ASSIGNMENT

In this written assignment, you will clarify your current beliefs about leadership in nursing and you will critically analyze the fit between your current beliefs and the literature. The 1st part is about your own values and beliefs, so it is very personal but then you need to situate it within the literature to demonstrate how you fit or do not fit with the literature.
The 2nd part is much broader and is about your ideal vision related to leadership in nursing as a profession.
The 3rd part is about what you think you yourself should be doing in order to live out your values/beliefs about leadership within the context of your vision for nursing. For example, as an educator who believes in the importance of facilitating a student’s growth might also talk a little about how the current systems constrain me from meeting my goals.
Remember to relate all of your reflections to the literature, even though you will be writing about your personal beliefs and so on. It is expected that you use the literature from course materials, but additional new material should also be sought.

Your personal paper about leadership should be no more than 5 typed pages double-spaced (excluding cover sheet and references) and must follow APA format, including a cover page and judicious use of headings. Please become familiar with the APA materials that I have posted on Moodle and use them to ensure you follow correct APA style. The APA folder within the Introduction folder even contains an example cover page and first page that you could use as the template for how to format your assignment. The references within this course are in APA
format and I recommend you use them as your template for references. I prefer that you single space your references, similar to the format in this course outline, as it saves space and pages.
Depth of analysis is essential, so be careful to explore each area. Your grade will reflect the extent to which you meet the following criteria:
Level of critical reflection in how you describe your values and beliefs related to leadership in nursing, i.e., what is important to you when nursing with persons you are leading, and relate to the literature

At the CVICU I work in at Memorial Regional there is no exception from changing the equipment like the IV pumps to updating insulin protocols to remain current with new therapies there always seems to be resistance and trouble unifying the team at first.Guo Hao Liu and Zhou (2016) conducted a study on Nurses in several different specialties with varying levels of education and noticed a trend of increased compliance with evidence based practice in those nurses with higher levels of education experience with research and job satisfaction. I think this supports the trend of our nursing boards to increase the levels of education required to practice examples including their promotion of BSN only programs and as you discussed in class this week the transition of the MSN programs to the Doctorate level. The more educated one is and the more experience they have in the viewing the process behind what puts these new treatment modalities in effect then the more respect they have for the research itself and the information it provides.In my unit specifically there had been an issue one of our respiratory therapist had seen in administering breathing treatments such as albuterol to patients without a significant respiratory history. This protocol was formed by the surgeons and intensivists through their experience and research. The problem was addressed by involving these decision makers to educate the staff on their reasons in a non-confrontational and educational manner which allowed the respiratory therapists a chance to understand and buy into the programThis article and experience illustrates that this method of providing education instead of simply implementing new protocols may promote a positive outlook on evidence based decision making. Education and research should be presented to employees and the process explained so it can aid its acceptance and compliance.

As a nurse, you can have a great impact on the success or failure of the adoption of EHRs. It is important for nurses to understand their role as change agents and the ways they can influence others when addressing the challenges of changing to a drastically different way of doing things. Everett Rogers, a pioneer in the field of the diffusion of innovations, identified five qualities that determine individual attitudes towards adopting new technology (2003). He theorized that individuals are concerned with:
1. Relative advantage: The individual adopting the new innovation must see how it will be an improvement over the old way of doing things. 2. Compatibility with existing values and practices: The adopter must understand how the new innovation aligns with current practices. 3. Simplicity: The adopter must believe he or she can easily master the new technology; the more difficult learning the new system appears, the greater the resistance that will occur. 4. Trialability: The adopter should have the opportunity to “play around’ with the new technology and explore its capabilities. 5. Observable results: The adopter must have evidence that the proposed innovation has been successful in other situations.
For this Assignment, you assume the role of a nurse facilitator in a small hospital in upstate New York. You have been part of a team preparing for the implementation of a new electronic health records system. Decisions as to the program that will be used have been finalized, and you are now tasked with preparing the nurses for the new system. There has been an undercurrent of resistance expressed by nurses, and you must respond to their concerns.
