10. Gametes are diploid with double the number of chromosomes
III. Answer any four of the following ( each carries 1.5 mark)
1. Diagram and describe the eukaryotic cell cycle. Name the various phases, and briefly describe the events that occur during each.

LABEL THE PARTS FROM PRESENTATION OR TEXT
1. Eukaryotic cell cycle is divided into two major phases: interphase and cell division
2. Interphase is the stage where the cell acquires nutrients from its environment, grows and duplicates its chromosomes it contains three sub phases
G1_ a newly formed daughter cell enters this stage, and carries out activities like: it grows in size, specializes to perform specific function and it decides whether to divide or not, and enters the next phase
S-phase: DNA synthesis takes place via semiconservative replication
G2: cell grows some more and then synthesize the proteins needed for cell division.
Cell division: cell carries out either mitosis or meiosis’ in order to form new daughter cells
2. Explain the process of Mitosis.
Mitosis consists of nuclear division followed by cytoplasmic division.
Mitosis occurs in the following phases
1: Prophase is the first phase, duplicated chromosome condense, spindle microtubules form , chromosomes are captured by microtubules
2 : Metaphase – duplicated chromosome are connected to spindle fibers leading to opposite poles of the cell. Microtubules shorted and lengthen until each chromosome lines up along the equator of the cell
3: Anaphase- sister chromatids formed during S-phase separates becoming independent daughter chromosomes, one of the 2 daughter chromosomes from each original parental chromosomes move to each pole of the cell
4: telophase- spindle fibers disintegrate nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosome. The DNA revert to its original extended state, nucleoli begin to form
5: cytokinesis- microfilaments attached to membrane form a ring around the equator of the cell, constricts dividing the cell, in plants cell plate is formed forming 2 daughter cells
3. Compare the process of cytokinesis in plant cell and animal cell.
Cytokinesis in animal cells
a. Microfilaments attached to the plasma membrane form a ring around the equator of a cell . The ring contracts and constricts the cell’s equator
b. Eventually, contraction of the ring pinches off the membrane, forming two daughter cells, each with a nucleus identical with the other
c. Following cytokinesis, animal cells enter G1 of interphase, thus completing the cell cycle
Cytokinesis in plant cells
a. Stiff plant cell walls prevent the “pinching off” of cytokinesis seen in animal cells, which only have a plasma membrane
b. Instead, carbohydrate-filled vesicles assemble along the cell’s equator, between the daughter nuclei
c.The vesicles fuse into a continuous flattened sac, surrounded by plasma membrane and filled with sticky carbohydrates .This is called a cell plate
d. The plasma membranes of the plate fuse with the plasma membrane of the cell, forming two cells, with the carbohydrate in between becoming part of the cell wall
e. As in animals, plant cells enter G1 of interphase following cytokinesis, thus completing the cell cycle
4. Describe in humans the three categories of cells, based on their ability to divide and differentiate
1.Stem cells :
– have two important characteristics: self-renewal, and the ability to differentiate into a variety of cell types
-Stem cells self-renew because they retain the ability to divide, perhaps for the entire life of the organism
-Some stem cells in early embryos can produce any of the specialized cell types of the entire body
2.Other cells capable of dividing
-Some cells other than stem cells are capable of continuing to divide, but typically differentiate into only one or two different cell types
· Dividing liver cells, for example, can only become more liver cells
3. Permanently differentiated cells
· Permanently differentiated cells differentiate and never divide again
· For example, most heart and brain cells cannot divide
5. Complete the following table to compare mitosis and meiosis

mitosis Meiosis
a. Number of chromosomal duplications
b. Number of cell divisions
c. Number of daughter cells produced
d. Number of chromosomes in daughter cells
e. How chromosomes line up during metaphase
f. Genetic relationship of daughter cells to parent cells
g. functions performed in the human body

SECTION 1: Supporting the psychological wellbeing of hospitalised children. Whilst modern hospital environments aim to keep people safe during treatment, the experience of being hospitalized can increase anxiety, and for some, particularly children, can cause fear and distress which can have long lasting effects. Hospitalised children are often restricted in their ability to explore this strange environment, but have to adapt to the peculiar language and routines and due to their limits in cognitive functioning and ability to express their emotions, they are particularly vulnerable to stress (Rokach 2016). There are a number of strategies that can be implemented to reduce children’s confusion and fear whilst hospitalised, one of these is play. Question for Section 1:
 Discuss the evidence relating to the functions of play in the hospital as an intervention strategy to alleviate anxiety and fear in hospitalized children.
SECTION 2: Reducing the impact of preventable childhood illnesses
 With examples, discuss the significance of immunization as a crucial strategy that parents can take to protect their children against serious disease.
SECTION 3: Family centered care of the sick child: Sickle cell disease is a common genetic disease affecting children worldwide. Family education and teamwork are vital tools in effective management of pain during sickle cell crisis in children. Question for Section 3:
 Briefly discuss the key evidence based nursing intervention strategies used in supporting the child with sickle cell disease, and their family, to manage pain during sickle cell crisis.
Finally, it is important to say once again that although each section is quite short, you need to demonstrate the use of evidence from the literature to support your answers.

Arriving at a Course of Action – Collaboration

Overview

Collaborating with other professionals is at the heart of the multidisciplinary approach; it provides the ability to consider the client’s full situation from a variety of points of view, greatly increasing the chances of arriving at a productive, sustainable course of action. In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate your competence in doing just that.
In the case conceptualization in Unit 5, you engaged with a variety of professionals regarding your case client. Now, assume that you brought your case conceptualization to the table during the collaboration. In the media piece for your case, you heard and responded to each of your colleagues. In the previous unit, you shared a summary of your case in a discussion with your peers. Most likely the discussion offered you some additional insights that could be helpful in assisting your client.
For this assignment, factor in all that you know, including what you heard from your colleagues, to create a course of action for your client. Be sure to read the additional case information for your case located in the Resources.

Instructions

Write a paper of approximately 5–8 pages in which you accomplish the following for your case:

  • Case Summary (1 page): This is the case summary section of the case conceptualization assignment you completed in Unit 5. It would be a good idea to revise this section based on feedback received from your instructor in Unit 5.
  • In-depth Analysis (2 pages): Since you initially conceptualized the case in Unit 5, you received additional thoughts and perspectives about this case. In this section, synthesize, integrate, and analyze the additional points of view that you received through the collaborative process. What additional points were offered that you did not consider? How did you integrate the new information? Provide a rationale for the changes that you did or did not make based on the information that you gained, including the facts and what you consider to be the core issues for this client. This section should end with a clear identification of the list of needs or problems that should be addressed, with support for how you arrived at your conclusions.
  • Course of Action (1 page): Based on the issues and needs that you determined to be relevant, describe a course of action that you feel best addresses each area you identified. Include the best evidence that you can name to support your decisions and the course of action that you are recommending.
  • Recommendations (1 page): Provide recommendations to carry out your course of action that are specific, detailed, and consistent with best practices in the field. For the purpose of this assignment, if the resources you would recommend are not already mentioned in the case, you may fabricate details about resources that would reasonably be available in the community involved in your case.

Requirements

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
  • Number of resources: Your work should be supported by at least three additional references from the literature.
  • Length of paper: 5–8 typed double-spaced pages.
  • Font and font size: Arial, 10 point.

Your assignment is due at the end of this unit.

Musculoskeletal System Assessment Nursing Essay
Describe a patient with a musculoskeletal symptom or group of symptoms, such as joint pain, back pain, neck pain, and so on. Do not limit yourself to these examples. Remember: There are different types and locations of joint pain. What questions would you ask as part of your focused assessment? What history might be associated with the symptom, if any? What are the known risk factors for this condition? What physical examination techniques would you use? What patient education would you give the patient? Find a nursing journal article about these symptoms.

A NURSE IN A LOCAL PEDIATRIC PHYSICIAN’S MEDICAL GROUP.

Debbie Vestica decided to look for a new job on a day that should have been filled with joy. She had just completed a master’s degree in nursing and had been given a substantial increase in pay, along with new benefits. Other factors, however, greatly diminished the reward she had just received.Debbie began working as a nurse in a local pediatric physician’s medical group. Three doctors and three nurses made up the medical staff. Two of the nurses completed training at the licensed practical nurse (LPN) level, while Debbie held the rank of registered nurse(RN). Due to this difference in educational attainment, Debbie was expected to supervise the other two nurses. The problem she facedwas that the two nurses often treated her more as a peer, or even as a subordinate, rather than as a supervisor. To complicate matters, the two LPNs had been on staff for four and five years, respectively, while Debbie had only been employed by the organization for two years. Still, when hired, she was told to assume a supervisory role. At first, Debbie chose not to confront the two more experienced nurses, hoping that over time she would be able to manage them more effectively by not trying to use forceful nor directive tactics. One year later, Debbie discovered that although her pay was slightly above average for RNs in the area, her pay differential with the LPNs was only $3 per hour. She earned $30 per hour ($60,000 per year), whereas the LPNs earned $27 per hour ($54,000 per year).Their pay ranked them above nearly all LPNs in the state. Given the additional duties she was expected to complete, Debbie found thepay differential to be unsatisfactory. After two years on the job, Debbie began a master’s program designed to achieve thedesignation of clinical nurse specialist with an emphasis in children’s health. She devoted considerable time and money to obtaining the degree, although the physician’s group did contribute 50% of her tuition and book costs. On graduation day, Debbie met with the three physicians. They all generously praised her efforts and promised her a new status level that included having her own office in the complex. They also granted her a raise of $7 hour, raising her annual salary to $74,000, in return for additional duties and responsibilities. The turning point occurred when Debbie overheard the two LPNs talking in the office break room. Upon finding out about Debbie’s new pay raise and status, the LPNs confronted the three physicians, demanding an additional increase in pay as well. Sensing a major confrontation, the physicians had decided to raise the pay of the two by $5 per hour, to $32 per hour or $64,000 per year. That amount was higher than what Debbie had earned as an RN and as an RN attending graduate school Believing that she would never receive the proper pay differential that she deserved in this practice, Debbie decided it was time to seek employment elsewhere.Use Herzberg’s two-factor theory to explain Debbie’s level of motivation.Use Adams’s equity theory to explain Debbie’s decision to look for work elsewhere.Use Vroom’s expectancy theory to explain this situation. If you were advising the three physicians in the organization, what would you tell them they should have done when confronted by the two LPNs? Defend your advice.Your assignment must be one to two pages in length (excluding title and reference pages). Utilize your course textbook and at least one additional scholarly source to support your conclusions and responses to the questions. Your paper and all sources must be formatted according to APA style .
