Week Eleven Discussion (Chapter Sixteen)

Outlining Your Speech

In Chapter 16 of the textbook, we learn about how to construct a better persuasive speech. We also learn about the rhetorical proofs of ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS. Use that information for your discussion below.
Be as thorough and descriptive as possible in your response. Remember, the purpose of discussions is not a recitation of what the textbook says; the purpose is for you to take your knowledge and apply it directly to this course and yourself as a speaker.

Directions

Part One

For your Initial Post due by Friday, 11:59 PM:

  1. Hit the reply button, below.
  2. Choose TWO speech topics for your upcoming persuasive speech
  3. For those two topics, write how you would include ETHOS, PATHOS, and LOGOS for each one.

EXAMPLE (you will have to do two of these and of course there will be some similarities between the two):
TOPIC: I will be writing about why people should eat a more plant based diet.
ETHOS: I will dress formally for my presentation and present the information in a way to show my audience how much I care and how informative I am on the topic. By proving to the audience that I know what I’m talking about and how much I have prepared it will increase credibility. I will also talk about how long I have been practicing a mostly vegan lifestyle (but I’ll admit that I’m human and I occasionally get an In-N-Out burger).
PATHOS: I will appeal to emotion by starting with an anecdote about the negative effects that the carnivorous diet has on the climate, especially when more and more people are gaining access to affordable meat. I will also somehow mention an individual’s anecdote about cancer related to meat consumption.
LOGOS: FACTS! This speech will include some pathos but it will mostly be fact based. I plan on using mostly Peer-Reviewed research articles because it will make a stronger impact on the appeal to logic.
The two chosen topics would be universal care for all & Coronavirus pandemic has affected learning across the world.

DO YOU BELIEVE MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP ARE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT?
Please share your research, experience, and thoughts:  Briefly discuss your views of management and leadership. Do you believe they are the same or different? If you believe they are different, do you think that they have the same importance for the future of nursing? Do you feel that one is more important than the other? How can novice nurse-managers and administrators learn important management functions and develop leadership skills?  Should they?  Who today represents a “model” leader?  What is their distinction?

This assignment requires you to interview one person and requires an analysis of your interview experience.

Part I: Interview

Select a patient, a family member, or a friend to interview. Be sure to focus on the interviewee’s experience as a patient, regardless of whom you choose to interview.

Please review the following joint commission resource questions

*Who or what provides the patient with strength and hope?

*Does the patient use prayer in their life?

*How does the patient express their spirituality?

*How would the patient describe their philosophy of life?

*What type of spiritual/religious support does the patient desire?

*What is the name of the patient’s clergy, ministers, chaplains, pastor, rabbi?

*What does suffering mean to the patient?

*What does dying mean to the patient?

*What are the patient’s spiritual goals?

*Is there a role of church/synagogue in the patient’s life?

*How does your faith help the patient cope with illness?

*How does the patient keep going day after day?

*What helps the patient get through this health care experience?

*How has illness affected the patient and his/her family?

All these will provide some guidelines for creating spiritual assessment tools for evaluating the spiritual needs of patients. Using this resource and any other guidelines/examples that you can find, create your own tool for assessing the spiritual needs of patients.

Your spiritual needs assessment survey must include about 7 questions that can be answered during the interview. During the interview, document the interviewee’s responses.

The transcript should include the questions asked and the answers provided. Be sure to record the responses during the interview by taking detailed notes. Omit specific names and other personal information through which the interviewee can be determined.

Part II: Analysis

Write a 500-750 word analysis of your interview experience. Be sure to exclude specific names and other personal information from the interview. Instead, provide demographics such as sex, age, ethnicity, and religion. Include the following in your response:

1. What went well?

2. Were there any barriers or challenges that inhibited your ability to complete the assessment tool? How would you address these in the future or change your assessment to better address these challenges?

3. How can this tool assist you in providing appropriate interventions to meet the needs of your patient?

4. Did you discover that illness and stress amplified the spiritual concern and needs of your interviewee? Explain your answer with examples.

Submit both the transcript of the interview and the analysis of your results. This should be submitted as one document. The interview transcript is not part of  the word count for analysis.

Selecting a Framework
Selecting a Framework Program Transcript
[MUSIC PLAYING]
Have you ever had that same inexplicable event happen to you over and over again but still never found a way to explain it? Throughout their practice, nurses may encounter phenomena that they cannot fully explain. If nurses want to understand such phenomena, they may decide to conduct research on it. NURS 6052 Essay Assignment Papers – Role of theory and models in research and evidence-based practice.
Take Rachel, for example. Rachel is the manager of a group of nurses in a nursing home, and she has noticed that the stress and fatigue levels of the nurses under her direction vary considerably. She knows that the patients and caseloads of the nurses do not significantly differ, and those who seem most affected by stress include both new and veteran nurses. Rachel considers these phenomena and decides to further investigate them through research. But before she can begin gathering data, she must first select a framework to guide her research.
A framework is the overall conceptual basis or rationale for a study. There are two types of frameworks that can be used to guide research– theoretical and conceptual. Theoretical frameworks are used for research studies related to a specific theory. A theory is a formalized explanation of how phenomena are interrelated. NURS 6052 Essay Assignment Papers – Role of theory and models in research and evidence-based practice.
Conceptual frameworks, on the other hand, are used for studies that are not rooted in a particular theory. This does not mean that conceptual frameworks are not based on existing knowledge and evidence. In fact, many conceptual frameworks are based on conceptual models, which are abstract methods of thinking about human beings, the environment, health, nursing, and so on.
There are many methods researchers use to identify a suitable framework for the phenomenon they are studying. Conceptualizing or targeting the specific factors related to the phenomena is one such method. In addition, researchers can peruse databases and printed materials for similar studies, search for established. NURS 6052 Essay Assignment Papers – Role of theory and models in research and evidence-based practice
Selecting a Framework
frameworks that take a position on factors related to the phenomena, and confer with people who are familiar with many theories and models, such as professors, advisers, and supervisors.
For example, in Rachel’s study on stress and fatigue in the nursing home setting, the factors include the nurses, their stress levels, and how they respond to or cope with stress. Rachel uses these factors to conduct searches for similar research studies on stress and caregiver burdens. The information presented in these studies allows her to determine that the most appropriate framework for her study is Theory of Stress and Coping, developed by Lazarus and Folkman.
This theory provides an explanation for how different people deal with stress and how they develop and learn coping strategies. This theory gives Rachel a theoretical framework to begin crafting her research questions and plotting how to carry out her research. NURS 6052 Essay Assignment Papers – Role of theory and models in research and evidence-based practice.
It should also be noted that frameworks evolve as more research is conducted. Each new layer of research that uses a particular framework helps inform future studies using that same framework. But with the initial framework selection firmly in place, the stage is set for a successful research project that may benefit patients everywhere. NURS 6052 Essay Assignment Papers – Role of theory and models in research and evidence-based practice.
Discuss the applicability of the theory of culture care diversity and universality to discover nursing knowledge and provide culturally congruent care. Take into consideration the current trends of consumers of health care, cultural diversity factors, and changes in medical and nursing school curricula. The following are examples of trends you may use as a thread to start your discussion:
a. The importance of transcultural nursing knowledge in an increasingly diverse world
b. The growth of lay support groups to provide information and sharing of experiences and support for clients, families, and groups experiencing chronic, terminal, or life-threatening illnesses or treatment modalities from diverse or similar cultures
c. Cultural values, beliefs, health practices, and research knowledge in undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula across the life span
d. Inclusion of alternative or generic care in nursing curricula, such as medicine men, Native American healers, curers, and herbalists in the Southwest and selected substantiated Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine methods shown to be effective for the treatment of both acute and chronic diseases
e. The increased access to health care information from the Internet and the growing number of books, audio recordings, and video recordings published on health maintenance, alternative medicine, herbs, vitamins, minerals, and over-the-counter medications and preparations
f. Spiraling health care costs; use of health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations (PPO), or internal plan provider lists; lack of health insurance; increased reliance on self-diagnosis, treatment, and care; and increased availability of diagnostic kits for home-based self-diagnostic testing
g. Problems related to cultural conflicts, stress, pain, and cultural imposition practices
h. Increased suspiciousness and mistrust or distrust of cultural, religious, and political groups because of increased terrorist activities worldwide
