Presenting Arguments

[WLOs: 2, 3] [CLOs: 1, 2, 5]

In this class, we learn to evaluate issues in light of the reasoning on all sides prior to arriving at conclusions. We aim to evaluate the quality and quantity of evidence, striving to be as objective as we can about what is most likely to be true.
If you have not done so already, begin by choosing a topic from the Final Paper Options list (located in your online classroom) to use in your writing assignments in this course. The next step is to formulate a specific research question that is important regarding this topic. You may review The Research Process (Links to an external site.) resource for more information. So, if your topic is gun control, you would formulate a specific question, such as, “Are universal background checks effective at reducing violent crime in America?”
Once you have formulated your question, conduct research from non-scholarly sources on the internet (e.g., news articles, op-eds, etc.) that present substantive reasoning on each side of the issue.
Your task is to present and evaluate the reasoning from a non-scholarly source on each side of your issue. There is no need to take sides on the issue at this stage. In your analysis, strive to be as objective as possible, evaluating the reasoning from a neutral point of view. For an example of how to complete this paper, take a look at the Week 1 Example paper.
Your paper should include clearly labeled sections addressing the following elements:

  • Introduction (approximately 100 words)
    • Explain your topic.
    • State the specific question that you are addressing.
  • Presentation of an Argument
    • Describe the non-scholarly source (e.g., an op-ed, newspaper article, website, etc.) on one side of the issue.
      • Summarize the key points made (approximately 50 words).
    • Present what you see as the main argument from that source. Make sure to present your argument in standard form, with the premises listed above the conclusion. (approximately 100 words)
    • Evaluate the quality of the reasoning in this source (approximately 200 words)
      • In completing your evaluation, consider assessing how well the research supports the premises of the main argument and how strongly the reasoning supports the conclusion of that argument.
  • Presentation of an Argument on the Other Side of the Issue
    • Describe the non-scholarly source on the opposite side of the issue.
      • Summarize the key points made. (approximately 50 words)
    • Present what you see as the main argument from that source. (Make sure to present your argument in standard form, with the premises listed above the conclusion.) (approximately 100 words)
    • Evaluate the quality of the reasoning in this source (approximately 200 words)
      • In completing your evaluation, consider assessing how well the research supports the premises of the main argument and how strongly the reasoning supports the conclusion.

Questions:

  1.
    1. Analyze a passage that reflects the cultural differences between the two “city youths” (Luo and the narrator) and the villagers. What stands out as important to you (3)?
    2. What role does storytelling play in this part of the novel? Be sure to use detailed examples here.
    3. Where do you see irony in this section?
    4. Find a passage that demonstrates signs of the violence done to one or more characters (physical, psychological, emotional, or otherwise) because of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, and assess the resulting behaviors of those experiencing the violence. In other words, what do you think are the consequences of this type of experience on the character as seen in the novel (be sure to use the textual evidence as your proof).
    5. What is your favorite passage so far? Why?
Have you ever heard the term or saying “straight but not narrow”? This is an example of a statement of being an ally—recognizing one’s unique position of privilege yet standing with others who are oppressed. By taking this course, you have started the process of becoming an ally. Evan and Washington (2013) identify the steps toward being an ally, which include being supportive of those who are unlike you, learning about other cultures, becoming aware of the oppression and marginalization, and becoming aware of one’s own privilege. Getting involved in issues is part of that process. You will consider how to become an ally this week.
To prepare: Review “Working With Survivors of Human Trafficking: The Case of Veronica.” Think about how one might become an ally to victims of human trafficking . Then go to a website that addresses human trafficking either internationally or domestically.

Post a brief description of the website you visited. Explain how you might support Veronica and other human trafficking victims incorporating the information you have found. Explain how you can begin to increase your awareness of this issue and teach others about human trafficking victims. Describe opportunities to get involved and become an ally to those who have been trafficked. Identify steps you can take to begin to support this group.

Assignment #2 – Classical and Operant Conditioning
For each scenario described on the next page do all of the following.
First, label each as either Classical Conditioning or Operant Conditioning (1 point) AND explain why
you decided the example was classical or operant conditioning (1 point).
If it is an example of classical conditioning, identify each of the following (1 point each):
 Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS),
 Unconditioned Response (UCR),
 Conditioned Stimulus (CS),
 Conditioned Response (CR)
If it is an example of operant conditioning, identify if which type of conditioning, i.e.:
Positive Reinforcement, Negative Reinforcement, Positive Punishment, Negative Punishment
(1 point)
Also, explain your reasoning by stating each of the following (1 point each)
 what behavior the behavior is,
 what the consequence is,
 why it is reinforcement or punishment,
 why is it positive or negative.
NOTE: some of the examples of operant conditioning may be interpreted in more than one way.
Examples
Example 1: Every time you get the stomach flu, your roommate/mom feeds you chicken noodle soup. Now,
whenever you think about or smell chicken noodle soup, you feel nauseous.
(worth a total of 6 points).
Correct Answer:
This is classical condition (1 point) REASON: the stimulus (getting the stomach flu) comes first and an
involuntary response (feeling nauseous) follows (1 point).
The associated stimuli are as follows:
UCS: the stomach flu (1 point).
UCR: feeling nauseous (1 point)
CS: chicken noodle soup (1 point).
CR: feeling nauseous when you think about or smell chicken noodle soup
because you have learned to associate it with feeling sick from the stomach flu (1 point).
Example 2: You have test anxiety, but you discover that if you prepare more thoroughly by studying more, your test
anxiety is not as bad (worth a total of 7 points).
Correct Answer:
This is operant conditioning (1 point) REASON: the behavior (studying for exams) is voluntary and comes
first, and the consequence (reduced test anxiety) follows (1 point).
This is negative reinforcement (1 point).
The behavior is studying for exams (1 point).
The consequence is reduced test anxiety (1 point)
The behavior is increased making this reinforcement (1 point).
It is negative because test anxiety is taken away by the behavior (1 point).

Assignment #2 – Classical and Operant Conditioning
Questions come in part from materials available at:
http://www.ar.cc.mn.us/biederman/courses/p1110/cond2answers.htm#Example%20Number%203
1. A lion in a circus learns to stand up on a chair and jump through a hoop to receive a food treat.
2. Your young nephew is bitten by a squirrel that was not captured and now he has to get a series of painful
rabies shots. The person who administers the shot always wears a white lab coat. Now your nephew screams
whenever he is approached by any adult who is wearing a white shirt.
3. Your hands are cold so you put your gloves on. In the future, you are more likely to put gloves on when it’s
cold.
4. You eat a new food and then get sick because of the flu. However, you develop a dislike for the food and
feel nauseated whenever you smell it.
5. Your car has a red, flashing light that blinks annoyingly if you start the car without buckling the seat belt.
You become less likely to start the car without buckling the seat belt.
6. Every time someone flushes a toilet in the apartment building, the shower becomes very hot and causes the
person to jump back to avoid being burned. Over time, the person begins to jump back automatically after
hearing the flush, before the water temperature changes.
7. You check the coin return slot on a pay telephone and find a quarter. You find yourself checking other
telephones over the next few days.
8. A professor has a policy of exempting students from the final exam if they maintain perfect attendance
during the quarter. His students’ attendance increases dramatically.
9. An individual receives frequent injections of drugs, which are administered in a small examination room at
a clinic. The drug itself causes increased heart rate but after several trips to the clinic, simply being in a
small room causes an increased heart rate.
10. You get excited and feel happy every time you see your boyfriend/girlfriend, who always wears the same
aftershave/perfume. Now you feel happy whenever you smell that aftershave/perfume.
11. Your father gives you a credit card at the end of your first year in college because you did so well. As a
result, your grades continue to get better in your second year.
12. Every week you watch the same scary program on TV, and while you watch, you always have a big bowl of
popcorn. Now whenever you smell or eat popcorn it makes you feel frightened.

Imagine that you are a public health nurse, and you and your colleagues have determined that the threat of a deadly new strain of influenza indicates a need for a mass inoculation program in your community. What public health data would have been used to determine the need for such a program? Where would you locate public health data? What data will be collected to determine the success of such a program? How might you communicate this to other communities or internationally?
P.S. I only need half-page, please follow the instructions questions and answers as it asks. I need two references one from McGonigle, D., & Mastrian, K. G. (2018). Nursing informatics and the foundation of knowledge (4th Ed) book and others from the scholarly articles. That is less than five years published.
 Thank you
