Assignment 1: Sociocultural Norms, Health, and Nursing.  The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered.  Post a response to one of the two discussion topics below, using information from the lectures, reading assignments, library resources, and Internet resources. All responses should be posted to the appropriate topic in the Discussion Area.

Topic 1: Vulnerable Populations  As you discovered in this week’s lectures and textbook readings, numerous vulnerable populations exist in the community. Identify three local organizations in your community that deliver healthcare services to vulnerable populations. Based on your research findings, answer the following:

•Which population does each organization serve?

•What services does it provide?

•Where does it get its funding (local, state, or federal sources)?

•Evaluate the relative value of each organization’s services to individuals and families in the vulnerable population it serves.

Topic 2: Stigma Associated with Disease  Some vulnerable populations may have diseases, health impairments, and pregnancy that bring humiliation and predisposed judgment. Unfortunately, these health conditions can cause vulnerable populations to become ostracized by the general public.

•What ways would you choose to function as an advocate for vulnerable populations?

•Discuss the types of assistance you might provide to each of the following clients: ◦A 24-year-old pregnant woman who is currently homeless and unmarried ◦A 16-year-old girl who has run away from her foster home and who has an IV drug habit ◦An immigrant worker whose TB skin test just came back positive ◦An employed, married man who contracted Hepatitis B through a blood transfusion 30 years ago  Citations should conform to APA guidelines.  Part 1 – Contract Clauses  !!!!(SEE ATTACHMENTS FOR PART 1)!!!!
1. For the City of RPV, City of Bellevue, and Excerpts from a Typical Construction Contract:
Determine the standard of care (SOC) required by each contract.  Identify the section of the contract that defines the SOC. Is this standard of care heightened as compared to the ordinary professional standard of care?  Explain your response.
2. Identify the section(s) of the Bellevue Youth Center Expansion Professional Services Agreement that deal with the following contract terms and conditions and prepare an explanation on your understanding if this clause as written would be acceptable or unacceptable and why:

  1. Scope Changes
  2. Contract Termination
  3. Legal Action
  4. Personnel
  5. Negligence/Indemnification

————————————————————————-
Part 2 – In-Class Exercise Preparation
Read the scenario below and then study the contract.
You are the CEO for Inland Architects. You firm is well established in Southern California and has a reputation as providing high quality work.  Your rates reflect this high quality; they’re above the average rate in the area but they’re not exorbitant.
This is your first significant opportunity to work for a major telecom company.  You would really like to close this deal.  You believe that this contract could be a stepping stone to other lucrative telecom work.  You’ve heard Big Corp is a tough negotiator and seldom gives much on their end of negotiations.  You’re willing to accept more risk than you normally would to get this opportunity, but you’ll walk if Big Corp comes in and says “Take it or leave it,” you’ll leave it.  You’re not going to sign a bad contract just to get the work.
You’ve decided to focus on your top 3 to 4 concerns.  If you can get some movement from Big Corp on these concerns, you can make this contract work.  Bottom-line:  you don’t have to have it all your way, but you won’t mortgage the farm for this contract.
Read the contract and identify the 3 to 4 areas in which you most want changes from Big Corp.  For each area decide what changes would make the contract acceptable to you.  Come with written notes, or you won’t be effective in the negotiations.
1.      What clauses in the contracts deal with standard of care?  Is the required standard of care stated in the contract greater than the ordinary professional standard of care? Which statements from the contract support your view?
2.      If you were representing Inland Architects, would you sign this contract as written?  If not what paragraphs would you object to?
3.      For each paragraph you identified in (2), explain how much you would give up at the Big Corp representative in order to reach an agreement with Inland Architects.

short answer.

To best understand the concepts of ethics, define the following terms:
Utilitarianism, Egoism, Relativism, and Absolutism and  write a hypothetical situation where each of the defined terms above is utilized.
Utilitarianism is a theory that focuses on the overall happiness of many. It encourages nurses to adopt actions that promote positive outcomes in healthcare (Baragona, 2016). Therefore nurses work towards minimizing the actions that prejudice the interest of the patients. A nurse working at an emergency setup will give care to a patient who has high chances of survival based on the severity of the injury.
Ethical egoism postulates that people act in furtherance of their self-interest about morality. Therefore, a nurse will push to get a study leave even if the department faces a shortage because they focus on achieving a certain goal based on their self-interest (Meyers, 2018). Relativist ideology argues that healthcare providers should offer passionate care to those professing morals and beliefs contrary to their own (Baragona, 2016). For instance, a nurse should take care of a female who has secured illegal abortion and is bleeding profusely despite believing that abortion is morally wrong.
Absolutism theorists postulate that God-given laws are the absolute truth. Nurses prescribing to this line of thought use the immutable truth to decide (Baragona, 2016). In the discussions regarding euthanasia, they do not agree to undertake procedures leading to a patient’s death because the holy scriptures prohibit them.

Over 60% of the patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York City were men. Researchers have speculated that women’s more robust immune system might put them at a lower risk and that biological factors drive men’s disadvantage to some extent. However, there are likely additional social factors that have contributed to men’s greater risk. Draw on at least two course materials assigned this week to speculate what social factors and gendered expectations might be contributing to men’s worse outcomes from COVID-19. A complete answer will clearly distinguish between sex and gender. Give specific examples whenever possible. Your answer should be between 450 and 550 words.

The reflection is personal and should address and include certain sections as discussed below. It is NOT A SUMMARY of each the chapters or lectures.
Length:
Your reflection should be 4-5 pages in length double spaced 12 point font.
Structure:
Your reflection should have a title, a brief introduction, all 3 sections listed and explained below (personal application reflection, class content reflection, and online class format/structure reflection) and a conclusion. Additional content of personal experience is welcome although not required.
Personal application reflection: this section should introduce and briefly explain one, two or three concepts from the chapter/s (e.g. ethnocentrism; high context; cultural shock…) this should not be more than half of a page in length at most. After you introduce the concept, you analyze it looking into how you may have seen it in your life and how; you should provide concrete examples from your life or that of other people close to you (e.g. gender roles, as I was growing up I was taught that…). If you disagree with the certain concept (e.g. the chapter says that Greek culture is high context in general and you disagree) you may provide arguments why you disagree. Please note that the sample personal application reflection is provided on blackboard and is a sample for content and not length nor in covers all required sections. Make sure that your transition between the concepts you choose to reflect on and discuss is smooth.
Class content reflection: in this section you will focus on the material discussed in class e.g. the lectures, chapters and text, video links, activities and self-assessments, guest speaker recorded lecture, discussion boards, speakers and topics for extra credit opportunities…etc. In this section you will write your own assessment of all or some of these.
Online class format/structure reflection: in this section please focus on the format of the class; you may discuss what worked for you? What did not work? What you liked and what you wished was different. While we all may have preferred the class to be face to face and you may mention this if you like, please focus in this section on the class’ online format itself.
Other: you surly can add anything that you would like to share which you may not have mentioned in the other sections.
Conclusion: Please conclude with a brief paragraph assessing your overall experience in this class.

As demands on the U.S. public health system continue to increase, more quality improvement strategies are needed to support the system and improve outcomes. Public health agencies, like leaders in other industries, are developing quality improvement approaches for application in public health settings. Bringing together local, state and national healthcare practitioners and other stakeholders in quality improvement and quality assurance efforts has yielded several best practices and lessons for public health stakeholders. However, more work is needed if quality improvement is to become standard practice in public health.
Instructions
In this assignment you will read the article “Quality Improvement in Public Health: Lessons Learned from a Multi-State Learning Collaborative.” You will list the major concepts within the article and explain the positive outcomes in the two case studies. Further explore the how quality improvement programs could be systematically used in public health systems and explain the goals, values, and vision that should be considered in implementing such programs. Finally, consider the future, after such programs have been created and findings have been determined. How would ensure that the findings are implemented and followed in public health and public health policy in the future? This paper should be at least 1000 words in length. The paper has at least three references. Your writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful. All sources used should be properly cited using APA formatting.

While this weeks topic highlighted the uncertainty of Big Data, the author identified the following as areas for future research.  Pick one of the following for your Research paper:

  • Additional study must be performed on the interactions between each big data characteristic, as they do not exist separately but naturally interact in the real world.
  • The scalability and efficacy of existing analytics techniques being applied to big data must be empirically examined.
  • New techniques and algorithms must be developed in ML and NLP to handle the real-time needs for decisions made based on enormous amounts of data.
  • More work is necessary on how to efficiently model uncertainty in ML and NLP, as well as how to represent uncertainty resulting from big data analytics.
  • Since the CI algorithms are able to find an approximate solution within a reasonable time, they have been used to tackle ML problems and uncertainty challenges in data analytics and process in recent years.

Paper should meet these requirements:

  • Be approximately four to six pages in length, not including the required cover page and reference page.
  • Follow APA 7 guidelines. Your paper should include an introduction, a body with fully developed content, and a conclusion.
  • Support your answers with the readings from the course and at least two scholarly journal articles to support your positions, claims, and observations, in addition to your textbook.
