Reflect on your nursing practice for a moment. If you could wipe out one illness, what would it be? How would that impact not just an individual patient, but your entire patient population? What would be the long-term benefits of eliminating that one illness?
The eradication of smallpox by 1979 provides an excellent example of this scenario. This eradication came about as a result of global collaborative efforts involving many countries and organizations, as well as the application of epidemiologic methods. In spite of high initial financial costs, it is estimated that millions of dollars continue to be saved around the world each year as a result of the eradication of this disease.
The eradication of smallpox illustrates the rich history of epidemiology and demonstrates the cost/benefits and implications of improving health at the population level. The application of epidemiologic methods and principles to other critical population health issues continues to play an essential role in improving health and health outcomes.
For this Discussion, you will identify a current population health problem, and you will examine how, and if, the problem is being addressed through the application of epidemiologic principles. You will also discuss the cost-effectiveness of dealing with the problem at the population level.
To prepare:
- Review the Learning Resources, focusing on the smallpox epidemic of the 1960s and 1970s and how health organizations applied principles of epidemiology to eradicate this disease. (See attached file)
- In light of this example, consider the cost effectiveness of addressing smallpox at the population level.
- Using the Learning Resources, research a current population health problem (local or global). Select one on which to focus for this Discussion.
- Think about how principles of epidemiology are being applied—or could be applied—to address the problem.
- What lessons from the use of epidemiology in the eradication of smallpox might be applicable to this selected problem? What are the financial benefits of addressing this issue at the population level as opposed to the individual level?
By tomorrow Wednesday 02/28/18 by 12pm, write a minimum of 550 words in APA format with a minimum of THREE scholarly references from the list of required readings below. Include the level one headers as numbered below:
Post a cohesive response that addresses the following:
1) Briefly summarize your selected population health problem and describe how principles of epidemiology are being applied—or could be applied—to address the problem.
2) Are there any lessons learned from the use of epidemiology in the eradication of smallpox that can be applied to your selected problem?
3) Evaluate the cost effectiveness of addressing this health problem at the population level versus the individual level.

What is the difference between a healthcare organization’s business and strategic plan?
UncategorizedThe business plan of a healthcare organization describes the purpose of the HCO and lends structure to its organizational goals. The strategic plan is used as a directional guide; in other words, how the organization will fulfill its purpose and put ideas into action. The strategic plan also prioritizes the organization’s resources as a means to fulfill the business plan. Simply put, the business plan is the “what,” and the strategic plan is the “how.”
To prepare for this assignment, read Chapters 1 and 2 in the course text as well as the required article by Varkey and Bennett (2010). You may also want to review the recommended article by Williams (2008). For your initial post, answer the following questions in the discussion forum:
What is the difference between a healthcare organization’s business and strategic plan? Be sure to include the purpose of each plan and how they relate to one another.
Why is it important for a healthcare organization to develop a strategic plan?
Support your initial post with in-text citations and references for at least two scholarly sources.
Early-Onset Schizophrenia
Nursing HomeworksWeek 9: Early-Onset Schizophrenia
Early-onset schizophrenia is a rare and severe mental illness in which children interpret reality abnormally. There are a range of problems with cognitive functioning, behavior, and emotions. Perceptions may be distorted and children or their parents may report that they have difficulty distinguishing reality. This is a diagnosis that is difficult to confirm in the early stages.
This week, you compare evidence-based treatment plans for adults versus children diagnosed with schizophrenia. You analyze the legal and ethical issues involved with forcing patients with early-onset schizophrenia to take medications for the disorder. You also complete a Decision Tree concerning children with psychotic disorders.

Assignment 1: Early Onset Schizophrenia
Children and adolescents with schizophrenia have more difficulty functioning in academic or work settings, and significant impairment usually persists into adulthood. They may have speech or language disorders and in some cases borderline intellectual functioning. These individuals are more likely to complete suicide attempts or die from other accidental causes. Schizophrenia is characterized by positive and negative symptoms. Positive symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and behavior disturbance. Negative symptoms include blunted affect and attention, apathy, and lack of motivation and social interest.
In this Assignment, you compare treatment plans for adults diagnosed with schizophrenia with treatment plans for children and adolescents diagnosed with schizophrenia. You also consider the legal and ethical issues involved in medicating children diagnosed with schizophrenia.

UncategorizedCompetency 2 Assessment
Instructions: This Competency Assessment will allow you to apply concepts of population-based practice and community as partners.
For this course Competency Assessment, you will need to conduct a community assessment using assessment and evaluation tools, identify principles of community-based participatory research, and describe data sources using mixed methods for evaluation in a particular community context.
Many of you have traveled and participated in international/global immersion experiences, or a local practice where you may be an outsider (not a member of the community for whom you are caring). Others of you may aspire to practice in international settings. Also, in this unit, you have been introduced to the idea of genetics/genomic risks.
For this assignment, submit your assignment in which you do the following:
1. State two issues that may be of concern among vulnerable populations and possible solutions to combat such issues.
Please Note!
My 2 Vulnerable Populations are:
a. Children of low-income families
b. The Mentally disabled
Emphasis should be focused on the following topics:
· Increase school dropout.
· Use of Drugs.
· Low quality of health/Poor health outcomes/Inadequate healthcare/ poor healthcare
· Increase risk of chronic health conditions such as diabetes.
· Increase mental health needs
2. Succinctly describe the relationship between health literacy and population health outcomes.
3. What has been your experiences understanding 1) and 2).
4. As you process some of the ethical issues and concerns about ethical engagement highlighted in the readings and media offerings for this unit
Please identify how you will ensure your engagement is helpful rather than well intended but ineffective (or worse).
· Submit your reflection by the last day of this unit.
(min. 5 pages- not including cover page or references)
Studies of parenting find that low family income and maternal hardship hamper children’s cognitive and social competence. 14 Moreover, parents in poor living environments have difficulty nurturing and protecting their children, increasing the likelihood that children will gravitate into activities and peer associations leading to school dropout, premature sexual experience, use of drugs, and other deviant behavior. 15 Family deprivations also increase the probability of abuse and neglect of children, who then seek to escape the household early, associate with inappropriate peers, form tenuous sexual partnerships, have early pregnancies, and often replicate the pattern of inadequate parenting they experienced as children. 16
Recommendation
Payments to health plans and providers should promote quality health care and improved health and functional status for all patients, including vulnerable populations. Adjusting payments for differences in health or functional status is especially important for Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers that have significant enrollment of individuals with chronic illness or disability so that health plans and providers have an incentive for developing innovative models of care that best serve these individuals
Additional investment should be provided for developing, evaluating, and supporting effective health care delivery models designed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable populations. The lack of evidence of effective approaches to enhance the health and functional status of persons with chronic illness or disabilities suggests the need for significant additional investment in research and innovation for health care and rehabilitation programs serving these patients. In addition, telemedicine and similar innovations, incentives for health care professionals to practice in underserved areas, and enhanced availability of prehospital emergency services should be assessed as approaches for improving the access to care of those facing geographic barriers to appropriate care.
