Question 3
A hospital is an acute care short-term stay and emergency medical center that also includes medical
departments such as, surgical, obstetrics, infectious disease, radiology, laboratory and mental health.
How would you determine which skills, certifications, and licensur
e would be effective in retaining the
current nurses?
Is there a direct correlation between additional skills and retention and motivation of the nurses?
How would you determine who would be provided the skills development? Are all skills for all nurses
feasible?
You are the administrator of a medium-sized hospital. The Director of Human Resources has been
summoned to an executive team meeting in an effort determine why an unusual number of nursing staff
leaving for other employment. During the discussions, the Director of Nursing provides her thoughts re

garding why the nurses may be less productive and why some are departing. She states that the primary
reason is salaries/benefits. A charge nurse thinks the reason might be working conditions, especially
involving patient load in the various nursing units. Overall morale is low
, which is adversely affecting pro

ductivity. This has also resulted in some patient quality outcomes discovered by the Continuous Quality
Improvement team.
During the discussion, the Senior Director of Admissions shares some experiences she had with a for

mer employer–that the nursing staff tended to remain longer with the employer based on good working
conditions, specifically in the area of learning new skills, obtaining additional certifications, licensure, and
cross-training for other areas not usually assigned. She feels that these measures result in higher reten

tion and patient quality outcomes.
After the meeting, you meet with the Director of Nursing and Human Resources Director, who is also in
charge of all training and development for the hospital. As the administrator
, you consider developing
a small group to explore the feasibility of providing more skills development and training to your current
nursing staff. Before implementing this directive, consider the following:

How would you determine if additional compensation would be required for trained nurses?
How would you quantitatively determine the cost of this initiative?

Question Description

The purpose of this Assignment is to explore how a theorist explicates his or her philosophy and thoughts behind a theoretical field. As in other fields of study, nursing has a plethora of theorists and theories. These theorists have developed their paradigm over time enriching it with research and dialogue with other theorists.

Directions

You are going to explore how a theorist of your choice created his or her theory. Did it develop as an acorn becoming a mighty oak over the decades? Did it arrive as a burst of light like the big bang as some believe created our universe? Was it developed from a blueprint like a spaceship where thousands of scholars worked together to create a rocket to the moon? In point of fact, how is a theory developed? This is what we are exploring.

You will pick a theorist who interests you, it does not have to be a nurse theorist. You may also choose from other disciplines such as: behavioral, leadership, business, education, technology.

You will become the theorist immersing yourself in the writings from the earliest mentioned to the most current.

As you read, look at how you (taking on the persona of the theorist) developed the theory.

In the first stage, theorizing occurs. This is where you, as the theorist, identify the concepts of what nursing is and is not. Perhaps you questioned what concepts were guiding those in nursing practice and then started to question your role. You started asking yourself, “Where am I in nursing, and where the profession is going? Is there some overarching concept that guides the professional in his or her practice?” This is where you recognize that a theory is needed.

In the second stage, syntax is developed. This is where you will define the terms. Look for changing definitions of terms. Consider, for example, Jean Watson. She starts by defining the word “caring.” Within the last ten years she has refined her terminology changing the term caring to caritas. This demonstrates a growth and maturation from decades of research she and other scholars did to produce the theory of caring.

The third stage is theory testing. Defined as the phenomena behind the theory that are exposed through research. The definitions of terms are refined. The theorists and other researchers consider whether this theory helps answer questions that arise in practice. This is where your theory is used in by a widening group of researchers. For example, graduate nursing students request the tool you developed while testing your theory.

The fourth and last stage is evaluation. This is where philosophical debate occurs as the concepts are applied through evidenced based practice in the act of providing nursing care.

Assignment Details

For this Assignment, you are going to write an article for a nursing journal explaining how you developed your theory through the four stages (theorizing, syntax, theory testing, and evaluation). Your paper must be 3 to 5 pages, not including the title and reference pages.

To view the Grading Rubric for this Assignment, please visit the Grading Rubrics section of the Course Home.

Assignment Requirements

Before finalizing your work, you should:

  • be sure to read the Assignment description carefully (as displayed above);
  • consult the Grading Rubric (under the Course Home) to make sure you have included everything necessary; and
  • utilize spelling and grammar check to minimize errors.

Your writing Assignment should:

  • follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.);
  • be well orderedlogical, and unified, as well as original and insightful;
  • display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics; and
  • use APA 6th Edition format.
You will include your overall strategy in the ACF negotiation towards your position and what flows you will find acceptable and unacceptable.  Please see the examples in Module 12 Supplemental section to guide you and give you inspiration.  You do not have to be verbose or poetic in words, but this document will serve as your own guide to further negotiations.  Please provide references where possible since other negotiators will ask you about your numbers anyway.
In addition, please provide two control panels (use the Contract spreadsheet, not the huge calculation one) to show two different flow sets.  The first set of flows and reservoir operations should give you the BEST situation for your group.  The second control panel should give the LEAST ACCEPTABLE situation for your group.  That is, this deal is what you would still accept, but only barely…  It is like buying a used car.. you would LOVE to pay Zero or 5 bucks (the Best situation…),  but… if push came to shove you would pay up to $3500 bucks  (Least Acceptable level).
My intent is that you know what flow and reservoir conditions will give you (and your constituency) the best results and minimally good results.  Thus, it should help you to identify good deals and alterations that benefit your group.  Because when you will be negotiating with 9 other people (with some people on your side and others diametrically opposed to you), you need to know what is a good deal for you and what is not.  Else, you will be taken for a ride and your negotiating grade (Phase II) will suffer significantly.
Please attached a Word or PDF file, along with the control panels of your BEST and LEAST ACCEPTABLE DEALS.  Also please give me some sentences on why each of the two deals are good for your negotiating position….  Remember to alter BOTH the reservoir management settings (the level and release) as well as the consumptive demands.
This time, you are designing a PowerPoint (or comparable program of your choice) presentation about the policy solutions used in your country. Many of you will choose to do the same country as you did for your first assignment, but some of you may decide to switch, and that’s OK, although it may involve a little more work in terms of getting up and running.
Please see the attached document for more details, as well as a sample presentation from an assignment from a different class (I often have students do a nonverbal presentation in each class I teach so they can practice another way of communicating beyond writing a paper).
Finally, I have attached the rubric I use to guide me in assessing your work. Like your papers, I am interested in how you are doing at mastering the skills of organization, content, writing/presentation, and overall quality of the answer. Thus, the way in which you answer the assigned question is different, but the skills you need to develop remain constant.

Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy Overview You are required to submit a scholarly paper in which you will identify, describe, research, and apply the concepts that underlie your personal philosophy for professional nurse Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy

OverviewYou are required to submit a scholarly paper in which you will identify, describe, research, and apply the concepts that underlie your personal philosophy for professional nursing practice. This will help you identify your own values and beliefs about the established metaparadigms and metatheories of the discipline. It will also help you identify and articulate concepts relevant to your specific practice. This paper is intended to be an exercise in clarification and organization of your professional foundation. You are also required to provide a list of assumptions from personal nursing practice that illustrate the concepts and framework of your theory.

Your paper should follow a format that includes:

Nursing Autobiography: A brief (1 page) discussion of your background in nursing.
The Four Metaparadigms: Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on the basic four metaparadigms/concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment.
Two Practice-Specific Concepts: Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on at least two other concepts specific to your own practice.
List of Propositions: A numbered list of at least five propositions or assumption statements that clearly connect the concepts described.
Each week, you will complete various segments of your Concept Synthesis Paper and submit it to the W1: Assignment 3 Dropbox for facilitator feedback when necessary. Your paper should integrate these discrete elements and reflect your personal nursing philosophy.

Your Concept Synthesis Paper on your Personal Nursing Philosophy is due in Week 3. However, it is recommended that you begin working on your paper from Week 1 onwards and complete the various components related to the paper week wise as you progress through the course. The suggested tasks for each week are:

Week 1: Nursing Biography and The Four Metaparadigms of Nursing
Week 2: Two Practice-specific Concepts, and List of Propositions/Assumptions
Week 3: Due: Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy

Consider the following questions as you complete your various tasks related to this assignment.

1.

How do I define and employ the four basic metaparadigms of nursing theory in my professional practice?

2.

What are the major concepts I employ that are unique to my professional practice?

3.

What philosophies and theories from the literature of nursing and other disciplines/domains are consistent with these concepts?

4.

How are the concepts of transcultural nursing, the health promotion model, skill acquisition, role theory, and change theory specifically integrated into my philosophy and practice?

5.

What research supports these theories and concepts?

6.

How do I integrate role and change theory into my professional practice and how may these theories be applied to the organization in which I practice?

The paper is to be thoroughly researched and well documented, with relevant material from the nursing theorists presented incorporated into the paper. Use the current edition of the APA Manual throughout the paper. Sources should focus on references from nursing theory but may also include conceptual and theoretical material from other professional domains. The paper, excluding references or appendices, is to be limited to 6-10 pages. Writing should be succinct and well organized, as it is impossible for the facilitator to evaluate form and content separately.

Your philosophy/framework is to be given a title that is appropriate to its content and emphasis.

What are some factors that make some people healthy and others ill? Healthy People 2020 identifies five determinants of health that influence the health of individuals and populations. Healthy People 2020 describes them as “a range of personal, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health status” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2014, About Determinants of Health, para. 1). Determinants fall into five categories including: (a) policy making, (b) social factors, (c) health services, (d) individual behavior, and (e) biology and genetics.

DRAFT 1 – Rhetorical Analysis of a Debate on an ISSUE (2+ sources)

Your goal in this assignment is to understand conflict or debate from multiple viewpoints through navigating at least two sources that disagree on some ISSUE. You have TWO OPTIONS for your focus in this Project 3:
1. Option 1: Focus on an ISSUE related to the community you studied in Project 2 (e.g., abusive language in gaming; devaluing Arabic in English language schools, etc.); OR
2. Option 2: Choose an entirely new ISSUE related to some aspect of your life that you are concerned about and that has relevance to you.
Identifying Issues
An issue can be defined as some problem that people in a community do not agree about, something that causes conflict and/or debate about what to do to solve the problem. When you explore issues, be sure to focus on issues that are directly relevant to you and your life. If you choose an issue such as “global warming,” how will YOU say anything new or different from what has already been said by experts? You need to choose an issue that YOU can contribute something to, so think about all the different problems and issues that you confront everyday or you read about in local social media and news sites.

Identifying (at least) TWO Sources That Disagree on Your Issue

Next, read, annotate, reread, analyze, and evaluate your two (or more) sources in order to find what they disagree upon. You’re looking for different claims, evidence, data, methodologies, or impacts of the previous research. Once you find this disagreement between your sources, look for a gap, or a space that needs to be filled through additional research.

Composing Your First Draft (Rhetorical Analysis of Sources)

Using the rhetorical strategies (logos, ethos, pathos) ANALYZE the two (or more) sources you’ve selected.
First, you’ll need to briefly SUMMARIZE each source. What is the MAIN point of each source? What is discussed? What additional important points are included. If someone asked what this source “says” about the issue, what would you say? Avoid saying “it talks about . . .”! Use verbs like reports, discusses, examines, identifies, reveals, details, etc. Avoid including specific details or data. Focus on MAIN points and supporting points.
Then, you’ll ANALYZE each source: HOW does the author/writer, publication (where it’s published), date (published), audience, and purpose possibly affect the information contained in this piece? HOW do you determine what its primary purpose is? (to inform, to persuade, etc.)? HOW do the specific kinds of information presented in this text create a particular perspective or angle? Examine how the organization of the piece – the people or perspectives focused on, the people/perspectives not present, the facts/statistics used and the sources for those facts/statistics – might shape the audience’s understanding of the content. HOW (be specific) do you know whether the information is reliable and/or credible? HOW do you determine whether this text is intended to be objective? Or, if it is not intended to be objective, how do you know? Remember that even if it is objective, the piece may present a particular “slant” or “perspective.” It may be useful to think in terms of ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS. In what specific ways does the author use these rhetorical appeals in her/his presentation of information?
Finally, decide how primary research (from your previous project 2 or from your own experience, observations, interviews with people) may either add to previous research or respond to ideas in the sources. Write a research introduction (1-2 paragraphs) using the CARS model. You should cite your sources according to a particular academic style, such as APA, MLA, or a citation style used in engineering, such as IEEE.
