Caring for a population involves identifying the factors that  place at risk a population’s health, as well as developing specific  interventions to address those factors. The roles of nurses in this  regard include preventing illness and injury, teaching clients,  promoting wellness, surveilling disease, shaping and formulating health  care policy, collaborating and partnering with communities, advocating  for clients, evaluating nursing care, and promoting positive client  outcomes.

In addition, the use of evidence-based strategies and models  facilitates the successful implementation of nursing interventions or  health programs, along with the tools and methods to evaluate the  effectiveness, efficiency, and appropriateness of nursing-care processes  and outcomes.

Part I

To prepare for the first part of the assessment, complete the following:

1. Review the literature or use health assessments to determine health care needs of a diverse population in your community.
2. Explore things that could influence success, such as cultural  attitudes toward alternative forms of healing, religious beliefs, or  other individuals.
3. Examine the impact of current health promotion and wellness initiatives on health outcomes and health disparities.
4. Review the literature to identify best practices.

Once you have identified a diverse population, develop an  educational program, event, or piece of literature that promotes  wellness and disease prevention. If you choose an educational program or  event, be sure you outline the basic content of the program or event,  as well as how you would structure it. If you choose a piece of  literature, be deliberate in the points you highlight. Be sure that your  choice is appropriate for the population.

• For an educational program or event, prepare and submit an outline of the content and structure.
• For a brochure or pamphlet, prepare and submit the brochure or  pamphlet using a simple Word document or a Microsoft Publisher document,  if you have that software available.

Part II

Explain how you developed your educational program, event, or piece  of literature and address any barriers to disease prevention and health  promotion for the population.

Complete the following:

1. Explain why you chose the particular educational strategy. Why is it an effective strategy for the population?
2. Describe cultural barriers to disease prevention and health  promotion in the population. This might include things such as CAM,  language, religious beliefs, and so on.
3. Explain how your educational strategy can help overcome some of the barriers you described.
4. Support your work with valid scholarly resources.

Using the South University Online Library or the Internet, research and read about a health issue in specific regions in the United States. Some examples of the topics for your research could be:

• HIV or AIDS in African-Americans in Southern United States.
• Alcoholism in Native Americans in Midwestern United States.
• Diabetes among Navajo people in Southwest United States.
• Obesity among low-income children in Eastern United States.

Note: You may choose another population and region, these are just examples. You may also visit the Library of this course to gather data for your research.

Based on your research and data gathered, create a report in a 3- to 4-page Microsoft Word document, that addresses the following:

• The main issues being discussed and the message you wish to deliver to the affected population.
• Population affected.
• Age, gender, race, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, religion, etc. of the target population.
• Segment of the United States population affected along with the percentage.
• Social factors such as culture and religion that may influence the burden of the disease.
• Ethical issues that may be factors in developing and implementing prevention and intervention programs for the disease.
• Various components of the health care system that can assist the community.
• Methods that the health care system should use to assist the community. (For example, state health care systems may revise or develop new policies to address the issue).

Can you add something valuable to this discussion. ExplainThis chapter highlights the importance of paying attention to behavior and working through mental health with inmates. I work at a juvenile detention center and mental health is extremely important and part of the treatment plan for every inmate. They will do things that seem irrational but there are mental reasons behind their actions. There are a handful of kids that will fight and act out until they are restrained because the restrain makes them feel safe and able to talk. Acting like this is the only way they feel comfortable to open up. Other times they will self harm or throw objects in the room like chairs to act out until they are given an emergency therapy session. Each day the kids have a therapy circle and have to say why they behaved the way they did that day. I think this is helpful to talk through their actions and make them aware of how to be more appropriate so they can be productive citizens when or if they get out of the criminal justice system. Having therapy and or talking through their actions every day holds them accountable and when the kids see their actions in writing they often come to the realization that they were not acting right. I think it is important for the healing process for the kids to talk through their pasts that led them to be detained so young. If their mental health or the mental health of any imprisoned person was ignored a cycle of incarceration will follow. They are there to be reformed and that starts with mental help.
