Self-Help Evaluation
ThIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT ASSIGNMENT
The self-help movement has swept the world of substance abuse treatment. A new client may not be aware of any treatment options open to them aside from those of self-help group meetings, such as Alcoholics Anonymous. While self-help groups are not a solution for every client, they have been shown to be useful in some cases.
As future substance abuse counselors, it is important that you explore and be aware of the different self-help groups and what goes on in these group meetings.
Begin this assignment by doing the following:
Attend a self-help group related to substance abuse. There are multiple options including AA Open Meetings, Al-Anon, Women for Sobriety, and so forth. Information is easily accessible on the Internet. Note that some meetings are closed while others are open. At Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), most weekly groups are closed; however, open meetings are held primarily on weekends when all are welcome to attend.
Information for your area can be obtained through “AA Intergroup” at http://aa-intergroup.org/.
Introduce yourself and let folks know that you are a student. Remember to follow the guidelines of confidentiality.
If you are unable to access a twelve-step group because one is not available in your area, either research an online self-help group or research the implications of self-help groups in general including their strengths and weaknesses.
Write a paper about your experience and make sure you cover the following:
- Evaluate the self-help group you attended and/or researched. Critique the strengths and weaknesses of self-help groups in terms of their value in the treatment of substance abuse.
- Hypothesize what types of clients would be a good match for the group that you attended and/or researched. What types of clients would not be a good match? Consider age, gender, culture, race, sexuality, religion/spirituality, and the severity of substance abuse. Include other evaluation criteria for differential treatment. Explain your reasoning.
- Predict how self-help groups are evolving over time. How can technology be used to supplement and/or replace face-to-face support groups?
- Appraise the effect on the group experience when involuntary clients are present. Include the effect to treatment, counseling, and collaboration.
- Recommend several ways to overcome resistance. How may technology be used to overcome resistance to treatment? Include collaboration issues involved in the treatment of involuntary clients using technology.
Write a paper in Word format and make sure you include a title page and reference page in addition to the 6–8-pages of content. Apply APA 6th edition standards to the format of the paper, and the citation of sources.
Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M5_A1.doc.
By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.
Review the detailed grading rubric.

The subjects of retirement and health insurance are much in the news these days. Discuss your plans for retirement with a special emphasis on income after retirement and health insurance. After a lifetime of paying Social Security and Medicare taxes in every payroll check, your grandparents and parents are counting on having Social Security and Medicare to help with the inevitable loss of income occuring at retirement.
Things may be different for your generation. Many are discussing privatizing Social Security and doing away with Medicare. Even Republican voters in the State of Florida are opposed to this plan. Read the report on a survey of Republican Primary Voters who objected 2:1 to plans to change these benefits (among Hispanic voters, opposition was even stronger with 4:1 voters opposing changes). Given what you know of the volatilty of the stock markets that are up one day and down drastically another, would you risk your retirement to the stock market? Would you risk your health on having the ability to pay for private health insurance when you retire?
Despite what you’ve heard, Social Security and Medicare can be saved. The generation entering the workforce today (The Millenials) are an even larger generation than the retiring Baby Boomer generation. As long as as many or more are paying into the system than those who are retiring, the programs can and should be saved. You never know how your life will turn out and it is essential to have a basic retirement cushion to live on. Moreover, it is your money after all. You have paid into both Social Security and Medicare with every paycheck since you started working.
What can you do now to help save Social Security and Medicare? Some believe it is essential to send politicians to Washington and Tallahassee who will protect those benefits. But it is not enough to save these benefits. What can you do to guarantee a comfortable retirement and good medical care in your old age?

Suppose we wanted to know whether people tend to marry those who have interests and values that are different from their own (opposites) or whether they tend to marry those with similar interests and values (birds of a feather). How might we find out? As you create your discussion post, consider the following:
What are the steps involved in conducting research?
How do we determine what type of research is suitable for a particular problem?
What type of research would be useful in this case?
How would we go about doing it?
Propose a simple research project that would allow you to answer the question: Which of the two statements in quotation marks above applies best to selection of marriage partners in the United States? Choose one of the research methods listed in Module 4 that you think would be the most useful and practical for exploring this question. Explain why this method would be appropriate. Describe in some detail the steps that you would take in setting up and carrying out this research.
The assignemnt is:
Using information from your text, videos, and learning activities (and your own thoughts) addressing the following scenario in words (4-5 pages): IMAGINE THAT your best friend comes to you for an informal opinion about some unusual symptoms he/she has been experiencing. Choose a disorder for him/her to experience that we have covered in the course. Describe the symptoms of the disorder and the treatment advice you believe is most valid, including the theoretical model. Better papers will include a thorough description of (a) relevant diagnostic criteria, (b) your friend’s human experience with the disorder, (c) the theoretical model recommended (the one you think is best and why – e.g., cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, biological, a combination of models you think are appropriate), and (d) a reflection of your changing views of mental health function and dysfunction as a result of what you have learned in the course. Grading criteria for this option are as follows:
Describe your friend’s human experience with the disorder. How does it manifest itself in their life? What effects does it have on their life? 25 points
Incorporate the relevant diagnostic criteria of the particular disorder chosen and be sure to tie it into the friend’s personal experience you describe. 25 points
Treatment advice you would suggest to your friend and the theoretical model that is tied to this treatment. Why do you think this is the best treatment/model? 20 points
Reflect on your changing views of mental health function and dysfunction as a result of course material. Have your views changed or not? What has changed and why? 20 points
The paper should be typed, double-spaced and 4-5 pages in length. 5 points
Structure (flow of paper; 5 points) and Mechanics (spelling, grammar, etc) 5 points}
