Discussion—A Life In Review

In late adulthood, most people engage in a process of life review. They recall their life histories and recount them to others as well. As people review the important events from their lives, they create a picture of their lives as an integrated whole. The last stage of Erikson’s theory is called ego integrity versus despair. As people complete their life reviews, they may feel a sense of integrity. This means they look back upon their lives with a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. Others may have a sense of despair. They often feel unfulfilled and have regret about choices they have made or events that have occurred.
Many people fear and dread the late adulthood stage of life because they believe what awaits them is ill health and cognitive decline. While that description fits some adults in later life, it certainly does not describe them all. Many older adults lead healthy, active lives and are closely connected to their families and communities.
Use your module readings and the Argosy University online library resources to research the process of life review.
Conduct your own life review and then respond to the following:

  • What do you look forward to about getting older?
  • What would you most like to look back on?
  • How do you view Erikson’s stage of integrity versus despair as it relates to your own life?

Support your arguments with research, citing sources.
Write your initial response in 150–200 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Correlational research, which you explored in this week’s Discussion, is useful in identifying relations between two variables, but does not make assumptions regarding cause and effect among the variables because researchers did not control for outside factors. To demonstrate possible causal relations among variables, researchers will need to manipulate variables in an experimental research design.
The variable that the researcher manipulates in an experimental research design is termed the independent variable. As a researcher, one important determination you need to make is the number of independent variables involved in the study. If you manipulate one independent variable, the study would be termed a one-way experimental design.
Researchers also need to determine dependent variables. In an experimental design, the dependent variable is the measure of the effect of the independent variable. If the dependent measure reveals an effect made by an independent variable, a researcher may be able to determine cause.
Consider a study that hypothesizes that 8-year-olds who play educational computer games score higher on intelligence tests than those who do not play educational computer games. Consider how many aspects you would need to address if you were conducting the study. First, you would need to understand that the independent variable is the game-playing, whereas the dependent variable is the scores on the intelligence test.
Next, you would need to determine the levels of the independent variable. In this scenario, suppose there are three levels of play: no play, some play (4 hours a week), and frequent play (8 or more hours a week).
Additionally, you would need to determine whether the study is a between-participants design or a within-participants design (also known as a repeated-measures design). A between-participants design uses different groups for each level. A within-participants design uses the same group, and that one group repeats the experiment for each level.
In this Assignment you apply key concepts related to experimental design to a research study and analyze and interpret the outcome.
To prepare:

  • Read the assigned pages from Chapter 10 in your course text. -Stangor, C. (2015). Research methods for the behavioral sciences (5th ed.). Stamford, CT: Cengage Learning.
  • Read the following study scenario: Researchers are interested in the effectiveness of a particular treatment for insomnia. They contact 50 insomnia sufferers who responded to a newspaper advertisement to participate in the study. Each participant is given a pill with instructions to take it before going to sleep that night. The pill actually contains milk powder (a placebo). The participants are randomly assigned to receive one of two sets of instructions about the pill. One half of the participants are told that the pill will make them feel “sleepy,” and the other half are told that the pill will make them feel “awake and alert.” The next day the participants return to the lab and are asked to indicate how long it took them to fall asleep after taking the pill. The individuals who were told that the pill would make them feel sleepy reported that they fell asleep faster than the participants who were told the pill would make them feel alert.
Think about the concepts you read about this week about one-way experimental designs and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and how they apply to the above study.

The Assignment (1–2 pages):
With the study scenario in mind, complete the following:

  1. Identify the independent variable and dependent variable. Indicate the number of levels in the independent variable and describe each level.
  2. Indicate whether the research used a between-participants or a within-participants research design and how you determined this to be the case.
  3. Presume a third condition was added to the study. In this condition, the participants are not given any information about the effects of the (placebo) pill. Next, suppose an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted. Briefly interpret, in your own words, what it would mean if the F was significant as applied to this study.

Instruction for assignment
Choose one example of a specific type of cancer to investigate. Examples include (but are not limited to) lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer. The choice can be even more specific such as 1) ductal breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer, or hormone negative or triple negative breast cancer, or 2) sporadic (does not run in families) colorectal cancer, hereditary non-polyptosis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) aka Lynch syndrome, or Familial Adenomatous polyptosis (FAP) colorectal cancer. Do some research and answer the following questions.
1. Disease Statistics: How common is the disease? What is the crude (overall) rate? What is the rate by race, ethnicity, gender, and stage of disease? Have rates changed over the years? Are there specific populations at risk, and are there associated behaviors that could be changed (like smoking or obesity)?
2. Discuss the biology of the cancer. I am specifically looking for terms used in this class: immune system cells, specific mutations, common metastatic sites, specific oncogenes (such as the HER-2 gene in breast cancer), or tumor suppressor genes.
3. Discuss the treatments used and the mechanisms of each treatment. Treatments include but are not limited to radiation, chemotherapy, biological, gene therapy. Again, I am looking for terms used in this class; I also encourage you to learn some new terms regarding treatment mechanisms.
4. You will also be graded on adherence to citation rules, grammar and organization.
5. This assignment is worth 1600. I have to do a work-around due to Turnitin, but will update your grade later.
Write a single-spaced, 12-point font paper min 2 pages, max 3 pages (not inclusive of citations). You may not use quotes, put all information into your own words. American Medical Association (AMA) is the required citation style. At least 2 journal articles are required, at least 5 citations total. You will be evaluated on the quality of your sources

You must use at least two original research papers, review articles or meta analyses found on PubMed. You must include at least 5 sources, total, and they all must be reputable sources (not from a wiki, blog or website selling something).

Writing guidelines

Guidelines for Writing Your paper will be taken seriously. I will read it carefully and grade closely. Papers will be judged on both content and form. It will pay handsomely to do the best job you can. 1. Content: High marks go to papers deriving intelligent generalizations from accurate and appropriate facts. Note the combination. Description alone is dull and pointless. Generalizations without supporting evidence are worthless. 2. Organization: From the beginning, make sure your reader knows what you intend to do and how you intend to do it. The biggest help here is to think of a meaningful title and write a cogent introduction. Then lead the reader through your main points, making sure there are no breaks in your logic. Finally, your conclusion should be written to sum up your main points. 3. Documentation: When you borrow facts or ideas from someone else, you must acknowledge the borrowing. Failure to do so is plagiarism, an unforgivable academic sin. Papers must include intext citations AND a list of references which cites all your sources, and must include citations within the paper for each time you borrow ideas or facts. SEE the guidelines for citations and follow them exactly. You must use at least two original research papers, review articles or meta analyses found on PubMed. You must include at least 5 sources, total, and they all must be reputable sources (not from a wiki, blog or website selling something). When reading original research articles, focus on the introduction and the discussion, both in the abstract and in the main text. You don’t have to understand every word nor do you have to understand the methods. Use a dictionary or other resources to help you understand what is being said. 4. English: Careful attention to formal English will pay dividends. Careless or bad writing will be penalized. The best way to avoid careless writing is to have a friend or the writing center proofread your paper. • Style: If you have doubts about style, write plain straightforward English. If you still have questions, get a copy of Strunk and White’s marvelous little handbook, The Elements of Style, available in paperback at bookstores in town and on campus. It is an excellent investment for your writing now and later. Read it carefully and pay attention to it. I use this for every manuscript I have published. • Mechanics: Your writing should be grammatical and correctly punctuated. Use a dictionary to check doubtful spelling and a thesaurus to select the best word in case you have any doubts. NOTE: You can avoid a lot of trouble by making a careful outline. Revise the outline as needed, well before you begin writing. Then, when you do write, expect to make a first draft, a second draft and as many successive ones as you need, before you finally put together the polished finished paper. There is no such thing as a good first draft paper. The last grant I submitted had 32 versions. The university writing center is available to help and will be happy to give comments and advice as you are going along. I find it useful to take the “last” draft and let it sit for several days. Just before the final typing, I do a careful editing job. The little bit of time between these steps makes it easier to find errors and awkwardness in my prose
Citation rules
Number references consecutively in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. Reference numbers in the text are full-sized Arabic numerals in parentheses within the sentence. For 3 or more consecutive references cited all at once, use, for example, (1-4). Format other references as (4, 5, 12), with spaces between the reference numbers.

When directly quoting material in the text, give the reference number followed by the page number(s) of the quotation, for example, (24, p. 65). Only short phrases (shorter than a sentence) are allowed for direct quotations. The point is for you to learn from the materials you are accessing and put the ideas in your own words. Examples of correct forms of references follow. Type references double-spaced. The titles of journals should be abbreviated according to the List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus (published by the National Library of Medicine). For more than 3 authors, list the first 3 and add “et al.”

Case Study 1.2 The IT Department at Hamelin Hospital
The IT Department case shows the prevalence of projects in settings that are perhaps not as obvious (in this case, a large hospital). The case is designed to get students to understand the ubiquitous nature of project-based work in our modern public and private organizations.  It also demonstrates career paths and how successful work on projects is often rewarded with corporate success.  Projects are not a distraction or a side-line; they are the principal means by which the IT department’s operations are demonstrated.
Questions
1. What are the benefits and drawbacks of starting most new hires at the help desk function?
2. What are the potential problems with requiring project team members to be involved in multiple projects at the same time? What are the potential advantages?
3. What signals does the department send by making “project manager” the highest position in the department?
Case Study 2.1 Rolls-Royce Corporation
Rolls-Royce is an example of a case based on new strategic opportunities and an organization’s desire to capitalize on market and technological developments.  As one of the premier manufacturers of jet engines of the commercial and military markets, Rolls-Royce is facing an opportunity to “piggy back” off Airbus’s newest airframe design, the A380, an enormous airplane capable of flying up to 750 people.  The case also demonstrates the manner in which Rolls-Royce must identify and manage their key stakeholder group for maximum effectiveness.
Questions
1. Who are Rolls-Royce’s principal project management stakeholders?  How would you design stakeholder management strategies to address their concerns?
2. Given the financial risks inherent in developing a jet engine, make an argument, either pro or con, for Rolls-Royce to develop strategic partnerships with other jet engine manufacturers in a manner similar to Airbus’s consortium arrangement.  What are the benefits and drawbacks in such an arrangement?
