Choose a Policy Issue Review the Unit 3 study activities to read a list of potential policy issues that will give you a foundation to help you determine which policy change you are interested in. Choose one issue to focus on. The area that you choose to focus on could include particular interests that would lead you to explore articles that look at legal, ethical, and regulatory process in health care or nursing practice.

What Is an Annotated Bibliography?

Use the four articles that you chose, keeping the following information in mind:
  • A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, et cetera) one has used for researching a topic. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (that is, the author, title, publisher, et cetera).
  • An annotation is a summary or evaluation.
  • Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary or evaluation of each of the sources in the bibliography. For this assignment, you are expected to include both a summary and an evaluation.
  • Your annotations should address the following three areas for EACH of the four articles you select:
    1. Summarize: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this article or chapter? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this source is about, what would you say?
    2. Evaluate: Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? (Or the goal of the writer?)
    3. Reflect: How does the source assist or fit into your practice? Was this source helpful to you? How might this source help you shape an argument (in favor of or against) the topic presented? Has the source changed how you think about this topic?

Assignment Grading

Be sure to consult the scoring guide for this assignment to see how your work will be graded. Notice that you will be expected to apply APA writing style to write clearly and logically, with correct use of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. You may wish to consult Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 in the APA manual and the information listed in this unit’s Writing Resources study. Review your annotated bibliography and make sure it is complete, using the checklist below.
Components of the annotated bibliography:
  • Begins with a title page that includes your name.
  • Lists citation information for the articles or chapters, formatted in APA style.
  • Each citation is followed by an annotation, approximately one page in length.
  • The bibliography comprises a variety of credible perspectives.
  • The final page consists of a reference list that includes all of your APA-formatted citations, in alphabetical order.
  • The assignment is 6-8 pages long, including the title page and references.
Each annotation should contain some or most of the following:
  • Provides the reader with more information about the content of the sources.
  • Consists of a paragraph that is both descriptive and evaluative (about 150 words).
  • Offers both a description and a critical assessment of the articles or chapters being annotated.
  • Gives the reader a sense of the quality of the source.
  • Gives a sense of the argumentative position of the author relative to others in the field.
  • Informs the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.
  • Concisely exposes the author’s point of view and the clarity of the work.
  • Evaluates the appropriateness of expression, and authority.
  • Summarizes the central theme and scope of the article or chapter.
  • Evaluates the authority or background of the author.
  • Comments on the intended audience.
  • Compares or contrasts this work with another you have cited.
  • Explains how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.

Review the article Critical thinking at the bedside: Providing safe passage to patients (Robert & Petersen, 2013).

Scenario:

Adam is a 10-year-old scheduled for discharge from the Emergency Department after a bicycle incident resulted in a fractured right ulna and radius. His arm has been casted, is immobilized and in a sling. Adam states, “My arm feels better now, and I am sleepy. The pain medicine makes me feel like I will vomit.” The RN is reviewing medications with Adam and his mother when the mother states, “We have a two (2) hour drive home from this emergency room. Can you give Adam something for nausea so he does not throw up in the car?” The RN has already completed the discharge paperwork, and the orthopedic physician who casted the arm has left the Emergency Department. The RN states, “No orders are available for Adam to have nausea medicine. I can give him another dose of pain medicine if you think that will help him sleep on the way home. Then he might not vomit.”

Initial Discussion Post:

  • Identify two (2) cognitive skills used in critical thinking the RN should have applied in this scenario
  • Provide an alternative nursing intervention to ensure safe patient care in this scenario.

Base your initial post on your readings and research of this topic. Your initial post must contain a minimum of 250 words. References, citations, and repeating the question do not count towards the 250 word minimum.

Epidemiology Assignment 1: Old World Epidemics
Imagine you are a Historian studying epidemics throughout history, and the impact that these epidemics may have had on the affected populations.
The goal of this assignment is to learn how to build a table from the available data, to find missing data, and to identify areas where no data is available.
One simple way that we organize data is to compare it side by side on a table.  You can use the attached excel file to build your table. You will use the information about old world epidemics in Chapter 2, p10-11 and p. 13-14, and organize it in such a way as to compare the events and put them it into a historical perspective.
Use the attached Excel file as a template for a table to sort out all of the epidemics described in the passage. Fill in the spaces with information that you find in the passage. For the information that is not given in the chapter, you should look up information on the internet.  If you can not find the information, type  “unkn” in the cell. If for some reason you can not use an excel file, you may type it into a Word or Pages file, or another format that will work for you.
You may find it difficult to fit too much information into a small excel block. The blocks will expand to fit your text, however you don’t have to write large amounts of text. You should be succinct. If you prefer, you can just write a couple of words and put a numerical footnote in, to refer your text in a Word file. DO NOT COPY blocks of text to paste into the table. That would be plagiarism. Use your own words and keep it succinct. Include the link for any website that you use as a reference.

Q1 Required)
Online auctions have effectively created a giant virtual marketplace where people can gather to buy, sell, trade and check out the goods of the day and people do make money through online auctions.
Now imagine you want to start auctioning products online. Answer the following:
1. Which company leads the online auction industry? Will you use this company to auction your products and why?
2. List what steps you must do to harness the volumes of traffic heading your way and generate the highest profits possible?
Remember the competition is fierce, and your product can easily get lost among the hundreds of listings.

Antibiotic Resistance
For many years, antibiotics have been effectively used to treat bacterial disease.
A growing concern for treating bacterial diseases is the evolution of antibiotic resistance by bacterial populations. Resistance means that a particular antibiotic is no longer effective in treating a disease. This resistance can be viewed as evolution of a new trait at the population level, which is resistance to an antibiotic.
Recommended: Click on the following links to review materials to increase your understanding of natural selection and antibiotic resistance.
Understanding Evolution
Antibiotic Resistance
Focus your discussion on 1 of the following topics:

  • The use, overuse, and abuse of antibiotics are accredited with creating antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. Explain how this relates to natural selection.
  • Using a credible source, describe at least 2 of the things that people do (you can include individuals, doctors, health care professionals, hospitals, farmers, and so on) that contribute to this problem. Explain.
  • Are there things that you can personally do to reduce your risk or even to reduce the spread of these dangerous microbes?

Utilize at least 1 credible source to support the arguments presented in your post.
In your own words, post a response to the Discussion Board, and comment on at least 2 other postings. You will be graded on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

Write 150 word responds to discussion below. Need to cite and reference to support answerHas anyone looked at the DSM V? It is the driving authority of healthcare professionals in diagnosis mental health disorders. It identifies the symptoms criteria that need to be met and descriptions of all the bonified disorders. Axis 1 tend to be the most serious followed by Axis 2 and a person can be have both Axis I and II disorders simultaneously. In my current profession there appears to be a pattern of people being sent into opioid withdrawal and as a result go into crisis in the hospital. I believe they are calling it opioid induced anxiety disorder of some sort. It is not a true diagnosis but the addiction of a drug in combination of life/personal issues can cause people to bottom out. People fall into depression develop anxiety and mood swings/disorders. The combination of drugs such as opiates and benzodiazepines (Xanex Klonopin) has sent people into panic and hallucinations. Each person is different in the eyes of the medical field therefore one of our mottos is to the treat the patient not the population. Opiates is an epidemic maybe even pandemic. Currently there is an ever growing need for licensed addiction counselors. Thisis a great form of private counseling with great opportunities to advance.
