Essay 2: Analysis of Colonization in “Whereas” and from Unincorporated Territories: [guma’] and at least one reading of your choice assigned during weeks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6.
Worth 100 points
Word Count 1,250-2,500 words; not counting works cited
Formula   MLA
Requirements:
Select one of the following five prompts to complete your essay. You must include in the upper left hand corner of your paper, where your name and the date go, that this is Analytical Essay #2 and the letter of which prompt you have chosen to attempt. This could be written like “Analytical Essay #2B”
a. In both “Whereas” and from Unincorporated Territories: [guma’], we can see that there is engagement and resistance to writings of and by the US Federal Government—a colonizing force if there ever was one—as well as from interaction with individuals who are colonizers, whether they want or mean to be. How do Long Soldier and Perez and a poet of your choice who has been assigned to you during weeks 1-6 engage with the conventions of the contemporary and ancient colonial style and frameworks of writing in their own artistic writing?
And in no more than a page, explain how you might attempt your own resistance and why. If you have space, you may provide a brief example—no longer than a page.
b. We understand that the meaning of any given word or text is established through a continuing process of social interaction, negotiation, consensus, and dissent, so: how do Long Soldier, Perez and a poet of your choice who we’ve read during weeks 1-6 participate in this social construction of meaning under the restrictions of colonialism?
c. Long Solder, Perez and several other writers we’ve read so far allude to or discuss outright Generational Trauma, an atypical neurological disability related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder—what is Generational Trauma, and analyze the discussion of it in these texts.
d. Analyze “Whereas” and from Unincorporated Territories: [guma’] and a poem of your choice from the work assigned to you during weeks 1-6 through a Post-colonial theoretical lens, define that lens with one or more of the nonfiction texts we’ve read on the subject of colonialism, decolonialization, postcolonialism, or sovereignty.
e. If you found a way to talk about “Whereas” and from Unincorporated Territories: [guma’] and another poem of your choice that I’ve assigned throughout week 1,2,3,4,5, or 6—you may do so.

Topic: Application of Standards of Care

For the case scenario, discuss the standard(s) of care that the parties will be held to in this case. How will the standards of care and the Nurse Practice Act for your state be applied in a court of law if the case is sued?

Case Scenario

SK, age 61, was admitted to the hospital. Because of understaffing of nurses in the hospital, her assigned RN did not assess her often enough and did not monitor her oxygen level.

SK went to the hospital with what she thought was a bad cold, and was admitted with a diagnosis of pneumonia. Following admission, she became increasingly feverish and short of breath, but her family’s calls for help went unanswered. In fact, her daughter was unable to find anyone when she went to the nurses’ station looking for help. The patient eventually stopped breathing, and someone finally responded to the family’s desperate and frantic calls for help. SK was successfully resuscitated, but sustained brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. She was left unable to walk, talk, or care for herself.

There were 41 other patients on this unit. Although the hospital’s own staffing standards called for 5 registered nurses and 2 licensed practical nurses to staff this unit, only 3 registered nurses were on duty. Records for the unit in question indicated that the hospital failed to meet its own staffing standards for 51 out of 59 days before this incident.

Security measures in healthcare

For ethical, legal, and business reasons, the security of health care data must be a top priority in health care organizations. HIPAA, for example, requires that health care organizations safeguard patient data, and there are serious consequences for breaches of privacy. Yet organizations have many types of sensitive clinical or administrative information they need to protect. To make their systems secure, health care organizations put in place policies as well as technical safeguards such as encryption and passwords. There can be a tradeoff, however, between system security and ease of use by health care providers.

Prepare for this Application Assignment as follows:

  • Select a type of health care organization, such as an outpatient clinic, nursing home, or hospital, and a specific department or function in this setting, such as a nursing unit, radiology department, or admissions, that would make use of sensitive health data.Bring to mind specific ways in which these data might be improperly accessed, lost, stolen, and so on.
  • Review this week’s Learning Resources, and conduct online research, as needed, to clarify for yourself the ramifications for individuals and organizations of security breaches in this department, and the solutions that have been devised to protect these data. In what ways might these security measures interfere with the staff’s ease of use of the system? Consider how best to balance these competing interests of data security and convenience for staff.

Then write a 2- to 3-page paper that addresses the following:

  • Describe key challenges for your selected health care department in ensuring that its sensitive data are secure. Illustrate with specific examples, and address not only technological issues but also human factors involved in ensuring its system security.
  • What are some implications of security breaches of its health care data? Who might be impacted and how?
  • Summarize security measures that might be taken as well as their potential impact on the staff’s ease of use of the information system.
  • Explain what you believe is the appropriate balance between data security and ease of use.

Discussion: Trend Analysis and ForecastingGreen Hills Health System comprises a small community hospital and a primary care practice. Located in a rural area the nearest large city is approximately 100 miles away. Individuals age 60 and older constitute one of the largest patient populations Green Hills serves. Recently members of the nursing staff have noticed that the numbers of geriatric patients admitted to the hospital seem to be increasing. Many of these patients have multiple comorbidities and need specialty care that is not available through Green Hills Health System. Some of the patients have commented that they lack the financial resources and transportation required to travel to the large metropolitan health care center that provides a variety of specialty services.Imagine that you are a nurse leader-manager in the organization described above. How could conducting an internal and external scan of the environment help you and your colleagues to identify opportunities for change moving forward? What literature sources would you consult to learn about trends and emerging issues that are likely to affect the organization? What data would you examine? In this Discussion you analyze trends that are likely to have a significant impact on nursing and health care in the coming years. You may use this Discussion to formulate initial thoughts related to trends and unmet needs that you might choose to address through the Course Project which is introduced this week.To prepare:Review the information on forecasting and trends in the Learning Resources.Conduct a search of the literature to investigate trends and emerging issues in nursing and health care. Evaluate the research evidence in the literature.Based on your research identify three trends that are likely to impact nursing and health care in the coming decade.Select one of these trends on which to focus in greater detail. Then conduct additional research and analyze evidence-based issues related to this trend.Based on your analysis consider whether this trend creates or contributes to an unmet need that currently impacts or will impact a specific group unit or organization.Post an analysis of the impact of your selected trend on nursing and health care in the coming decade. Explain how this trend creates or contributes to an unmet need that a specific group unit or organization may encounter now or in the coming years.Read a selection of your colleagues responses.Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days using one or more of the following approaches:Share an alternative perspective on a trend reported by your colleagues synthesizing the information to provide a different perspective.Ask a probing question substantiated with additional background information or research.Validate an idea with your own experience and additional resources.Required ReadingsUrsell F. Policy Memo/Brief
The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to practice writing policy
memos/briefs, which will be a useful skill in their international policy management career.
What is a policy memo/brief?
A policy memo/brief is a short document that outlines an issue or problem and presents
recommendations based on evidence for a non-specialized audience, such as key decision-makers,
NGOs, journalists, etc. It provides policy advice and is meant to be informative and persuasive.
Organization of your policy memo/brief
While in your professional careers policy memos might vary in their organization, below is a common
organizational flow for policy briefs, and one that you must use in these two courses.
• Title: Your title should clearly communicate your topic and may include the position of the
writer on the issue. A good title should grab the attention of the reader. (5 points)
• Introductory Paragraph/Executive Summary: Your memo/brief should include a short
introductory paragraph that summarizes the problem you are addressing in the memo. In
addition, the summary should briefly and clearly state the primary findings and
recommendations of the memo. (10 points)
• Description of the Problem and Reasons for Action: You will provide a brief overview of the
policy that needs to be addressed and why it is important to do something different than
current policy. Basically – what is the problem and why do we need to fix it? In this section,
students should discuss key measures that illustrate the problem and failures of current or past
policies. For example, current literacy levels and trends might be used to demonstrate the lack
of effective current policies. Data and information are important here. You should specifically
analyze the strengths and weakness of existing policy – be sure to include both! Do not just
present your data, but rather discuss the implications or significant findings based on the data.
(20 points)
• Proposed Policy Alternatives: What are some potential alternatives to the current policy based
on your research? Specifically, you should discuss the process through which each proposed
alternative policy might fix the problems with the current policy. You should include a minimum
of two potential policy alternatives. (10 points)
• Analyzing Policy Alternatives and Making a Policy Recommendation: In this section, you will
evaluate and analyze the proposed policy alternatives you discussed in the previous section and
ultimately make a recommendation on the best course of action. You should discuss the
strengths and weaknesses of each policy alternative and clearly state the criteria are you using
to evaluate these options. Weigh the costs and benefits of various options (based on these
criteria), building an argument for the “best” recommendation. You should support your
assertions with relevant data and avoid generalizations. You should also be sure to address
potential counterarguments and rebuttals to your findings and ultimate recommendation. The
key object of this section is to ultimately create a compelling argument for the option that you
have chosen as a recommendation from the presented alternatives. (25 points)
• Implementing Policy Recommendation: Clearly state how your policy recommendations should
be implemented and a timeframe for implementation. Be sure to provide specific and detailed
steps that need to be followed for the implementation of this policy; this requires you to
consider the key actors (agencies, leaders, executives, etc.) involved in the implementation.
Further, you should discuss the potential (intended or unintended) impact, both positive and
negative, of these recommendations on key constituents. (20 points)
• Conclusion: Provide a succinct and clear conclusion. Remind the reader of the “big picture” and
overall goal of your policy recommendations – answering the “so what?” question. In other
words, why is your proposed alternative better than the current policy and status quo? Why is it
important to make this change and why is the proposed timeframe appropriate and necessary?
(10 points)
Format of your policy memo/brief
While the length of policy memos/briefs may vary, since you are still acquiring the ability to write
succinctly, for the purpose of these classes your policy memos should be 2-3 pages in length (single
spaced). In addition, policy memos should be written with the reader in mind. They should be easy to
read and it should be easy to find important information. You may consider bold or italicized fonts,
clearly defined subsections, and/or bullets and lists to help the reader quickly and easily find key
information.
Additional Grading Information
This is a formal writing assignment and you are expected to write clearly and for a professional
audience. such, clarity and organization of writing, use of appropriate grammar, spelling, and
appropriate word choice and usage will be considered when grading your memos. Memos with such
mistakes may be penalized up to 10 points, depending on the severity of the problems.

The purpose of the third part of the comprehensive project is to use resources available to obtain industry averages for commonly used ratios. Additionally, you will compare company ratio results to industry averages.

  1. Obtain the four-digit primary SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) Code and industry title for your company. Record the primary SIC code and industry title at the top of the Ratio Analysis Worksheet.
  2. Obtain industry averages for commonly used ratios in the current period. Industry average information is reported by industry title or SIC code.
  3. Look up the following industry-average ratios:
    1. Current ratio
    2. Debt ratio
    3. Gross profit margin
    4. Times interest earned
    5. Accounts receivable turnover
    6. Inventory turnover
    7. Return on Sales
    8. Asset Turnover
    9. Return on Assets
    10. Financial Leverage
    11. Return on Equity

Note that some industry averages may not apply to your company.
Alternative to Industry Averages:
If you are not able to find the industry average for part 3 of your project, please consider the following:
Unfortunately, some of the websites where you can find industry averages will require you to pay for them. Instead of using industry average, calculate the same ratios for one of the competitors to the company you used in your project. That will give you the comparative information you need for Part 3 of the project. I believe this will help.

  1. Write a 3-5 page report comparing the above ratios to industry averages. Discuss whether your company’s profitability, efficiency, liquidity, and solvency are better than, or worse than, its peers. The report should be well written with cover page, introduction, body of paper (with appropriate subheadings), conclusion, and reference page. References must be appropriately cited. Format: Double-spaced, one-inch margins, using a 12-point Times New Roman font.
ENG 122 Summarizing Assignment Guidelines and Rubric Overview: When you use sources in your paper, you will need to either quote, paraphrase, or summarize the information. Summaries are used for longer passages; they provide a brief overview of the source using new and unique phrasing. Prompt: Summarize one of the following original texts using three to four sentences. Include a single in-text citation of your selected reading at the end of your summary.

 “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan (2006)  “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris (1999)  “Some Lessons From the Assembly Line” by Andrew Braaksma (2005)

Rubric Guidelines for Submission: Save your work in a Microsoft Word document with double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Then, check your writing for errors. Once you have proofread your document, submit it via the Assignment: Summarizing link in Brightspace.
