Patients traditionally have received all their medical information from their physicians. However, “Dr. Google” and “Nurse Bing” have increasingly become trusted sources of health information. As a result, everyone from pharmaceutical companies to prosthesis suppliers has added direct-to-consumer advertising to their promotional mix. This is very controversial because it tends to disrupt the traditional doctor-patient relationship.
This project provides you with the opportunity to thoroughly research a current direct-to-consumer advertising technique (online ads or social media, for example) and how it is used to promote a healthcare product or service. This project will help you understand how to communicate directly with healthcare consumers and improve your marketing knowledge.
Your final project is due in Module 09. There will be individual assignments along the way. The module they are due is noted in the time line below.

For this project, you will write an original research paper with a body of 5-6 pages. The paper should focus on a direct-to-consumer technique, thoroughly explaining what it is, why it’s important, and how it fundamentally impacts healthcare marketing.
Your paper final should consist of the following pages:
Title Page – captivating title, your name, title of the course, date
Body – 5-6 pages consisting of introduction, background on your topic, research support using in-text citation, personal evaluation, and strong conclusion.
Reference Page – in APA format.
Research and Writing Requirements include the following:
- Incorporate key elements of a quality research paper (e.g., strong thesis, attention-getting opening, topic sentences, etc.).
- Use proper mechanics: clear, concise, complete sentences and paragraphs, proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. (See style handbooks recommended by your college’s Online Library, which you can access through the Resources tab.)
- Use five or six sources for the paper from your research. Your textbook is a good resource. Internet resources should be reliable, for instance, a university or government website. Please use one or two sources as available from your college’s Online Library. Use statements and ideas that you have come up with on your own and blend these in with your research. Do not plagiarize. If you want to use actual words from a source, put them in quotation marks with the source.
- Follow APA format for citing your sources. APA format should be followed in parenthetical references to research in the body of the text and in the annotated bibliography in the References Page at the end. For APA guidelines, go to your college’s online library, which you can access through the Resources tab.
Evaluation
Each assignment leading up to the final assignment is evaluated and graded independently. Your instructor will provide specific grading criteria for each step of the project prior to its due date.

EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT OF PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION (PHI).
UncategorizedData breaches, be it credit card or medical information, have become commonplace. With so much personal information now available electronically, the protection of private information has become an important issue for health administrators.
You are a hospital administrator, charged with overseeing your hospital’s HIPAA compliance. Due to increased rates of data breaches around the country and a recent decision made by the Connecticut Supreme Court, Bryne v. Avery Center, your supervisor has asked you to prepare a presentation for the hospital board of directors and other stakeholders that will serve as a conversation starter regarding this issue.
Emily Bryne v. Avery Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology, P.C. (SC 19873) Retrieved from https://jud.ct.gov/external/supapp/Cases/AROcr/CR327/327CR110.pdf

What is the intent and purpose of HIPAA?
Explain the concept of Protected Health Information (PHI).
What impact can the breach of PHI have on patients/consumers?

What are the common symptoms associated with an exacerbation of COPD?
Nursing Homeworksreflect on what you have learned about tobacco use and the role that nurses and other interdisciplinary team members play in helping to assist tobacco users with quitting.
Week 5 Discussion Video Transcript Video Audio Anne at her desk reviewing a patient chart as she expresses her inner thoughts
Anne: Let’s see… my next patient is Mary. She’s 53, Caucasian, and had a heart attack a year ago. She is being seen today for an exacerbation of COPD. She also has controlled Type II diabetes. She’s had depression that started when she lost her job a year ago. She’s still is unemployed but receiving government checks. But that isn’t enough income for her to live independently. She had to move in with her daughter and son- in-law.
Today her chief complaint is a harsh productive cough and increased shortness of breath. And she’s still smoking, which is upsetting her daughter who has a young child who is bothered by the second-hand smoke.
Anne and Mary in an exam room
Anne: Hi, Mary. How are you feeling today?
Mary: Overall, I feel pretty healthy. I walk for about half an hour every single day. And I’ve been following the diet that the dietician suggested, watching what I eat. I’m proud of the fact that my diabetes has never been better controlled!
Anne: So far, so good. Is there anything that concerns you?
Mary: Yes. Lately I’ve been coughing so hard and having difficulty catching my breath which is causing me to feel like I might be having some twinges in my chest, and I’m scared to death I’m going to have another heart attack. I want to know what more I can do to prevent that from happening again.
Anne: I’d be happy to explore healthy options. To start, I’d like to ask you a few follow- up questions related to the history form you filled out in the waiting room. You’re still smoking?
Mary: (Sigh…) Yes, cigarettes are my one remaining vice. I’ve been smoking over 40 years. My parents smoked and they taught me how to light their cigarettes when I was 12!
Anne: How much are you smoking?
Mary: About a pack a day. That’s 20 cigarettes. I light up first thing in the morning. If I don’t, it’s all I think about. My body craves it. It is just so frustrating, especially since it is upsetting my daughter and son in law so much. I don’t know where I will go if they kick me out of their home.
Anne: I’m sure that is very upsetting to think about, Mary. Let me take a quick listen to you and then we can discuss some options that may be available to you.
Mary: Sure, that would be fine.
This is a discussion post. I will attached the video transcript that must be use to answer the questions

While viewing, reflect on what you have learned about tobacco use and the role that nurses and other interdisciplinary team members play in helping to assist tobacco users with quitting. While viewing, it is also important to keep in mind that tobacco users move through stages of change in the process of quitting. They move from pre-contemplation to contemplation, contemplation to preparation; preparation to abstinence; abstinence to maintenance. Every stage requires a different strategy by a nurse.
After watching the video, and reflecting on the information presented, address each of the following questions.
1. What are the common symptoms associated with an exacerbation of COPD?
2. What assessment techniques will you use to assess Mary?
3. Identify smoking strategies that would be appropriate for each of the encounters that Mary had with the nurse throughout the video that could have been used to assist Mary in quitting smoking.
4. Find a resource in your community that could assist Mary. Start by searching the Internet for your local health department’s website. What services are available to Mary? Briefly describe the services that the state quit line provides. Does it meet the 4 As? Is it accessible, acceptable, affordable, or available for Mary?
5. What will you do to follow-up on Mary’s smoking cessation process?
describe in a scholarly paper how you would organize and manage resources, including human resources, for a real problem of patient falls within your organization.
