Second-Generation HIT Informaticists Great discoveries can transform the world. In 400 BC, Hippocrates theorized that the body was composed of four “humors”—blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. Now think of the impact of the seminal work of William Harvey, who, in the 1600s, accurately described the circulation system and the role of the heart for the first time. It was not until the early 1900s that the Austrian biologist Karl Landsteiner identified four distinct blood groups. Today, knowledge about the nature and properties of blood is so complicated that the entire field of blood chemistry is devoted to its study. This same type of expansion of knowledge within a scientific field is mirrored within the field of informatics. As new technologies develop, subsequent changes occur in the fiel that are, built upon the earlier work of others. In this Discussion, you examine the continuing evolution of the field of health informatics and assess how researchers built on the work of preceding scientists. You will focus on the following individuals:

  • Joan Ash
  • Nancy Lorenzi
  • Ben Shneiderman
  • Diane Forsythe
  • Chuck Friedman
  • Sue Bakken
  • Patty Brennan
  • Diane Skiba
  • Danny Sands
  • Lucian Leape
To prepare:
  • Select and read at least one article from this week’s Learning Resources for at least five individuals listed above.
  • Consider how the work of each individual has built upon the work of earlier pioneers in the informatics field.
  • Assess the areas of growth in informatics research from the informatics pioneers you researched last week to the individuals you read about this week, and the ways in which health informatics has continued to evolve.
  • Select one individual from this week you found to be of particular interest, and read at least one additional article written by him or her from the list provided in the Learning Resources.
  • Conduct further research to determine recent contributions or additions to the individual’s research.
By Tomorrow 12/06/16, post a minimum of 550 words in APA format with a minimum of three references from the list provided below. Include the level one headings as numbered below: 1)      A brief summary of key contributions of the individual you selected. 2)      Explain which ideas/accomplishments you found to be most compelling, and why. 3)      Assess the evolution of the field of nursing informatics from the first group of pioneers (Week 1 Discussion) to the second generation of HIT nurse informaticists. 4)      Provide specific examples of how this evolution is evident in the field.]]>

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Explain each step in the forecasting process for each method.
  2. Provide a brief summary of your researched health services organizations implementing the forecasting methods.
  3. Provide a forecast of the number of clinic visits for November 2008 using each method of the forecasting process.
  4. Conclude which forecasting method provides the best forecast, and provide a rationale for your conclusion.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Evaluate forecasting strategies and methods.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in quantitative methods for health services.
  • Write clearly and concisely about quantitative methods for health services using proper writing mechanics.
Using one of the many financial apps (most of them are free) that are available for your tablet or smartphone these days, you can become your own banker. In fact, trips to the bank or even to an ATM could soon become a thing of the past. The new apps let you do all the functions that you could do on a bank’s Web site and more. For example, to deposit a check into your banking account, you can simply take a photograph of the front and back of the check, after which the app will ask you for the amount you want to deposit. Then you type the account number and then press “OK” to complete the deposit. With the Mint app (mint.com) from Intuit, you can even perform all sorts of analytics on your account. For example, you can establish a budget and keep track of the expenses in various categories, such as food, gas, and groceries. Another app that offers similar services is HelloWallet (hellowallet.com). Still other apps help you track and report work-related travel expenses. An example is an iPhone app called QuickShot. It allows you to take photos of your receipts, and the photos are automatically stored in an account on Dropbox, an Internet file-storage service. Banks, brokerage firms, and other financial institutions have developed their own apps that simplify their customers’ financial interactions with the institution. In addition, computers and robots are increasingly playing a role in the areas of finance and banking; for example, high- frequency trading in which bots account for up to 80 percent of the daily volume on the stock market and can buy and sell stocks in microseconds. Another growing application is the rise of the “robo advisor.” This is a method to automate the asset allocation of investments using a computer algorithm. When it comes to investing a typical investor has three choices: do-it-yourself, a robo advisor, or a financial advisor. Which option to choose depends on several factors such as the cost of the investment, age of the investor, amount of investment, his or her risk tolerance, and knowledge of investing. According to research, using “robo advisor” is certainly a viable choice. The three largest robo advisors by assets under management are Vanguard, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, and Betterment. Some are fully automated, and some are run in human-assisted mode.
Answer the following questions in a Microsoft® Word document and save the file on your computer with your last name in the file. (Example: module_02_case1_Jones.doc)

  1. What technology is used when you deposit a check into your account using your smartphone and your banking app?
  2. What are some examples of analytics that can be done using financial apps?

Culturally Competent Planning   For this assignment, select a vulnerable population in your community and explain how health care can be affected by cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds. Building on the skills that you practiced in your Unit 6 assignment, create a plan to promote health and wellness within your chosen population, using (and correctly citing) information from this week’s study activities and any additional resources that you find on your own as you research your chosen population. Paper length: 6-7 pages.   For the population, you can use Denver, and what risks, at-risk population we have. Inflation of the housing market, and not being compensated for the cost of living is just an example…but you’ll have to do a little research for our at-risk populations.   For your assignment:

  1. Identify your population, and explain why this specific population within your community qualifies as at-risk.
  2. Identify health concerns for this at-risk population.
  3. Identify existing resources in your community that serve and promote health for this specific underserved, at-risk population.
  4. Identify high-quality electronic sources of health care information to address the needs of your chosen population.
  5. Create an evidence-based plan to promote health and wellness in this at-risk population.
  6. Explain how culture, ethnicity, and social background may affect your health care plan and what strategies you would put in place to address these concerns.
  7. Follow the guidelines of APA writing style, using correct grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. Evaluate your work by reviewing it for clarity and logic.
  8. Correctly format citations (in-text and in your Reference list) using APA style.

Isaac has worked as a staff nurse on the telemetry floor for over 15 years. He holds seniority in the unit. His patient care is satisfactory; however, his interpersonal behaviors are becoming an increasing issue for his coworkers. He throws papers around the unit, gives short answers to questions, and seems generally miserable. He tells the staff that they are lazy and stupid. He is constantly questioning their decisions. You have come from another local hospital in the role of the assistant nurse manager. Based on your observations, you have met with Isaac informally and discussed his behaviors, but they have not changed. Now three new nurses have already come to you saying that this unit is a great match for them, except for one problem. Although they have not identified Isaac by name, they have told you that one of the nurses is extremely abusive verbally, and they have been calling in sick on the days they are scheduled to work with this person.

1. What are your responsibilities as an assistant nurse manager in regard to Isaac’s behavior problem?

2. What is the next step in dealing with Isaac’s behaviors?

3. How will you, as the manager, have Isaac develop more effective people skills?

This is your first position as a nurse manager. The holidays are rapidly approaching, and the hospital policy states that each unit will negotiate holiday coverage individually. You are already getting requests via e-mail and on Post-it notes for holiday time. Several staff members have come to you stating that they “never” seem to get their requests for holidays. Discussion among the staff members is creating dissension and conflict.

1. Discuss the potential impact of this problem on you and the unit staff.

2. Describe a minimum of one positive consequence and one negative consequence of this conflict.

3. Select a model of conflict resolution and explain how you, as a nurse manager, might resolve this conflict.

Visual Argument [Advertisement]

For this project, you will be required to create a visual argument in the form of an advertisement that corresponds to your Researched Argument Essay.

A visual argument is an argument that mostly relies on visuals [photographs, drawings, collages, objects, etc.] to prove an argument. You may use some text in your visual argument, but you should attempt to prove your argument with visuals.

For this project, your visual argument will be in the form of an 8 ½ x 11” advertisement [i.e. roughly the size of a one-page ad that would appear in a magazine]. Use Word or PowerPoint to insert and arrange images (and some text) and create your advertisement. You may decorate your advertisement however you wish, as long as all objects, pictures, etc. work to prove your argument, and are not there simply for decoration. What is most important to keep in mind for this project is that your ad should not just be pretty but should make an argument. So, your ad should not just be about your topic in general but should argue a position or side about your topic. However, instead of making your argument through words, this assignment requires you to make your argument through visuals.

I want you to have fun with this assignment, so be as abstract [symbolism, metaphor] or as concrete [pictures depicting events that deal directly with your topic] as you’d like. Be creative with the visuals you decide to use in your advertisement and the way you arrange them. Make sure, however, that you have a reason behind every choice you make; everything you include in your advertisement must work to prove your argument.

Things to keep in mind:
· Use text only when necessary. The point of this assignment is to work to make an argument using visuals. Think about how you can use visuals to your advantage [What can you “say” with visuals that you cannot say with text?].
· Think through ALL choices: Why are you using that color? Why are you placing that object there? Why do you want that drawing/picture to be that size? Do you feel that using some text is necessary? Why? Etc.
