Contemporary Culture/Diversity News Journal:
Throughout the semester, you are expected to keep up with current events in focused on the issues of culture anddiversity as it relates to business studies.   As part of your daily reading of contemporary culture  and diversity news (via the Financial Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Detroit News, Detroit Free Press, CNN, etc.), you are to select a  singlebusiness-related  topic  of  culture/diversity    interest.    Collect  (electronically)  and read  (approximately)  one  to  three  articles  per  week;  all  on  your  pre-approved  topic.  Potential topics might include national cultures, regional cultures, sub-cultures, or groups.  Examples might consider diversity in the traditional media and/or social media, movies, in the workplace, etc. across culture realms or within a single culture or subculture.
6Each journal entry should include a brief summary/analysis (1 to 2 sentences, hand-written or electronic notes are ok); this process will help you write your final paper.  Be prepared to share on a daily basis something from your journal with the larger class or class group (the   sharing   of   contemporary business-related   culture/diversitynews   readings   will comprise part of your participation grade).  Email me a compilation of your articles (really, just your links) with brief commentary on September17andOctober15.  It  is  your  responsibility  to  email  me  the  article  links. Before turning in your completed Contemporary News Journal, write a summary analysis of your topic (1-2 paragraphs) andhow it connects to the course(4-5 paragraphs) for a total length of 2 full pages (double-spaced typed).
                                                                  Investigative Efforts (Discussion 1)
To fully understand what kinds of investigative efforts are being made by police to address real-world problems, select two individual problem solving guides from the Problem Specific Guides (Links to an external site.) and assess what police are using to succeed in their investigative and problem-solving efforts. Summarize then analyze both of the problem guides you selected, focusing on the positive aspects of the research. How can this information be utilized and applied in a law enforcement agency?
Officer Stress (Discussion 2)
The police work environment itself can and does have adverse effects on police officers. It creates stress, which may be defined as a force that is external in nature that causes both physical and emotional strain upon the body. The late Hans Selye, who is known as “the father of stress research,” defined stress as a nonspecific response of a body to demands placed on it.
To help officers deal with stress and its effects, a comprehensive wellness program is needed that should include five elements: (1) physical fitness, (2) stress management, (3) psychological and mental health, (4) nutrition and dietary-related behaviors, and (5) alcohol/chemical dependency.
Police agencies need a comprehensive wellness program to assist officers in coping with stress, but if that fails or is absent, an employee assistance program (EAP) should be available to help officers to cope with alcohol and substance abuse, psychological problems such as depression, or family management problems.
Read the Employee Assistance Program (Links to an external site.) and address the following:
Why has the University of Oklahoma Police Department established an EAP, and how does the program work?
What portions of the EAP presented did you find particularly helpful? Why?
What portions should be expanded? Why?
In your opinion, do you think either a comprehensive wellness program or an EAP helps with officer stress? Why or why not?
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length.
For this week I want you to step into the role of the person who is responsible for managing the risks faced by your organization. As a reminder, from the Module Presentations and the textbook, there are 4 basic strategic options for managing Risk: Choose 1 or a combination of strategies to best address the risk
Re-state your Threat and the Vulnerability to the Threat, and briefly explain your strategy to manage the Risk. Choose one of more of the options below(there are no wrong answers, simply explain/support your strategy)
1.Avoid Risk: Prevent the occurrence of the impact (examples: increased security, preventative maintenance, relocate assets,…etc.)
2.Transfer Risk: Transfer the cost of the impact (example: purchase insurance to cover potential losses, or contractually transfer asset ownership,…etc.)
3.Mitigate Risk: Implement strategies to minimize the impact (examples: perform audits, develop response plans, create asset redundancy, develop a COOP,…etc.)
4.Accept Risk: Do nothing and accept the potential impact (ironically, sometimes this may be the correct management option)

Instructions for this Assignment
Question #2 Chapter 16 Managerial Decision Exercise:
You have recently accepted the position of director for a full-service retirement home that has three components. The first component is for retired individuals and married couples who can still manage on their own but appreciate the amenities such as medical care and having other residents that they interact with through planned activities. The second is for residents who are still relatively healthy but do need assistance for specific tasks such as mobility and the like. The third section is for individuals with chronic health issues and palliative care patients.
You have learned during the interview process that the facility has performance and morale issues and that the previous director had a rigid structure, did not allow workers from different roles to interact, and wanted all decisions to be directed to her. This has led to dramatic staff turnover and a larger number of empty units compared to other facilities.
As the incoming new director, you will need to address the staff, and your new assistant asks whether you would like to address the staff in one large room or in smaller meeting rooms with employees from the different functional units. She also asks how to handle the workers who are from different shifts. Make your communication decisions, and write up an opening statement to make to the employees before you open the meeting to questions.  Be sure to include in your response paper reasoning behind your decisions and at least a clear linkage to the the following learning objective: Identify the most effective modes of communication based on audience (LO2).
***Include in your response-your opening statement as well as the thought process that you followed to get to your opening statement.
