You can narrow your focus by drilling down into five subcategories (disability assistance, national and community service, poverty and welfare assistance, social security and elderly assistance, and social work/volunteer service/charitable organizations).
• What past and current policies address the issue? (An option is to create a timeline to show that policies are incremental.)

Workshop Three Policy Analysis—Section 2: Historical Review (two pages) Using the specific current social welfare policy associated with the issue you selected in Workshop One, conduct a historical review:
• Discuss the historical development/evolution of the social policy (social issues/problems that led to the need for the policy to be developed, what has changed over time, etc.).
• Identify the implementation level of the policy (federal, state, or local). • Identify the agency, department, or commission involved in formulating or implementing this policy.
(Give background information on the agency’s mission, budget, organization, etc.) • Explain why the policy was developed and to what issues or problems it was responding (goals,
strategies, etc.). What are the main causes of the issue? • Discuss what political or social pressures shaped the policy’s framework. • Identify what the policy was intended to accomplish (original intent of the policy). • Describe how the policy attempts to address the social problem in question. • Discuss the ideology and values (the basis of or inherent in the policy) that underpin this social policy,
including any specific political influences. • Describe how the policy aims to address the three social justice values that drive choices in policy
formation: equity, equality, and adequacy.
Workshop Four
Policy Analysis—Section 3: Target Population (one page) Identify the demographics of the target population (statistical descriptors), including who benefits and under what conditions (eligibility criteria) and for how long (time, age limits).
• What benefits are allocated? How are these benefits delivered and financed? • Define who is affected and how they are affected.
 
 
 
Workshop Five Policy Analysis—Section 4: Implementation Realities—Primary and Secondary Sources (two pages)
Gather primary and secondary source information about the policy implementation realities. Compare and contrast the primary and secondary sources and synthesize the information.
Primary Sources Conduct an interview with a social worker who may have been affected by the policy. Ask him/her the questions, listed below, regarding analyzing the policy in light of its stated intent.
• Discuss the implications of the policy in regard to gender, race, and class. Does the policy “do” what it intended to? If not, why? If so, how well?
• What are current perceptions of the policy? • Analyze the policy’s strengths and limitations in addressing the social welfare issue. • Describe current issues with the impacted population as well as the policy. • Describe barriers or potential barriers to the effectiveness of the policy. • Discuss alternative approaches that might better embrace a social justice perspective, or affirmation

Question Description

  • Students must prepare a three to four page typewritten double-spaced paper on a current macroeconomic topic that is pertinent to class material. This can be chosen from the textbook, newspapers, magazines, or current economics periodicals.
  • Students will be expected to analyze and evaluate the issue or topic and provide recommendations. Here are some sample topics:

– The impact of drug legalization on the economy

– Using economics, how would you fix the homeless problem in California?

– Is the bullet train viable in California?

– How do interest rates affect consumers and their purchasing patterns

– How could the “Great Recession” have been prevented?

– Countries that do not believe in comparative advantage

– How could the Federal Government reduce the national debt?

– If you were the President of the U.S. what would you do to improve the economy?

– Which presidential candidate will have the most profound impact on the economy?

  • Length – 3 to 4 pages in length, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins. Any paper that deviates from these requirements will be penalized (this does not include the title page and the table of contents). Arial or New Times Roman (12 pt) will be the only acceptable fonts. Use headings within the report when appropriate. A table of contents page is necessary. Plan the paper carefully so as to develop an organized and non-redundant report. Background
ventilator.jpgManagement strategies for ARDS include correcting hypoxemia and acid-base disturbance, restoring cardiac function, and treating the underlying disease or precipitating factors. This is generally accomplished with mechanical ventilation at 6-8 ml/kg ideal body weight and the application of PEEP to correct refractory hypoxemia.
High levels of positive pressure may be required to produce adequate ventilation and oxygenation, but its adverse effect on cardiac function must be monitored closely. Some patients may benefit from pressure control (PC) ventilation to minimize the mean airway and parenchymal lung pressures. In PC mode the inspiratory time is increased and pressures are generally reduced, but the mean airway pressure may remain the same or slightly increased. This ultimately shortens the inspiratory time, inverts the I:E ratio, and potentially increases alveolar ventilation. As inspiratory time increases, and the elastic limit of the lung is reached, intrinsic PEEP increases air trapping and thus, may increase the PaCO2 while also increasing the occurrence of pneumothorax in an already stiff lung. These important considerations must be kept in fine balance with each factor receiving equal attention.

Management of ARDS
A multitude of causative factors may produce acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The clinical manifestations associated with ARDS usually appear within 6-72 hours of an inciting event, and worsen rapidly. The patient initially presents with dyspnea, cyanosis, bilateral crackles, tachypnea, tachycardia, diaphoresis, and use of accessory muscles on inspiration. A cough and chest pain may be present. The general clinical course is characterized by several days of hypoxemia that requires moderate to high concentrations of FiO2. The bilateral alveolar infiltrates and diffuse crackles are persistent during this period, and the patient’s overall health status is fragile as a result of the severe hypoxemia. Most patients who survive this initial clinical course begin to show oxygenation improvements and decreasing alveolar infiltrates over the next several days.
Permissive hypercapnia, allowing the patient’s PaCO2 to increase, is used as a tradeoff to protect the lungs from high airway pressures. In most cases, an increased ventilator rate adequately offsets the decreased tidal volume used in the management of ARDS. The PaCO2, however, should not be permitted to increase to the point of severe acidosis (a pH below 7.2).
Inverse Ratio Ventilation (IRV)
IRV is a subset of PCV where the inflation time is prolonged, (In IRV, 1:1, 2:1, or 3:1 may be used. Normal I:E is 1:3). This lowers peak airway pressures but increases mean airway pressures. The result may be improved oxygenation but at the expense of compromised venous return and cardiac output, thus it is not clear that this mode of ventilation leads to improved survival. IRV’s major indication is in patients with ARDS with refractory hypoxemia or hypercapnia in other modes of ventilation.

Ms. Y is a 23 year-old woman who was feeling fine until the morning of admission when she began having severe chills, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and fever of 40*C. The symptoms persisted throughout the day and caused her to seek medical attention at the local ED. Ms. Y had an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted at a local family planning clinic 3 days before admission. At the time of admission, she denied shortness of breath, wheezing, sputum production, cough hemoptysis, orthopnea, chest pain, illicit drug use, or exposure to TB.
Physical Exam:
-General
Patient is well nourished, alert & oriented; she appears anxious but there is no evidence of respiratory distress
-Vital Sign:
Temp 40*C; RR 24 bpm; HR 104/min; BP 126/75
-Chest:
Normal configuration & expansion while breathing; normal resonance to percussion bilaterally
-Lungs:
Clear to auscultation bilaterally
