Drama Essay: Character Analysis
By the due date assigned, submit your three-paragraph essay as a Microsoft Word attachment. You will complete this assignment using one of the following plays in your eBook, Portable Literature: “The Cuban Swimmer,” “The Brute,”  or one of the 10-minute plays from the Week 3 Discussion.
Directions
Read the plays listed above, and choose one for the basis of your essay. You are writing an analysis of one of the characters in the play. You may use the brainstorming questions below to generate ideas, or you may refer to the Week 3 discussion prompt for a refresher on ways character is revealed. It is fine to continue with your character analysis that you started this week in the discussion area for this essay assignment.
Develop a short essay of at least three paragraphs and 500 words. In your response, be sure that you have the following: an introductory paragraph with a clear thesis statement, at least one body paragraph with supporting reasons, examples, and quotations from the play, and a concluding paragraph. The thesis statement should represent your main argument analyzing the character you have chosen. Use APA style for formatting the paper and for in-text citations and end references.
Brainstorming Questions
Select a character. What does he or she want? What is the conflict this character encounters? How does he or she attempt to get this desire? What prevents him or her from achieving it? What is the resolution by the end of the play for this character? Does the character change by the end of the play?
The Thesis Statement
To develop your thesis statement, choose two or three descriptive words to define your character. From these words, what main point could you make about the character in your essay? Once you have your thesis statement, make notes and choose supporting evidence (quotations and examples from the play).
Reminders

  • Use APA style, and include a title page, proper font and spacing, in-text citations, and a separate references page.
  • Do not use any outside sources to complete this response; rely only on your own insights.
  • Quoted material from the play should not exceed 25% of the essay.
  • You may exceed the minimum word and paragraph count.

****500 Word Discussion*****According to a recent World Health Organization report excessive drinking causes more than four percent of deaths worldwide more than AIDS tuberculosis or violence. Due to increasing incomes in heavily populated countries in Africa and Asia including India and South Africa binge drinking has become a problem in many developed countries as more money is being spent on alcoholic beverages. Moreover policies which control alcohol are weak and remain a low priority for most governments despite drinking’s heavy toll on society causing road accidents violence disease child neglect and job absenteeism.WHOs Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health states that approximately 2.5 million people die each year from alcohol related causes. It further reports that the harmful use of alcohol is especially fatal for younger age groups and is the world’s leading risk factor for death among males aged 15-59. Worldwide statistics accounts for about 11 percent of drinkers who have weekly heavy episodic drinking occasions with men outnumbering women by four to one. Men consistently engage in hazardous drinking at much higher levels than women in all regions investigated. In the WHO’s first report on alcohol since 2004 alcohol has been a causal factor in 60 types of diseases and injuries. Increasing consumptions has been linked to cirrhosis of the liver epilepsy poisonings road traffic accidents violence and several types of cancer including cancers of the colorectum breast larynx and liver.Despite repeated health warnings from doctors and public health professionals the global health burden of alcohol consumption continues to rise and it shows there are no signs of it slowing. The economic and health implications posed by alcohol are often overlooked in favor of its social benefits and it is precisely this fact that makes alcohol such a dangerous commodity.Question: Discuss the social complexity (ies) of alcohol as a strong risk factor for disease transmission such as HIV/AIDS in the context of global health.

Discussion: Feminist and Social Justice Theories
Feminist and social justice theories may not immediately come to mind when considering the profession of school counseling. Furthermore, feminist theory is often mistaken for an approach that is exclusive to women, and social justice theory to the conventions of social equality, when in fact, their principles are largely based on concepts that are consistent with counseling and applicable to all populations including strengths-based, holistic, client-centered, and advocacy.
A closer examination suggests that feminist and social justice theories seem applicable to the school setting. This is particularly true when working with oppressed or potentially marginalized student populations that face issues related to disabilities, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic status, or race/ethnicity, to name a few. Advocacy is rooted in feminist and social justice theory. The professional school counselor is positioned well to advocate for students who might otherwise experience oppression. This oppression negatively impacts the student’s school experience, thus preventing the ignition of his or her full potential.
For this week’s Discussion, you analyze the use of feminist and social justice theories in school counseling.
Post by Day 3 a description of your understanding of feminist and social justice theories. Then, explain how the use of feminist and social justice theories in school counseling might benefit a student. Provide a specific example and justify your response.

With the powerpoint slides please include narrative notes.

  • consult the Grading Rubric (under Course Resources) to make sure you have included everything necessary; and
  • utilize spelling and grammar check to minimize errors.
  • Submit to and review results of Turnitin. Purdue University Global Student Conduct policy as it relates to plagiarism will be adhered to in this course.

  • display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics; and
  • utilize APA 7th edition formatting.
  • Identify the types of errors that you make most often and what strategy you will use to minimize making this type of error in the future.
  • State what you have learned by analyzing your mistakes.

Why do we make mistakes?   The old adage that “nobody is perfect” is certainly true but we can LEARN from our mistakes.   Start to analyze your mistakes.  In this analysis consider these categories for your mistakes.
1.         Conceptual Error:  The error is due to a misunderstanding of a concept.  Name the concept, at least to yourself.  For example, the concept might be finding the absolute value of a number.  The process of naming the concept will help you to find additional information about that concept and strengthen your understanding.
2.         Calculation Error:  In your judgment, you understood the concept or concepts involved but you made a miscalculation.  Name the type of calculation error.  For example, a type of calculation error might be that you applied the wrong rule for adding signed numbers or that you rounded the number incorrectly.
3.         Transcription Error:  The error resulted from miscopying of the problem or miscopying a portion of the problem from one step to another. Identify the transcription error. For example, you may have copied the wrong problem or copied part of one problem and part of another.  Another common transcription error is to leave out a number or sign as you copy from one line to the next.
4.         Interpretation Error. We answer the wrong question or do not answer all the questions. We often find ourselves anticipating what a problem is asking us to do without carefully reading the instructions.  For example, you might be asked to give the new amount in a percent increase problem instead of just the amount of increase.
By increasing your awareness of the type of mistakes that you make the most often, you will begin to make them less often

Discussion 2: Becoming a Lifelong Advocate

It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act.
—Tenzin Gyatso

As this course comes to a close, consider and reflect on how you can become a lifelong advocate for social change in your future social work practice. As a motivated policy advocate and social worker, your actions in your chosen profession will reflect your motivation to help relatively powerless, disenfranchised groups of people improve their resources, their opportunities, and their quality of life.
In this Discussion, you reflect upon your responsibility as a social worker, politically and professionally.

By Day 4

Post your thoughts on this question: As a social worker, what is your responsibility to engage in political action? Identify an area of social welfare where social work policy advocacy is needed.
