The field of public health is constantly faced with serious issues affecting the health of populations, from chronic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity, to communicable diseases, such as influenza and HIV. When working in the public health field, it is crucial for practitioners to be able to critically analyze an issue and understand the complex factors that drive health behaviors. Basic knowledge of public health principles assists in analyzing an issue and informs effective solutions. For your final project, you will select a public health issue for analysis. The topic must be approved by the instructor. This analysis will give you the opportunity to explore a public health issue in depth and analyze various components, including a program or intervention that has been designed in order to improve or eradicate the health issue. Information should come from credible sources; in today’s information-rich age, it can be sometimes be difficult to distinguish between credible and non-credible sources. This project will give you an opportunity to perform research and analyze information for its credibility—a skill that is critically needed in modern public health practice and one that you will use throughout your future MSPH program courses. The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules Two, Four, and Seven. The final submission will be due in Module Nine. This assessment addresses your mastery with regard to the following course outcomes:  Evaluate public health for its historical and current significance in protecting and promoting individual, community, and population health  Analyze the role of the determinants of health in both the onset of and solution to public health problems  Assess the impact of social and behavioral factors on individual and population health behaviors for informing design of effective public health programs  Analyze the contributions of public health agencies, positions, and roles in effectively delivering public health’s core functions and essential services  Assess the extent to which public health programs utilize fundamental public health principles and theories in promoting individual and population health  Assess the impact of local, national, or international programs or interventions on public health issues Prompt Your public health issue analysis paper will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of your selected public health issue, including why it has become a public health issue and its significance in the public health landscape. Nursing Informatictis

Assignment: Application: Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

Have you ever gone online to search for a journal article on a specific topic? It is amazing to see the large number of journals that are available in the health care field. When you view the library in its entirety, you are viewing untapped data. Until you actually research for your particular topic, there is little structure. Once you have narrowed it down, you have information and once you apply the information, you have knowledge. Eventually, after thoughtful research and diligent practice, you reach the level of wisdom—knowledge applied in meaningful ways.

Are there areas in your practice that you believe should be more fully explored? The central aims of nursing informatics are to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum represents the overarching structure of nursing informatics. In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom.

To prepare:

  • Review the information in Figure 6–2 in Nursing Informatics and the Foundation of Knowledge.
  • Develop a clinical question related to your area of practice that you would like to explore.
  • Consider what you currently know about this topic. What additional information would you need to answer the question?
  • Using the continuum of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom, determine how you would go about researching your question.
    • Explore the available databases in the Walden Library. Identify which of these databases you would use to find the information or data you need.
    • Once you have identified useful databases, how would you go about finding the most relevant articles and information?
    • Consider how you would extract the relevant information from the articles.
    • How would you take the information and organize it in a way that was useful? How could you take the step from simply having useful knowledge to gaining wisdom?

Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following: APA style with refernces

  • Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific.
    • Identify the databases and search words you would use.
    • Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge.
  • Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search.

Your paper must also include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page.

Case study on Vulnerability and Marginalized Populations

  • How should public health professionals interact with families undergoing health crises?
  • How should public health professionals interact with the media in high profile cases?
  • How can understanding the experience of Louise Troh and her family help me become a better public health professional?

This week, instead of discussing a case study from your book, we are going to consider the experience of Louise Troh and her family. The goal is for you to work on your intellectual empathy give consideration to how you will interact with individuals who are vulnerable. Be sure to view the video news clips posted in this module for a sampling of the media coverage during the 2014 Ebola incident in Dallas.
Phase 1: Analyze Louise Troh’s experience
In the first part of your discussion board, you will address several questions about the Louise Troh’s memoir My Spirit Took You In: The Romance that Sparked an Epidemic of Fear. I’d like for each member of the team to choose one question to address.  Let your team know early in the week which question you will be answering.
1.  What characteristics of this family indicate that they are members of a vulnerable population?
 2.  What stood out to you in Louise’s descriptions of Liberian culture?
 3.  What stood out to you in Louise’s description of her experience as an immigrant adapting to a new culture?
 4.  How did Louise’s employment and experience as a certified nurse’s aide impact her response to Mr. Duncan’s illness and hospitalization? Do you think she acted appropriately? Why or why not?
5.  Describe the role of the individual public health professionals who interacted with this family. In what ways did they do a good job? What could they have done better?
6.  Describe the response of the community (neighbors, church members, members of the Liberian community) to Mr. Duncan’s diagnosis of Ebola. Which responses were helpful?  Which responses were harmful? What could the community have done better?
7.  Describe the response of the media. Was it appropriate, helpful, or harmful? Why? How did the media reports impact the public?
Phase 2: How will this case impact your practice as a public health professional?
In the second part of your discussion board, use your analysis to reflect on how you will practice as a public health professional. Respond to these prompts. Each member of the team should respond to all four questions:
1.  Now that you have discussed the details of the case, engage your intellectual empathy.  Which member of the surviving family did you identify with the most? Imagine that you are that person.  Really take a few minutes to imagine what it would be like to be quarantined, how it would affect your work and personal life, what your grief would be like, and what it would be like to be treated with fear and bias by others.
2.  Consider the experience of Kaci Hickox, RN and Public Health Professional. Do you think she responded appropriately to the call for mandatory quarantine? Why or why not?
3.  Based on these reflections, how will you as a public health professional interact with members of a vulnerable population?
4.  Based on these reflections, what ethical obligations do you have as public health professionals when communicating with members of the media about public health crises?

The Professional CommunityActions for The Professional CommunityThe realm of public health is diverse; with roles for local state federal and even international agencies. As with other sectors of health care professional communities contribute as well in direct and indirect manners.Research one or more of these professional organizations or another entity with a public health focus. American Public Health Association Association of State and Territorial Health Officials National Association of County and City Health Officials Society for Disaster Medicine and Public HealthWhat role do they play in the promotion of public health? What mechanisms do they use? Do any publish a peer-reviewed journal? Would you join one of these organizations? Why or why not?As a second step identify an article in a juried (peer reviewed) publication related to public health. Upload the article or abstract (some articles require payment for access) as an attachment. Why did you select this article? What impact has it had or might it have?As with all Discussions read the postings of at least two classmates and craft a thoughtful reply to each. Provide them with constructive feedback on their essays. (This is an improvement opportunity for all.)

1. You work as a resident assistant at a university that has recently become a “smoke free” environment. You have a number of students in your dorm who you know are smokers. As the RA, you play a role in informing the students of this policy change at the school and providing students with appropriate information and resources.

You decide to have a meeting with your residents to discuss the policy change. You plan to address:

  • The rational for this change (Why is the college instituting this policy. You might address: acute and chronic impacts of smoking, the impact of passive smoking, etc.)
  • The pharmacology of nicotine
  • If the students want to try to quit or reduce their use because  of the new rules, what options do they have?

Create a PowerPoint presentation that you will use at this meeting. Remember that your population is college students.

2. On page 254, our text states that “multiple types of factors influence the development of alcohol use disorder” and alcohol use disorder “is caused and maintained by a combination of biological, psychological, and sociological factors.” It goes on to include that alcohol use disorder cannot be understood unless “all the types of influencing variables” are considered.

When a patient enters treatment for an alcohol use disorder, step one is the completion of a Biopsychosocial Assessment. Review the Biopsychosocial Assessment below and make a list of the biological, the psychological, and the social or sociological factors that you believe may be contributing to his alcoholism. Lastly, please write at least 6 sentences reflecting your recommendations for this individual. Recommendations can include professional interventions, personal interventions, legal interventions, family-based interventions, medical interventions, etc.

The identified patient (IP) is 44 year old divorced Caucasian male.  IP reported that he took his 3 children on vacation to Ocean City on 8/10/19. On 8/12/19 IP went to the beach with his kids and reported drinking 2 beers. Later that evening he took his kids out to dinner, where he reported drinking 3 nip size bottles of vodka. During their walk home the IP fell. Concerned citizens came to his aid and when they realized he was intoxicated they called the police. When the police arrived they took the IP and his children to the police department. IP’s mother in law drove from Pennsylvania to Maryland to pick up the children. At 11:00pm the IP was transferred to a local medical center where they performed a BAC test. 5 hours after his initial arrest. BAC was .321. IP was confronted on the fact that his recorded BAC does not accurately represent his reported alcohol consumption throughout the evening. IP admitted that he had consumed more alcohol than initially reported but was unwilling to elaborate on how much. After he was medically stabilized the police transferred IP to the local correctional facility. He appeared in front of the judge the following day and was released with 3 charges of endangering the welfare of a child. IP is divorced and had sole custody of his children leading up to the arrest.

IP reported that he had a normal upbringing and there was no abuse within the household growing up. However, he described his father as a “functional alcoholic” and stated that he was very strict with him and his brother. He reported that his mother drank socially and sometimes took medication to help her control anxiety.  His parents divorced when he was 15 years old and he stated that “it sucked.” He and his brother spent the week with their mother and the weekends with their father. IP noted that after the divorce his relationship with his father started to deteriorate and reported that he has not had a relationship with his father for the last 8 years. IP reported that his paternal grandparents were heavy drinkers. He shared that his brother doesn’t have any known substance use problems, but has been in treatment for a gambling addiction twice.

IP was divorced in June of 2015. IP was with his wife for 12 years and noted that they were happy with each other until they had children. He reported that his wife had complaints about his drinking and he feels that this contributed to their separation. IP reported that after their first child his wife told him that she did not want to be married and she did not want to be a mother. They subsequently had two more children. Children are currently 10, 8, and 6 years old.  IP currently has 3 counts of endangering the well fare of a minor. He reported that he has very limited supports in his life and his primary purpose is looking after his children and working.
