Nursing

In 2011 the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced the “My Plate” initiative, to help Americans make healthy food choices and to be active every day. Recently, new guidelines were released, and the initiative was updated to include, “MyPlateMyWins!”

Initial Discussion Post:

Review the following resource: United States Department of Agriculture: ChooseMyPlate.gov. (2015). Older adults. Retrieved from http://www.choosemyplate.gov/older-adults

Mrs. Jenkins is a 70-year-old patient at the primary care provider for a routine visit. As you are gathering data prior to showing her into an examination room, you note her height and weight, of 65 inches and 101 pounds.

  • Calculate Mrs. Jenkins’ BMI and interpret the result.
  • Discuss two additional specific assessments you would perform, and why the information you obtain in these assessments might be a concern to the RN.
  • Based on these assessments:
    1. What education would you provide related to this concern?
    2. Identify a member of the health care team with whom you would collaborate about this concern.

Be sure to use evidence from the assigned text or website, or other professional sources in your answer.

Base your initial post on your readings and research

Criminal Prosecution for Nursing Practice

Criminal Prosecution for Nursing Practice

Read the following case study and submit a 1- to 2-page essay in a Microsoft Word document using APA 6th edition in response to the questions.

Case Study:

Until recently, the risk of criminal prosecution for nursing practice was nonexistent unless nursing action rose to the level of criminal intent, such as the case of euthanasia leading to murder charges. However, in April 1997, three nurses at the Centura St. Anthony Hospital, outside of Denver, were indicted by a Colorado grand jury for criminally negligent homicide in the death of a newborn. Public records show that one nurse was assigned to care for the baby. A second nurse offered to assist her colleague in caring for the baby. A third nurse was a nurse practitioner in the hospital nursery. Because the baby was at risk for congenital syphilis, the physician ordered that the nurses give 150,000 units of intramuscular penicillin, which would have required five separate injections.

In relation to other problems the same day, the baby was subjected to a lumbar puncture, which required six painful attempts. To avoid inflicting further pain, nurse two asked the nurse practitioner whether there was another route available for the administration of the penicillin. Nurse two and the nurse practitioner searched recognized pharmacology references and determined that intravenous administration would be acceptable. The nurse practitioner had the authority to change the route and directed nurse two to administer the medication intravenously rather than intramuscularly. Unrecognized by the nurses, the pharmacy erroneously delivered the medication, prepared and ready to administer, in a dose ten times greater than was ordered—1.5 million units. As nurse two was administering the medication intravenously, the baby died. The Colorado Board of Nursing initiated disciplinary proceedings against nurse two and the nurse practitioner, but not against nurse one. The grand jury indicted all three nurses on charges of criminally negligent homicide but did not indict the pharmacist (Calfee & Plum, 1997).

Respond to the following:

  • Identify what emotions are evoked as you consider the Colorado Board of Nursing case stated above?
  • Should the courts take into consideration the fact that the nurses’ error occurred because they wanted to avoid causing the baby unnecessary pain? Discuss your thinking.
  • Can you think of other occupations in which the consequences of unintentional errors have greater legal implications? Discuss your answer.
  • How should the nursing profession respond to this frightening new legal threat?
  • Which sections of the State Nurse Practice Act did the nurses violate?

NCS3101: Child and Adolescent Health- Evidence Based Case Study- Nursing Essay Assignment

Kevin is a four-year- old boy who has been transferred to the hospital from a remote community by the family doctor for admission and surgical insertion of bilateral grommets. This follows a history of repeated occurrences of acute otitis media with effusion. Kevin and his grandmother have just arrived on the ward and the nursing team you are working with has been allocated Kevin to their patient load. You are responsible for conducting and an initial assessment when admitting Kevin to the ward, preparing him for theatre and developing a plan of care relevant to his stay on the ward. Kevin appears shy but is demonstrating some age appropriate curiosity about his environment, however, his grandmother is very wary and anxious around the nursing staff, not making eye contact and reluctant to engage with nursing staff. She is unwilling to let go of Kevin’s hand. Kevin has a drink bottle containing cordial in his hands.

Kevin has initial admission observations of, T- 37.4 o C, HR – 86, RR – 26 BP 90/55, and assessment weight 13.9Kgs, height 100cms. During the assessment you notice Kevin has old dried exudate and the remains of a recently completed course of ear drops surrounding the ears and in localised hair. You also notice extensive dental caries affecting his baby teeth.

Specific content guidelines
1. Students are required to research and write a case study essay with headings, directly relating to the above scenario. Examine and discuss your nursing assessment, pre and postoperative management and discuss all general nursing care incorporating a C & FCCapproach. Identify what nursing interventions you will consider and any referrals will you put into place during Kevin’s stay on the ward.
2. Discuss all of the members of the multidisciplinary team, and which particular members that would be involved in Kevin’s management of care, including what service that they will provide in the given scenario.
3. Referring to the C&FCC framework, develop a care plan incorporating an education plan for the child and his family that includes short and long term goals including discharge planning.Supportive rationale for your management is required. The care plan is not to be submitted but your planning, rationale for the plan and anticipated outcomes are to be discussed.

Discussion Question 2

Identify at least two modes of communication you have used for the elderly in your clinical practice. State what modes of communication were effective and which modes were challenging. Explain why.

Modes of Communication Used for The Elderly Clinical Practice

Two of the communication methods I use for older people in my clinical practice are listening and attending as well as non-verbal communication. Unequivocally, some people do not consider ” listening’” as a “communication.” For them, it seems strange that part of communication includes tranquility. However, listening is essential for excellent communication and is particularly crucial for one as a health care worker. I work closely with more elderly patients and often reveal vital things to me. In fact, some may prefer to use me instead of staff writing about what they feel or things that stress them because they need to know and trust me.

In addition, nonverbal communication is regularly represented by “body language’. Body language speaks volumes about the benefits and commitment of people in their communication. Despite the fact that people say the right things, the message can be lost if the body language suggests thinking of something completely different. The nonverbal communication of individuals speaks volumes about their benefit and commitment to the communication they have. It is essential that their posture, facial expression, outward appearance, and touch match the words they say (Standring, 2015).

Both methods were effective communication modes for me. This is because when listening and attending to the patients, I was able to understand the patients and treat them as per their needs. When it comes to body language as a non-verbal communication mode, I used different aspects such as body posture, eye contact, facial expression as well as touch. With a proper body posture and eye contact, the elderly people will feel conformable and trust the clinical officer so that they can get treated. Approaching them with a smile, a body language that shows that as a clinical officer, one is ready to help them, they will communicate their problem clearly, and that will help in treating them well (Ganasegeran et al., 2017).

Professor question to my assignment:

Please elaborate on what exactly you mean by “listening and attending”.
