The Final Project should demonstrate an understanding of the reading assignments, class discussions, your own research and the application of new knowledge.  It should utilize previous skills developed in foundational health care courses and apply them within the context and viewpoint of  a health care administrator and their role in managing health and human services.

For the Final Project, select one of the following topics and conduct scholarly and professional research while integrating the course’s learning outcomes to address a selected topic:

  • Research specific leadership and management traits and theories necessary for managing a multidisciplinary and multicultural health care organization to promote organizational effectiveness.
  • Present how strategic planning, performance improvement, and information systems are interrelated and fundamental to the delivery of quality health care.
  • Examine the financial characteristics of health care delivery along with managing costs, revenues, and human resources.
  • Analyze ethical and legal concepts, including specific federal regulations, required of health care organizations to ensure the delivery of high quality health care that protects patient safety.

Research Requirements

Academic research and papers must meet certain standards of quality that are recognized by the academic community.  What constitutes quality academic research?

  • The use of primary (original), credible sources written by experts in the field of study.
  • Ensuring secondary sources are supported by research in primary sources.
  • Making sure all research is relevant and that material used is pertinent to the area of study.
  • In graduate work, the use of peer-reviewed journal articles (journal articles reviewed by recognized experts in the relevant field of study) is required.
  • Keep in mind that educational websites may be appropriate, in some cases, but should be evaluated carefully.

The Ashford University Library offers many excellent databases and other resources to assist you in conducting scholarly research.

What sources are not acceptable for academic research and referencing?

  • Encyclopedias
  • Dictionaries
  • Wikipedia, other wikis, or blogs
  • Websites and other sources that do not provide quality researched materials (e.g., they do not use credible sources to support the information in the document).

All research must reflect professional academic protocol and must be documented according to APA standards as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Creating the Final Project

You may choose to present your research is the form of an eight- to ten-page research paper (excluding title and reference pages) or a comprehensive 10- to 15-slide PowerPoint presentation (excluding title and reference slides) with detailed speaker notes.  In either case, the content of the assignment must include each of the elements listed below:

  1. IntroductionDescribe the issue.  Include why it was selected, the perspective of your approach to the issue, and the scope of the paper or presentation.  In essence, describe in this area what is being covered.  Be specific and to the point.  This is an important part of the project as it engages the reader and sets the scope of the research.
  2. Statement of the Issue to be InvestigatedDescribe why the topic is a relevant problem or issue.  It is important to provide literature sources in support of the importance of the need/issue/topic.  For example, if you are interested in researching the issue of nutrition in early childhood brain development among American children – cite literature identifying the scope of the problem (for example:  the number of malnourished children, the implications of malnourishment on learning and brain development; and long term implications).  Overall, this section should detail what makes this topic or issue so important that you are spending time and energy researching it.  What is the impact of the problem if nothing is done to correct the situation?
  3. Research SourcesThis section documents the relevant research reflecting the topic of the Final Project.  In this section, paraphrased narratives of the actual research studies are reported and should represent the current research related to the topic area.  In general, your research should:
    1. Identify your chosen topic and what has happened in the specific research of the topic (describe the study, sample, findings, important points from the discussion in the research article, and any variables that may influence the findings of the research).
    2. Discuss any key elements of the topic that may be instructional, legal, ethical, social, etc. (what is projected if nothing is done? what has been tried?).  Support this section with relevant resource citations.
    3. Provide an analysis of the research articles used, including: explaining what was done in the study, what the target population was, information about who did the research (the author), what was found with the study, and any implications of the findings to your topic or issue.
  4. ConclusionIn this section, provide a general, but thorough summary reviewing:  why the topic was selected; the problem or issue briefly stated; the approach that was used; findings; and solutions.  In this section, the reader or audience should have a good idea of what the researcher did and what was found.
  5. ReferencesThe references should be listed on a new page or slide and must be formatted according to APA requirements as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.  You must use a minimum of six to eight scholarly sources.
  1. Introduce yourself to your peers and instructor. Share any relevant personal and/or professional information.
  2. Tell us about your experience with public speaking:
    • Is this your first course?
    • How comfortable are you with public speaking?
    • What are two of your speaking strengths?
    • What are two speaking challenges that you have?
  3. Discuss your goals in regards to the content of this course:
    • What do you want to learn about public speaking?
    • What skills do you hope to gain?
    • How will this course help you in your personal, professional, and educational life?
  4. The Bible clearly describes the importance of clear and compassionate communication within its teachings in Ephesians 4:29 (opens in new window).
    • As you consider your speaking style, how does your faith fit into this profile?
    • Does the Biblical imperative in terms of communication influence your priorities in effective speaking?
    • If personal faith does not fit into your priorities, what does?
    • What motivates you to be a better speaker?

For this assignment, we will be working on understanding the customer service experience offered by a hypothetical airline. When support is required, a customer initiates contact with the airline, either over the phone or using an online platform. Once connected, an agent of the airline works with the customer to understand the problem. When the interaction is complete, the agent creates records about the case. This includes the overall category of the issue along with whether the problem was resolved.
The airline would like to better understand the differences between support provided over the phone and online. With different types of interactions, the agents require different kinds of training, and the costs and resources are different in each modality. With this in mind, the airline is quite interested in comparing the quality of each type of service with regard to how well the cases can be resolved. They are also generally interested in improving their customer service and better understanding the experience.
In this assignment, we will be working with the information provided and consider the question of how to best understand the customer service experience.

Data

For each call, the following characteristics were measured:

  • category: Each case was classified according to the type of service that was requested by the customer.
  • service: This indicates whether the support was provided by phone or online.
  • waiting.time.minutes: This records how long the customer waited to begin interacting with an agent.
  • session.minutes: This records how long the customer interacted with the agent.
  • customer.demeanor: This records the agent’s perception of the customer based on the tone of the conversation.
  • resolved: This measures whether the agent was able to solve the customer’s main concern in the interaction.

Instructions

Based upon the information above and the data provided, please answer the following questions. When numeric answers are requested, a few sentences of explanation should also be provided. Please show your code for any calculations performed.

Assessment

You will be assessed on the accuracy and thoughtfulness of your responses.

  • Questions 1-20: 5 points apiece

Questions

  1. What is the primary research question that will help the airline? Make sure to state this in terms of a measurable quantity.
  2. What kind of research study can be conducted with the available data?
  3. Are there any drawbacks to the kind of study you plan to undertake?
  4. If you could devise your own experiment, what would you do differently?
  5. Perform a statistical test that would analyze the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. In this test, do not consider any other variables. What would you conclude from this test?
  6. Apart from the independent and dependent variables, how should we think about the other variables in the data, and what would be the best way to consider them in the analysis?
  7. What would be an appropriate way to incorporate these other measured variables into an analysis of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables?
  8. Create a model that estimates the effect of the independent variable on the dependent variable while incorporating the other measured variables. Show the estimates and any measures of significance.
  9. Are there any other concerns with regard to this study and its design?
  10. Now imagine that the conclusion you drew from analyzing the data is actually incorrect. In fact, the real effect of the independent variable is exactly the opposite of what you demonstrated. How would you explain what happened?
  11. The customer service organization is also interested in understanding the quality of its work and the overall satisfaction of the customer. At the conclusion of the call, there is an opportunity to conduct a survey. What is the best way to implement this idea?
  12. What are some possible topics that you might ask about? Select three potential areas and briefly discuss why these are important to gather information about.
  13. For each of the three areas that you selected above, design a survey question. Keep in mind that the design should be appropriate for the setting. Provide the question, the possible answers, and the meaning of the answers.
  14. In this setting, how many questions would you ask the customer? Explain your answer.
  15. The airline has a larger number of questions that it would like to ask. What would be your strategy for gathering all of this information? Explain your answer.
  16. In this context, what are the advantages of a longer survey, and what are the benefits for a shorter survey? Explain your answers.
  17. If the airline’s managers are adamant about asking all of the preferred questions, what are some alternatives to this automated survey?
  18. Which customers would be more likely to participate in the automated survey after the customer service call, and which customers would be less likely?
  19. How reliable would you consider the information that comes from the automated survey to be?
  20. What else could you recommend to the managers of the airline’s customer service center to help them achieve the stated goal of understanding the quality of its work and the overall satisfaction of the customer? Provide a number of strategic recommendations that are actionable, measurable, and amenable to experimentation.

 Improving Corrections Facilities
Go to the Department of Corrections’ website for your state, and research two of your state’s correctional facilities. Next, use the Internet and Strayer University Online Library (https://research.strayer.edu) to research the budgetary constraints that correctional officials must adhere to in order to operate correctional facilities.
Write a 4-to 5-page paper in which you:

  • Identify and discuss at least two diversion programs and determine whether the diversion programs are only beneficial to offenders charged with misdemeanors and non-violent felonies or whether they are also beneficial to offenders charged with felonies and violent crimes. Discuss whether or not the two correctional facilities that you researched would benefit from diversion programs. Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Discuss the pros and cons of privatized correctional facilities and discuss whether or not privatized correctional facilities are better alternatives for reaching the goal of preparing inmates for reentry into society. Support your position with one example from within the last three years to support your position of the better correctional facility alternative.
  • Correctional officials are tasked with maintaining public safety with reduced resources while maintaining effective operations. The targets of cost reductions typically include the following:  staffing, inmate medical and mental health services, and inmate/offender supervision. With this in mind, recommend a cost reduction strategy to reduce cost while maintaining public safety and effective operations (i.e. targeted reductions, business practice changes, the use of new technology, reduction in inmate population, or community supervision). Provide a rationale for your response.
  • Use at least four peer-reviewed sources. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
  • This course requires that citations and references follow the Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than others Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Recommend improvements to selected areas of corrections.
  • Analyze various issues in corrections, including effective community corrections programs, probation and parole, and reentry strategies.
  • Analyze the operational components of prisons, jails, and alternative correctional placements.
  • Propose specific components of an institutional facility model based on effective management policies and procedures for a specified group of inmates.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in correctional facility policies.
  • Write clearly and concisely about correctional facility policies using proper writing mechanics.
Theories & Conceptual Models
Theories, conceptual models, and practice research are the cornerstones of the nursing career. Nursing theories guide to research and improve nursing practice, which influences the healthiness and value of patients’ lives. Effective nursing practice needs to apply skills, caring, knowledge, and art to deliver care to the patients in a considerate, effective, and efficient manner. There are numerous theories and conceptual models used in advanced nursing practice. Nursing theories offer a foundational knowledge of care concepts that enable individuals in the advanced nursing practice to articulate evidence that validates their practice methods (Smith & Parker, 2015).  Nursing conceptual models provide a way for nurses to examine what they do and offer a patient assessment framework. In other words, nursing conceptual models entail related concepts and ideologies applied by nurse researchers in studies: they offer a mutual meaning to basic nursing concepts.
Theories and Conceptual Models for use in The Advanced Nursing Practice
Grand nursing theories, middle-range nursing theories, and practice-level nursing theories play a significant role in advanced nursing practice. Usually, grand nursing theories are complicated, abstract, and broad in scope. As such, they need detailed research for clarification. It is vital to mention that grand nursing theories arise from the nurse theorist’s experience and offer a general framework for nursing ideas on components such as environment, health, and people. Examples of the grand nursing models comprise Neuman’s systems model and Levine’s conservation model.
Unlike the grand nursing theories, the middle-range theories narrow down into specific nursing areas. It is also vital to mention that Middle-range theories emerge from the theories of similar disciplines, research, and nursing practice (Brandão et al. 2017). Examples of mid-range theories include Mishel’s model of uncertainty in illness, Kolcaba’s comfort model, and Roy’s adaptation approach (Guan et al., 2020). Practice-level nursing theories are also significant theories in advanced nursing practice. The theories narrow their focus to specific concepts about a defined patient populace and a specified duration.
The three previously discussed nursing theories help define what advanced practice nurses do and why they do it.  The theories are vital in advanced nursing practice because they help shape the delivery of patient care. Without the theories, the nursing practice would lack a linear focus. Again, the three previously discussed approaches are used in the advanced nursing practice to shape facilities’ healthcare delivery strategies in a manner that aligns with a range of expected outcomes. While the grand theories establish a broader framework, the middle-range and practice level approaches enable the governance of certain types of nurses or healthcare situations (Smith & Parker, 2015). It is essential to note the three nursing theories can only help provide high-quality healthcare if the advanced practice nurses are knowledgeable and skilled enough to work within their parameters efficiently.
It is vital to note that nursing models’ central concepts are health, person, environment, and nursing (de Brito et al., 2017).  In this case, a person is the receiver of the nursing action while the environment is the recipients surrounding. Health is the patient’s illness or wellness state, while nursing refers to the nurses’ actions on behalf of the patient. Nurses use nursing conceptual models to deliver comprehensive, collaborative, and holistic care. Regardless of the nurses’ specialization, nursing theories and conceptual models create guidelines for both specific and general nursing practices by helping the nurses understand their role and purpose in a healthcare setting.
