Spin Doctoring Essay Assignment Paper – Critical Thinking Exercise
This assignment is worth up to 75 points. We will apply course concepts from Myers Chapter 7 (Persuasion) to the following case:
Case. Spin doctoring is form of impression management that has been in the repertoire of public relations practitioners for four decades. The term refers to the tactic of shifting the focus off of the negative and harmful aspects of something by substituting another issue that has positive connotations. Spin doctors change the terms of public perception and debate using the mass media, which today includes blogs and social media like Facebook. Spin doctoring is an international phenomenon the serves the interests of organizations in every sector of society.

The tobacco industry is considered to be the classic case of spin doctoring. After 1966 when the Surgeon General of the U.S. pronounced that cigarette packages must carry a health warning, the tobacco industry found a way to offset the damaging publicity by sponsoring sports and arts events and giving grants for community development. By de-emphasizing the dangers of smoking and emphasizing the positive contributions being made to community life, Big Tobacco trivialized the health problems and turned attention instead to its displays of corporate social responsibility. Spin Doctoring Essay Assignment Paper – Critical Thinking Exercise.
A contemporary example of spin doctoring relates to the claim that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, which was the original rationale for the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003. When the intelligence about weapons of mass destruction proved to be faulty, the debate was quickly and skillfully shifted by spin doctors to a humanitarian argument that the Iraqi people must be freed from the clutches Saddam Hussein the ruthless dictator. While no evidence of weapons of mass destruction could be found, mass graves of Iraqi citizens killed at the behest of Saddam Hussein could be found and thus, legitimate the invasion. Spin Doctoring Essay Assignment Paper – Critical Thinking Exercise.
The debate over climate change and global warming is very similar in some ways to the tobacco example because it involves the efforts of hydrocarbons producers to debunk the hypothesis that global warming is primarily caused by the high levels of CO2 emissions associated with the consumption of fossil fuels. By spinning the argument away from CO2 emissions towards touting how technology is producing cleaner, greener fuels, the hydrocarbon industry gives the appearance of being environmentally responsible at a time when the pressure from environmental organizations like Greenpeace and the Suzuki Foundation, and high-profile environmentalists like Al Gore cannot be denied.
Your Assignment: Use critical thinking to analyze the following three questions relating to aspects of persuasion. Specifically utilized the particular course concept or concepts stated in each question.

  1. Which paths(s) to persuasion is/are present in the global warming case? Explain how the paths are shown.
  2. How does the tobacco industry example fit into our understanding of impression management?
  3. Is spin doctoring the same as propaganda or is it fundamentally different? How so? Address the weapons of mass destruction case in your answer.

Answered Discussion Question: While reviewing literature and other types of evidence, there are usually gaps. These gaps imply that the researchers did not cover all the aspects of the topic under study, their conclusions were simply biased or the sample size selected was not ideal. In this regard, readers are required to use the information they obtain from the research study with some caution. This is because the presence of the gaps implies that the information in the research study is not a 100% accurate or credible. Gaps cannot nullify the validity or credibility of a research study. The presence of gaps simply show gives healthcare clinicians opportunity to integrate their own knowledge with the findings of the study while dealing with patients rather than just relying on the findings of the study. Through this integration, healthcare clinicians are likely to provide high quality healthcare services to patients (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2011). Therefore, the presence of gaps provides healthcare clinicians with an opportunity to create change. Original Answer: What is the difference between statistically significant evidence and clinically significant evidence? How would each of these findings be used to advance an evidenced-based project?]]>

The purpose of these papers is to allow you to explore and reflect on selected chapter readings from a more personal perspective. You will have an opportunity to critically express your own thoughts, ideas, and insights regarding a particular topic. These papers are less formal than a traditional term paper or research paper, but do require critical thinking. Despite being stylistically informal, these thought papers should not simply restate ideas as they were discussed in class or presented in the readings. Instead, they should reflect your own critical insights and thoughts on a particular topic.

To facilitate this process, I will provide 5 essay questions related to one major course topics. The topic involves stress and coping. These thought questions will be posted at the button.

Although it is acceptable to use a first person style (e.g., “I”) in writing these papers, they should nonetheless follow a good scholarly style, and can include references to other research, theories, etc. if you choose. Research and formal citations are not mandatory for course readings as it is understood that the material you are citing is already referenced on the course reading. However, you can include references in order to practice your APA style. Although you do not need to follow APA guidelines when writing these papers, good grammar and style are still important for conveying your ideas.

Each thought paper is expected to be single-spaced and typed, with a cover page indicating the title, date, your student number, etc. Although these are less formal compositions, handwritten papers are not acceptable. Each paper will be graded out of 50 (10 points per question x 5 questions = 50 marks) marks for originality, depth of thought, insight, critical thinking, and relevance to the concepts from class.

Course – Information Systems ITC 5301

A furniture company that spans 20 stores in multiple states understands the “tyranny of distance” or the logistics and cost of transporting inventory. Also, the challenge of having the right kind of inventory at the right location at the right time can mean the difference between success and failure as a business. Traditionally this was handled by managers at various levels. An ERM would be able to pull data from each of the stores based on the inventory and lead time from manufacturing to create a just-in-time inventory system. This makes the business more efficient because cash is not tied up in inventory where it is not needed and may save excess purchasing.

This efficiency comes at a cost. Choosing the software and the modules you need based on not just the initial cost but the recurring licensing fees is important. Also, the lifecycle management of the infrastructure if it is not cloud hosted. Another concern is the security of the system. For a small firm like the furniture business a cloud hosted solution would be the best solution because the security and keeping software for the system current is on the provider no the business.

Another hurdle to overcome is populating the data from the stores into the system. Typically, this is handled in a phased approach where 10% of the stores would input the data and test the new capabilities to look for hiccups and iron out the process for the following. Even if the system is cloud hosted the data entry can be daunting. Inputting all the human resource info, inventory and financial information depending on the used modules will be time consuming for employees.

Federalism and Public Policy
“Nothing is more certain than the indispensable necessity of government, and it is equally undeniable, that whenever and however it is instituted, the people must cede to it some of their natural rights in order to vest it with requisite powers.” – Alexander Hamilton
The U.S. Constitution established a national government based on the principle of federalism – which delineated government responsibilities at the federal and state level. Although the word federalism does not appear in the U.S. Constitution, sections of the U.S. Constitution explain powers held solely by the federal government, shared by both the federal and state governments, and reserved to the states.
Watch Constitutional Hall Pass: Federalism, a brief video explanation of federalism from the National Constitution Center.
Since the ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1788, the federal and state governments have been, on occasion, embroiled in a series of authorial and policy-making debates regarding the U.S. Constitution – in particular the evolving interpretation of the Tenth Amendment. This debate between federal power and state’s rights has many public policy examples.
Directions: Using the required, academic readings, and supplemental academic research, please address the following while adhering to the Discussion Board Rubric:
Identify the constitutional principles of federalism.
Select a specific example of federalism from one of the following fields:
Economic policy (for example, U.S. allocation of federal grants)
Education policy (for example, the implementation of Common Core)
Environmental policy (for example, the Clean Air Act)
Healthcare policy (for example, the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare))
Welfare policy (for example, Medicaid)
Explain this specific example of federalism.
Is this specific public policy a federal, state, or local public policy?
How does this specific public policy affect the roles of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches within a federal government?
Why does this example interest you?
How does this example affect you?
Support your analysis with information obtained from the text, the U.S. Constitution, and/or subsequent federal and state laws.
