them. These interactions involve many fields of science including physics, biology, chemistry, geology, and more. Because of the human investment in environmental science, researchers must also be aware of the social, economic, and ethical conflicts involved. Think about the environmental issues that affect your local community. Are there problems associated with getting clean water? How does your community deal with waste disposal, water treatment, and the generation of power? How has development of your local area changed over time? Do you think this has had any influence on the organisms that live in your local area?
Answer the following throughout the week:
· Describe one or two issues that you believe are related to environmental science. They may be things that are happening in your own home or community, or something affecting the country.
· Do some research to find some specific facts concerning this issue and provide a brief summary of your findings. Be sure to consult reliable sources of information like www.sciencedaily.com.
· What aspects of your everyday life do you think can be improved through a better understanding of environmental science?
· What things do you not understand that you hope this course will be able to clarify?
Your Discussion Board posts should be original, well thought-out, and respectful. Main posts should fully and completely discuss each question posed and make frequent, informed references to this unit’s material. Engage in ongoing, productive conversation by responding to a minimum of two classmates per topic. Responses to classmates should be at least 50 words. Remember, you will learn more by sharing ideas!
Please note: Borrowed material (quotes, summaries, or paraphrases) should make up no more than 10% of the total word count for all written assignments in this course, including Discussion. All writing must be in your own words and borrowed material must be properly cited and referenced.

 Week 3 Discussion
I need two page Initial Post and two replies, I will send replies later.
For each of the following situations, the market system has failed and/or just will not allocate resources efficiently:

  • Situation 1: Firm A produces cement sifters. The process includes the melting of metals and chemicals which give the sifters strength. In the production process, waste is produced and released into the river that runs alongside of the plant.
  • Situation 2: Some states allow students to attend certain universities within the state tuition free if they are a resident of that state. As a result of this policy, the state’s population is more educated and more productive in the workplace than many other states.
  • Situation 3: You live in a small subdivision with several residents. The subdivision has one short dirt road that provides access to all the homes. Bob, one of the residents of the subdivision, just inherited a large sum of money and decides to have the road in the subdivision paved. After the paving, Bob asked the other residents to pay their fair share of the costs for the paving, but they all refused.
  • Situation 4: The President of the United States has determined that the cost associated with national defense has become too expensive. In an effort to reduce costs and balance the budget, the President has asked the public to voluntarily pay for their fair share of the costs associated with national defense. One of his advisors insists that this would not work, another advisor thinks it’s good policy. Which advisor is correct?

Deliverables:

  • Using the scenarios above, prepare a 2 page Microsoft Word document that addresses 2 of the above scenarios and meets APA standards.
  • Include a summary section in your report that contains 5-7 bullet points identifying your major findings or conclusions of your paper.
  • Submit the summary section as your initial post in the Discussion Area by the due date assigned. Include the full report as an attachment to your posting.
  • Continue your discussions until the end of the week by commenting on at least two other submissions by your peers, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each post.
  • All submissions must be original and all resources must be properly acknowledged
At some point, your work with the client will end. Sometimes, it can be that the client no longer needs assistance. Other times, issues might still exist, but your help is no longer necessary. Using a previous example, you might have assisted the client who was homeless, had a drug addition, needed basic needs such as food and clothing, and was seeking a job. Your agency might have assisted in finding the client clothes and food and the client no longer needed assistance from your particular agency, even though the client might still be receiving assistance from a job placement center and a drug treatment center. Or, the client may have become aggressive toward you, so you had to discontinue the helping relationship.
Using your scenario developed with your interviewee, pretend that you have completed the helping relationship with your interviewee and that you are referring him/her to another agency, based on what you have learned from your interviews with the client. Think about the next steps the client would need to take to reach his or her goals, when making the referral.

To Prepare

  • Review the data that you collected during your recorded interviews on a fictitious client.
  • Review the Referral Form in the Learning Resources.

For this Assignment

Write a 1-page letter, using the template in the Learning Resources, to the referring agency that summarizes the following information:

  • Date of Referral
  • Demographics of Client: (whatever is appropriate to the situation) name, date of birth, gender, ethnicity/race, contact information
  • Reason for Referral
  • Brief summary of circumstances leading up to present reason for referral
  • A brief description of what you would like from the agency to which you are sending the referral (i.e., evaluate and recommend, take over services, etc.)
  • Next steps for contact (specify if client is supposed to follow up, if you will follow up, or if you will wait for referral agency to follow up with you, or follow up with client, and include the date by when you would like to hear back from the agency
  • Your name, role (as related to client), and contact information
  • Sign and date the request (electronically)

On a separate page, in 500–1,000 words:

  • Analyze how your quality interviewing and case management skills as a human and social services professional can be used for creating social change. Provide examples.

We’ve all grown up with varying degrees of “save the planet” rules, regulations, and suggestions. Natural resources have been used, abused, and depleted throughout the lifetime of civilization to the point where we are reaching out more to harness wind and solar power to help sustain future generations. As a whole, the human race is one of the biggest disrupters of ecosystems. We throw aside so much waste, from wrecked vehicles to product packaging, that we have become desensitized to the damage we are creating.
Today, many businesses have developed corporate social responsibility (CSR) plans to address environmental damage caused by civilization. Companies like Walt Disney, Lego, Google, Ben and Jerry’s, and many others are devoting money and time to making the world a better place.
Please respond to the following:

  • To what extent do you personally make purchasing choices based on a company’s social responsibility, brand, or reputation? Explain what motivates you to make these choices. Explain your opinion.

Prepare a 700- to 1,050-word narrative reflection discussing how your knowledge and understanding of human capital management has changed as a result of this course. Consider using the approach outlined below to facilitate your reflective thinking.
The I Used to Think …, Now I Think … approach is designed to facilitate a process of reflective thinking aimed at recognizing your individual development over time (Ritchhart, Church, & Morrison, 2011). Follow the steps below to guide your reflective discovery:

  1. Think about the topics discussed in this course.
  2. Consider your past and present self in relation to each topic area. After thinking about your past and present self, ask yourself:
  3. How did I used to think about _______________?
  4. How do I think about ____________________ now?
  5. Document your reflection for each course-related topic using the I Used to Think …, Now I Think … approach. Note: You may also adapt “Now I Think” to “Now I Know.”

Example: I used to think reflection was a process of summarizing the concepts I learned about, now I know that reflection is a purposeful process of examining my thoughts and actions to help me grow and learn.
After you have a better understanding of how your knowledge and understanding has changed, transfer your discoveries into a narrative reflection.
Submit your assignment.
