Running head: NURSING SHORTAGE 1
NURSING SHORTAGE 5

Nursing Shortage

Nursing Shortage

Demand for improved healthcare services has increased tremendously over the years thereby creating a shortage for nurses to take care of the patients. The primary obstacle facing healthcare industry is constant changes in demography which has in turn pushed for an expansion of the working force and the period required to train new nurses (Bucha, Duffield & Jordan, 2015). Shortage of nurses has also brought up challenging values to the industry making most of the practitioners to ask themselves if they can take care of their patients when they are not enough in number. Perhaps, the primary reason for nurse’s shortage is the inability of schools enrolment of new students because of lack of nursing school faculties (Nardi, & Gyurko, 2013).

Setting

In intensive care units (ICUs) most nurses are exposed to a lot of stress. According to Rosseter (2012) primary reason for nurse’s turnover in intensive care units is their inability to counter stress associated with working in the department. On top of that, the long hours and the amount of stress also reduce nurse’s cognitive skills. World Health Organization, for instance, has given several detailed reports regarding nurse shortages in ICUs of several countries around the globe (Stoddart & Evans, 2017). The report goes further to show that staff levels and the working conditions have been the primary reasons for nursing shortages in ICUs.

Description

Intensive care unit department requires nurses to work for long hours; it is noisy and hectic since it bombards people with all different kinds of stimuli. Nursing in ICU is described as demanding since most of the activities is high risk since patients are often very sick and fighting for their lives (Urden, Stacy, & Lough, 2017). Advancement in technology has escalated the problem because it expects nurses to work very fast to help the ill by using hugely complex machines. This working setup has made most nurses dissatisfied and stressed thus making some resign or discourage other potential future nurses.

Impact

Nurses working in ICUs work for very long hours and in stressful conditions which can make them easily suffer from injuries or fatigue. In such scenarios, they are prone to making mistakes which can quickly lead to a patient in critical condition losing their lives or reduce the quality of medical care. In other words, a single error in an ICU can cause alarmingly increase mortality rates in a country that has shortages of nurses in that crucial department (Sawatzky, Enns & Legare, 2015). It is imperative also to note that these uncertain working environments in ICUs promote individualism while at the same time reduce any chances of solidarity and formations of working groups. Nurses may, therefore, feel incompetent in their work making them disengage from what they are supposed to do.

Significance

Nurses are vital in every health organization especially when providing quality health care and educating patients about their health. Nurses mostly spend a lot of time with patients during their healing process hence creating some personal relationships along the way. When considering mood and attitude required during the healing process, nurses become even more important since they are trained to persevere and take good care of the ailing patients (Oulton, 2010). Their shortage is, therefore, a global concern that should be addressed in every health organization.

Solution

Solving nurse shortages in ICUs requires innovative and long-term remedies that can solve the problem once and for all. One such solution is increased wages for nurses to compensate them for working long and stressful hours (Bryant, 2017). Another solution is to improve nursing images by encouraging the already available nurses to freely communicate with the press about the benefits of nursing to a society. A good image can help in promoting the profession by encouraging others to join the industry.

  • Read the article Competent Educators of the 21st Century: Principles of Quality Pedagogy (Links to an external site.) (pages 28-31 specifically).
  • Compare and contrast the differences between classroom assessment strategies and standardized assessments, including the advantages and disadvantages of classroom assessments.
  • Choose one of the children from the Colorado Department of Education videos to observe. State explicitly which child you are using (name of child).
  • Based on the observation of that child, you will create a family-friendly resource that highlights their child’s strengths and needs that can be shared at your upcoming family conference. Your resource should include information from each of the documentation options below and should be family-friendly:
  • Narratives for parents
  • Indicators of dispositions
  • Developmental checklist
  • Explain specifically how your resource meets each of the indicators of quality for Principle 4.1 of the Competent Educators of the 21st Century: Principles of Quality Pedagogy and why creating effective assessment partnerships is important for leaders in the field of early childhood education.

Guided Response: Respond to at least two of your peers’ posts. As a leader in the field of early childhood education, provide feedback on the resource. What were some of the highlights of the resource? In what ways is this resource family friendly? Respectfully provide suggestions that would make this resource more family-friendly or in better alignment with Principle 4.1.
Though two replies is the basic expectation, for deeper engagement and learning, you are encouraged to provide responses to any comments or questions others have given to you. Remember, continuing to engage with peers and the instructor will further the conversation and provide you with opportunities to demonstrate your content expertise, critical thinking, and real-world experiences with this topic.

By Day 3
· Explain how you will terminate your group. Be specific in describing the strategies you would use.
· Provide at least 2 supports or resources that you would offer members in need of help outside the group.
· Explain how you would evaluate the group experience. (This can be a more subjective gauge of group satisfaction.)
· Explain how you would measure progress toward group goals. (This should be an objective measure of group outcomes, such as a rating scale, standardized instrument, or a questionnaire.)
Here is an example of a post that a classmate completed from my group. We are doing a group for Domestic Violence Survivors:
The group that has been established is a group of Domestic Violence survivors.  With this particular group it is important to not wait until the final session to prepare the participants for the end.  As the initial stage of a group is critical to the groups functioning preparing members for the end of the group is equally imperative.  Since dealing with a group that can be an emotionally charged group, to end the group I would educate the group about what to expect during the final stages.  For instance, about two to three sessions prior to the final stage, I will remind members that the group will end and the importance of making the most of the group time; as well as helping them comprehend the benefits of being involved in the group before it ends. According to Corey, Corey, and Corey (2018) termination can begin on the first day of the group so leaders should prepare members throughout their interactions for the ending of the group.  During the video Dr. Corey (Haynes, 2014) emphasize reminding members of the ending and always preparing the for termination.  With a group like Domestic Violence survivors it can be most helpful to let them know what can be expected in an attempt to ease tension of the unknown since they come from situations that can often times be unpredictable.
Resources after Group
Even though the group sessions have been terminated it is still important to offer group members resources that they can take with them when the weekly group experience is no longer available to them.  Two resources or supports I would offer group members after the sessions have ended include a follow-up session and the option of linking with a group member.  One objective of the follow-up session would be for the member to realize how he or she is utilizing the tools learned in group in their everyday life. Dr. Corey detailed the importance of follow-up groups and how they allow members to explore what they have achieved while in the group outside of the group (Haynes, 2014).  Like the follow-up sessions, linking with a former group member will give the member support as well as an accountability partner.  These resources can give members a reference when the group is no longer available for support and help members identify things that they have or wish to accomplished.
Evaluations
After the group experience has ended a tool that can be used to evaluate the group experience is a questionnaire.  According to Corey (et. al 2018) questionnaires encourage members to again reflect and one more time put into words the meaning of their experiences in the group.  Questionnaire also give the group leader a tool to measure how well the group benefitted the members and gives the leaders an opportunity to make constructive changes.  Another way to evaluate the group experience is to check in with the members during the final meeting to hear what different members have to report about their experiences of the group (Haynes, 2014).  This dialogue could help the members and leaders to gauge the mindsets of the members from the first session to the last sessions.  In other words, it will allow all involved to witness that the feelings and attitudes may have changed since the initial session.  Evaluations are helpful to the group experience since it can benefit both members and leaders.

Quantitative Project

Overview

In this assignment, you will articulate a business problem and identify variables and quantitative statistical techniques to investigate the issue. This assignment will represent the culmination of your quantitative work of the first half of the course.

  • If your applied business research project (ABRP) will require the use of quantitative inferential statistics, use your own ABRP for this assignment.
  • If your applied business research project (ABRP) will not require the use of quantitative inferential statistics, then use Quantitative Study Example Project (linked in Resources).

Instructions

Reminder: If your applied business research project (ABRP) will not require the use of quantitative inferential statistics, use the Quantitative Study Example Project in Resources to complete this assignment.

Complete the following:

  1. Business Problem: Formulate a current business problem using examples and descriptions drawn from scholarly literature or a specific business organization.
    • Using your own ABRP or the example project, identify the business problem.
    • State and briefly explain it.
    • Explain the problem’s relationship to the research question.
  2. Research Question: Refine the business problem into one or more research questions that require the use of inferential statistics and allow for an exploratory investigation.
    • From the business problem, explain a research question that will require use of inferential statistics.
    • With each question, address the relationships among variables and/or the difference among groups or conditions.
  3. Variables: Refine the research question into variables that are operational and measurable.
    • Identify the variables that are involved in that research question.
    • Explain the significance and magnitude of the statistical relationships or differences.
  4. Data Collection Instruments: Explain how to evaluate the ability of the instruments or other data collection methods to quantify the variables.
    • Identify the instruments or other data collection methods that will be used to gather the data needed to measure your variables.
    • Explain how these instruments and/or methods will be evaluated to assure their validity and reliability.
  5. Statistical Analysis Technique: Explain how a selected statistical analysis technique is appropriate for a specific research question and the data to be analyzed.
    • Review Table 1: Decision Matrix for Inferential Statistics Selection in Choosing a Statistical Technique (linked in Resources).
    • Using the four-box inferential statistical technique, determine which technique family your statistical analysis technique will come from (Box 1, 2, 3, or 4) using the Decision Matrix for Inferential Statistics Selection.
    • Assume for this assignment that the technique you will use corresponds to the box you chose in Table 2: Decision Matrix Sample Statistics Choice. For example, if applying the logic you learned in this unit, you conclude that the appropriate box is Box 1, assume that your appropriate statistical analysis technique is the Multiple Linear Regression choice.
    • List this choice and briefly explain the logic that led to its selection. If you chose Box 1 or Box 2, also provide a brief statement explaining what you will do if the data you collect do not meet the requirements for the use of parametric statistics.
  6. Minimum Sample Size: Identify the minimum sample size necessary and appropriate input parameters for the previously selected statistical technique and associated test family.
    • Review Table 2: Decision Matrix Sample Statistics Choice in Choosing a Statistical Technique (linked in Resources).
    • Use the G*Power tool downloaded in Unit 3 to estimate the minimum sample size that you will need.
    • Use the “A priori Compute Required Sample Size” setting.
    • Justify the input parameters.

Submission Requirements

  1. Create an APA-formatted report detailing the steps in the assignment in order using steps 1 through 6 above.
  2. Use (Level 1) section headings that match the labels on Steps 1 through 6. Use subsection headings (Level 2, and so on) if needed.
  3. Include a cover page with the appropriate information, including your name.
  4. Review the assignment scoring guide to ensure that you meet all criteria.

Research priorities on nursing leadership
This week’s Discussion asks you to choose a research priority from the list that is shared in your Resources for the week.  You are asked to find 2-3 articles that address the selected priority, and based on what you find in those articles and in your searches more generally, reflect on the state of research in the priority area you have chosen.
To do this, you will need to:

  • identify Nursing databases useful for this research
  • identify search terms that will produce useful search results in the Nursing databases
  • conduct a search that turns up useful results on a chosen research topic from the Resource listed
  • assess the current state of research on your selected priority, based on the existence (or non-existence) of results

The Walden University Library can help!  On this page you will find information on a Library Lab that offers live instruction on how to research this discussion post.  See the box below for details on dates and times that the Lab is offered live, as well as links to watch recordings of previous sessions.
You will also find guidance on how to choose useful databases, identify good search terms, and conduct an effective search.  Then, you can draw your conclusions about the state of research for the priority you have chosen, and respond to the discussion post.
