Case Study 3.2 Project Selection at Nova Western, Inc.
This case presents an example that is common, in which different screening methods may yield different findings.  In this case, two projects are competing for funding; Project Janus, championed by the organization’s Software Development group and Project Gemini, which as the backing of their Business Applications organization.  Using a weighted scoring model, it appears that Project Gemini offers the best alternative in terms of the criteria employed.  On the other hand, when a Discounted Cash Flow approach is used, the results suggest that Project Janus will earn greater returns on initial investment.  Instructors can use this case to illustrate the fact that many times, selection models will point to conflicting results, particularly when financial models are paired with non-financial approaches.
Instructors can fashion a debate from this case, in which they assign one team to serve as champions for Project Janus and the other for Project Gemini.  It serves as a valuable exercise for requiring students to commit to one approach or another, defend their positions, and also examine these competing models for their strengths and weaknesses.

Case Study 4.2—Finding the Emotional Intelligence to Be a Real Leader
As the title suggests, this case is about the concept of emotional intelligence and its role in effective leadership.  Kathy was a competent project manager who had been successful in the past, in other settings, but was failing badly in her first effort as head of a large, international project.  Her inability to understand her team’s sensibilities and her own domineering style are combining to create a highly negative team environment.  The nature of emotional intelligence is identified by possessing: (1) self-awareness, (2) self-regulation, (3) motivation, (4) empathy, and (5) social skill.  In this case, it appears that Kathy, though possessing strong motivation and, to some degree, self-regulation, is singularly lacking in empathy and social skills.  Further, it could be argued that she is doing a poor job with self-awareness as well, as she does not understand how her own behaviors contributed to these problems.
Questions
1. Discuss how Kathy lacked sufficient emotional intelligence to be effective in her new project manager assignment.
2. Of the various dimensions of emotional intelligence, which dimension(s) did she appear to lack most?  What evidence can you cite to support this contention?

Final Project: Document redesign in plain language  
The first thing you need to do is read three chapters on usability studies. There is a lot of repetition across the chapters. “Chapter 8 Evaluating the Complete User Experience: Dimensions of Usability” is by Roger A. Grice and a broad introduction to important concepts in usability studies. “Chapter 9 Ensuring Usability” is from a book by Rebecca Burnett. The copy is unfortunately hard to read in parts but the chapter is rich and in any case it contains more than you need to know. “Chapter 13 Reviewing, Evaluating, and Testing Documents and Websites” is found in the technical communication textbook that is linked on the left menu in Blackboard.
The next thing you need to do is to find a document to work with. Take some time on this. I do not recommend that you gravitate to the first thing that comes your way. Consider different possibilities, and if you think it will help, post your thoughts in Discussions and seek feedback from your classmates. I have not set up a forum for this conversation. You can post in “Questions about the course” or to Blackboard Messages if you so choose.
The third thing you need to do is avoid panic. If you try to jump right in and start thinking about this project in terms of the readability and usability tests below you risk cognitive overload. Take this project one step at a time. This is a big assignment but it is not as scary as it may at first seem. The project is broken down in stages, and you are the one who is in charge of each stage.
So, after deciding on a document in conversation with me and maybe your classmates, you will develop an evaluation test plan using the table below as a guide. Chapter 9 in Burnett can help you fill out various parts of the plan. Delete items that do not apply.

Document and dates
I have a Word version of the evaluation plan that I will post or send to you as your ideas develop. For now, look for documents to use for this assignment. They need to have some substance and a usability element to them. A flyer is not enough. A technical manual written for specialists is too much, especially if the content is not meant to be understood by non-specialists.

In Units II, IV, and V, you contributed to the Personal Leadership Training Plan and focused on attributes, knowledge, and skills. In this unit, you will add experience to your plan.

Within your presentation, respond to the following points:

Paying Attention Pays off for Andra Rush
Paying attention has been a key for Andra Rush. As a nursing school graduate she was paying attention when other nurses complained about unfair treatment and decided she wanted to do something about it—so she enrolled in the University of Michigan’s MBA program so she could do something about how employees were treated. As she completed her business courses and continued to work as a nurse, she was paying attention when a patient described his experience in the transport business. The business sounded intriguing, and so, with minimal experience and minimal resources, Rush took a risk and started her own trucking business. She scraped together the funds to buy three trucks by borrowing money from family and using her credit cards. She specialized in emergency shipping and accepted every job that came her way, even if it meant driving the trucks herself. She answered phones, balanced her books, and even repaired the trucks. She paid attention to her customers and made a point of exceeding their expectations regardless of the circumstances. When the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, shut down local bridges, Rush rented a barge to make sure a crucial shipment for DaimlerChrysler made it to its destination on time.
Rush continues to pay attention and credits her listening skills as a major reason for her success. Rush is distinct in the traditionally white male–dominated trucking industry—a woman and a minority (Rush is Native American) who credits her heritage and the “enormous strength” of her Mohawk grandmother for helping her prevail:
It is entirely possible that my Native spirit, communicated to me by my grandmother and my immediate family, have enabled me to overcome the isolation, historical prejudice, and business environment viewed as a barrier to Native- and woman-owned businesses. The willingness to listen, to understand first, and act directly and honestly with integrity is a lesson and code of conduct my elders have bequeathed to me. Being an entrepreneur has reinforced those lessons again and again.
Her Mohawk heritage is pervasive. Rush’s company logo is a war staff with six feathers representing the Six Nations of the Iroquois: Mohawk, Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Tuscarora, and Seneca. She believes in the power of a diverse workforce; as a result more than half of the 390 employees at Rush Trucking are women, and half are minorities.
Rush keeps close tabs on her company and its employees. Though the company has grown from its humble three-truck beginning to a fleet of 1,700 trucks, Rush still takes time to ride along with drivers. She has provided educational programs like “The Readers’ Edge,” a literacy program, to improve the skills and lives of her employees. Rush is actively involved in several organizations that work to improve the position of minorities—she’s on the boards of directors of the Michigan Minority Business Development Council, the Minority Enterprise Development/ Minority Business Development Agency, and the Minority Business Roundtable, and she has served as president of the Native American Business Alliance.

The concept behind the triple bottom line is that companies are responsible to all their stakeholders. This includes everyone involved with the company, whether directly or indirectly. It also includes the planet on which we all live. This approach views shareholders as very important stakeholders. This approach also recognizes the need for companies to consider other important stakeholders in the company, including employees, customers, vendors, and the larger community.

    Assignment Steps
    a. Review the instructor’s feedback and update your paper. Add the following new content.
    b. Research Variables. Identify one or two variables that could be used for data collection. Three examples.
